**EDI 210 (Motor Carrier Freight Details and Invoice)**: An EDI 210 is the X12 Motor Carrier Freight Details and Invoice: the transaction set that gives detail information for charges for services a motor carrier rendered. X12 says it is used both as a motor carrier invoice to request payment and as details of the charges for motor freight shipments.

## How it works

An EDI 210 is the X12 Motor Carrier Freight Details and Invoice, the transaction set that carries a motor carrier's charges for the services it rendered, either as an invoice requesting payment or as a statement of shipment charges.

X12's purpose statement for the 210 names two jobs:

- Invoice: a motor carrier invoice to request payment.
- Charge detail: details pertaining to the charges for one or more motor freight shipments.

In both uses the subject is the same: detail information for charges for services rendered by a motor carrier. The 210 belongs to X12's transportation family. X12's Supply Chain subcommittee (X12M) is responsible for supply chain transaction sets, except the transportation-specific ones, which X12's Transportation subcommittee (X12I) maintains.

## The 210 among carrier documents

The 210 is one of several X12 transaction sets that pass between shippers and carriers, each with its own job:

- 204 Motor Carrier Load Tender: a shipper offers (tenders) a shipment to a full load (truckload) motor carrier, with scheduling, equipment requirements, commodities and shipping instructions.
- 990 Response to a Load Tender: the response to a 204 used as a load tender.
- 211 Motor Carrier Bill of Lading: lets the party contracting with a motor carrier provide a legal bill of lading for a shipment.
- 214 Transportation Carrier Shipment Status Message: the carrier reports the status of the shipment in terms of dates, times, locations, route, identifying numbers and conveyance.
- 210 Motor Carrier Freight Details and Invoice: detail of charges for services a motor carrier rendered, used as an invoice to request payment or as details of the freight charges.

## EDI 210 vs EDI 810 and EDI 110

X12 publishes more than one invoice, and the 210 is the one for motor carriers:

- 810 Invoice: the general invoice, for customary and established business and industry practice relative to the billing for goods and services provided.
- 210 Motor Carrier Freight Details and Invoice: charges for services rendered by a motor carrier.
- 110 Air Freight Details and Invoice: provides a customer with an air invoice for transportation and other charges related to shipments, including original invoices, past due billings, balance due bills and revisions.

So a distributor selling goods to a buyer can bill the goods with an 810, while the motor carrier that hauled them bills its own charges with a 210.

## Example

A carrier hauls 3 truckloads for a distributor in one week at $1,200 a load and sends a 210 for each load. The distributor's freight cost for the week is 3 x $1,200 = $3,600.

The Shopify orders behind those deliveries charged buyers $3,150 for shipping in total. The difference is $3,600 minus $3,150 = $450 of freight the distributor carried itself that week.

## On Shopify

On Shopify, what a buyer paid for shipping sits on the order's shipping lines. Shopify describes a shipping line as the shipping method that customers select for an order, including pricing details, carrier information, and any applied discounts or taxes.

- Original price: the shipping price without any discounts applied.
- Discounted price: the shipping price after applying discounts.
- Carrier reference: a reference to the carrier service that provided the rate, present when the rate was computed by a third-party carrier service.
- Taxes: the tax lines connected to the shipping line.

A 210 records what the motor carrier charges for the services it rendered. Setting the 210 totals next to the shipping lines on the matching orders shows the gap between what the carrier billed and what buyers paid for shipping, as in the example above.
