# What Is Pick and Pack?

> Pick and pack is the warehouse work of pulling the items on a customer's order from their storage locations, called picking, and putting them into shipping cartons with a packing list, called packing, so the order is ready to ship. It is the in-warehouse part of order fulfillment, between releasing the order and handing the package to a carrier.

**Pick and pack**: Pick and pack is the warehouse work of pulling the items on a customer's order from their storage locations, called picking, and putting them into shipping cartons with a packing list, called packing, so the order is ready to ship. It is the in-warehouse part of order fulfillment, between releasing the order and handing the package to a carrier.

## How it works

Pick and pack starts when an order is released to the warehouse: a picker collects the ordered quantities from their storage locations, then a packer checks the items, puts them into a carton and adds the paperwork that travels with the shipment.

Oracle NetSuite's warehouse management system (NetSuite WMS) documents the sequence for its own product:

**Pick, pack and ship in NetSuite WMS**

### 1. Commit, Commit the order

When you submit or approve an order, NetSuite fully or partially commits items to it.

### 2. Release, Release to the warehouse

Committed items are included in wave transactions and released to the warehouse.

### 3. Pick, Pick the items

Pickers process released orders on a mobile app; fully picked quantities create item fulfillments.

### 4. Pack, Pack the carton

You enter carton details, select the items in the carton, and the order moves to Packed status.

### 5. Ship, Ship the order

The packing list shows item, carton and shipping details for the shipment.

In NetSuite WMS, orders must have fulfillment records in Picked status before they can be packed, and the packing list can be printed right after each manually packed order.

## Picking methods

How the picker walks the warehouse is set by the picking method:

- By order: one pick list per order, so each order is picked on its own.
- By product: one combined list of products across the selected orders, picked together and then split into each order's carton.
- Within a wave: NetSuite WMS offers single order picking, which creates a pick task for each line of an order, and multiple order or bulk picking, which creates one pick task for similar items across all orders in the wave.

## Example

Three orders arrive: order A needs 2 widgets and 1 gasket, order B needs 4 widgets, and order C needs 1 gasket and 3 valves.

- By order: 3 pick lists with 2 + 1 + 2 = 5 pick lines.
- By product: 1 pick list with 3 lines: widgets 2 + 4 = 6, gaskets 1 + 1 = 2, valves 3.
- Packing: either way, the packer splits the 11 items into 3 cartons: 3 items for A, 4 for B and 4 for C.

## On Shopify

- Default: you fulfill orders yourself and mark them as fulfilled manually. You can also use a fulfillment service, dropship, or combine methods, even for different items in the same order.
- Pick lists: as of October 28, 2026, with Shopify's Order Printer app you choose a picking strategy, by orders or by products, and print pick lists for up to 50 orders at a time.
- Packing slips: a packing slip lists the items in a package with addresses, SKU numbers and quantities. Shopify says packing slips help warehouse staff pick and pack orders accurately.

## How Uncap helps

Uncap's [Fishbowl to Shopify integration](/integration/fishbowl) page describes the hand-off: Shopify orders flow into Fishbowl as sales orders, ready for picking, packing, and shipping through Fishbowl's warehouse workflow. Uncap Connect approaches inventory and warehouse system connections as part of a broader architecture, so multi-warehouse allocation, wholesale pricing, and draft orders sync correctly.

## Frequently asked questions
