# Sell Carpet by the Cut and Carpet Tile by the Carton, From One Dye Lot

> Uncap builds carpet and carpet tile ecommerce on Shopify for flooring distributors and mills that sell broadloom by the cut and modular tile by the carton to retailers, flooring contractors and commercial projects. The roll width decides the cut, so the order is a cut list, not a floor area. Every job ships from one dye lot. Roll width selection, the trim allowance, the pile direction rule for fill pieces and your cut charge are built during implementation. Lot-level availability, so the storefront only promises a quantity a single lot can fill and the order records which lot it ships from, is built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect.

## The challenge

**What makes carpet and carpet tile a different trade**

The roll width decides the cut, every job ships from one dye lot, and a commercial order is shared by two parties.

| | Factor | Generic storefront setup | What carpet and carpet tile need |

| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| Roll width | Ordering by floor area misses that the same floor cut from two widths is two different orders. | The buyer enters lengths at a width, area by area, with roll width selection built during implementation. |
| Cut charge | Without your cut charge on the order line, the storefront gives the cut away. | Cuts under full roll length carry your cut charge, set by rule during implementation. |
| Dye lot | A stock figure for the whole style hides that a job has to ship from a single lot. | Lot-level availability, built during implementation, only promises a quantity one lot can fill and records the lot it ships from. |
| Remnants | A remnant exists once, so it cannot share a stock count with the roll it came from. | Each remnant becomes a single-unit listing with its width, length, lot and price, created from the ERP record during implementation. |
| Commercial projects | The designer specifies, the contractor buys, and the designer usually should not see the price. | A project record, built during implementation, ties the designer's specified style, color and lot reservation to the contractor's account. |

**The roll width decides the order, not the floor area.** The Carpet and Rug Institute's commercial installation standard defines broadloom as "carpet manufactured in a roll format." Mills price it by the square yard, and width has a price. On [one mill's New York State contract price list](https://online.ogs.ny.gov/purchase/spg/pdfdocs/2060023063pl_mohawk.pdf), changing broadloom width to 13 feet 6 inches or 15 feet carries an upcharge over the standard 12 feet. Cut a 14 foot room from 12 foot goods and you need a seam and a fill piece. Cut it from 15 foot goods and there is no seam, but a strip of offcut runs the length of the room. Same floor, two different orders.

**The order is a cut list, and the seam diagram writes it.** [CRI 104, the standard for installation of commercial carpet](https://carpet-rug.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/CRI-104-STANDARD-For-INSTALLATION-of-COMMERCIAL-CARPET.pdf), requires a scale drawing to determine "carpet quantities, quantity per dye lot" and seam locations. The shop drawing carries the seam layout, the pile direction for each area and roll length requirements, with at least 3 inches allowed beyond each measurement. Where two pieces of the same broadloom sit side by side, the pile direction has to match unless the spec says otherwise. So a fill piece cannot be turned sideways to save yardage.

**A cut costs something a full roll does not.** A mill price list on one state contract carries a separate per-yard fee for cuts under roll length. Your own cut charge and the time on the cutting table belong on the order line, or the storefront gives the cut away. What is left behind is a roll end or remnant: one piece with its own width, length and dye lot, sold once and then gone.

**Every job ships from one dye lot.** Carpet is dyed in batches, and each batch is its own dye lot. The federal guide specification for carpeting, [UFGS 09 68 00](https://www.wbdg.org/FFC/DOD/UFGS/UFGS%2009%2068%2000.pdf), wants deliveries labeled with the "dye lot number." It also asks for extra material "from same dye lot," suggesting three percent of total square yards. Carpet tile works the same way: manufacturers print the dye lot on each carton label and advise against mixing lots in one area. So the useful stock figure is not how many yards of a style you hold. It is how many you hold in a single lot.

**Carpet tile rounds by the carton, broadloom by the foot.** Tile is quoted by the square yard on mill price lists but ships in full cartons, so the quantity rounds up to whole cartons. Broadloom rounds to whole feet of a chosen width, plus the trim allowance. A commercial project often carries both: tile in the open office, broadloom in the boardroom, one designer, one contractor, one order with two rounding rules.

**On a commercial job, two parties share one order.** The architect or interior designer writes the finish schedule: style, color, pattern and installation method for each space. The flooring contractor buys against it. The designer needs the specified style held, in one lot, with its certification on file. That same federal spec asks for indoor air quality certification under UL 2818 Gold, SCS Indoor Advantage Gold or CRI Green Label Plus, with current documentation from the certification body. The contractor needs a price, and the designer usually should not see it. Residential is a separate channel again: retailers buying cuts for homes, under CRI 105 and their own price list.

## The Uncap solution

**From a cut list to an order from one dye lot**

The buyer enters lengths at a width the way the seam diagram lists them, and pricing runs through Uncap Quotes.

### 1. Cut list, The buyer enters lengths at a width

Area by area, the way the seam diagram already lists them.
- Roll width selection and the trim allowance, built during implementation
- The pile direction rule for fill pieces and your cut charge, built during implementation
- Carpet tile held to whole cartons by Shopify B2B increment rules

### 2. Lot check, Only a quantity one lot can fill is offered

A 400 yard broadloom job is only offered from a lot holding 400 yards plus trim.
- Built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect
- The order records which lot it ships from
- Attic stock from the same lot can sit on the same order

### 3. Quote, A quote the contractor can accept

Uncap Quotes applies negotiated account prices, tiers and volume breaks automatically, with pricing and terms pulled from the ERP.
- Approval routing for exceptions
- Validity windows and a full revision history
- Converts to a Shopify order in one click when the contractor accepts

**Cuts priced from the cut list, through Uncap Quotes.** The buyer enters lengths at a width, area by area, the way the seam diagram already lists them. Roll width selection, the trim allowance, the pile direction rule for fill pieces and your cut charge are built during implementation. Pricing runs through [Uncap Quotes](https://www.uncap.com/products/quotes), which runs the configure, price, quote (CPQ) workflow inside the Shopify admin. Negotiated account prices, tiers and volume breaks are applied automatically, and pricing and terms pull from the ERP.

**The dye lot treated as a stock condition.** The ERP tracks stock by lot. Lot-level availability, so the storefront only promises a quantity a single lot can fill and the order records which lot it ships from, is built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect. A 400 yard broadloom job is only offered from a lot holding 400 yards plus trim, and tile cartons come from one lot. Attic stock from the same lot can sit on the same order.

**Inventory that matches the warehouse.** [Uncap Connect](https://www.uncap.com/products/connect) keeps Shopify and your ERP in real-time, two-way sync on inventory, orders, customers and pricing. It is embedded inside Shopify, so there is no separate middleware platform to maintain, and the ERP stays the system of record. FCB2B is the World Floor Covering Association's EDI program for orders, price catalogs and ship notices. If your mills send FCB2B documents, mapping them into your ERP is scoped in the Blueprint and built during implementation.

**Remnants listed once and sold once.** Each remnant or roll end becomes a single-unit listing carrying its width, length, lot and price, created from the ERP record during implementation. When it sells in the ERP, the listing goes with it.

**Cartons for tile, feet for broadloom.** On the tile side, Shopify's own [B2B quantity rules](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/b2b/catalogs/quantity-pricing) include increments: "if your products are boxed in multiples of 10, then you can set your increment rule to 10." That holds a tile order to whole cartons natively. The square yard to carton conversion in front of it is the calculation layer the building materials hub already covers. Carrying both rounding rules on one project order is configured during implementation.

**Specifier and contractor, one project.** In [Uncap Portal](https://www.uncap.com/products/portal), company accounts are real multi-user accounts with roles and permissions, and each buyer sees their own assortment and pricing. A project record that ties the designer's specified style, color and lot reservation to the contractor's account is built during implementation. Certifications such as CRI Green Label Plus become filterable product attributes, configured during implementation. Bids go through Uncap Quotes, with approval routing for exceptions, validity windows and a full revision history. When the contractor accepts, the approved version converts to a Shopify order in one click.

**On the question of whether Shopify can carry roll goods logic.** No commerce platform ships broadloom cutting, remnant handling or dye lot enforcement. On every platform those rules are built, and the dye lot rule depends on lot data that lives in the ERP. The real risk on any B2B build is an integration written for retail that does not map companies, catalogs and contract prices. Uncap Connect syncs customer-specific pricing, credit terms and tax rules, so the contractor's price and the lot check work from the same ERP data.

**Residential and commercial from one warehouse.** Retailers, contractors and design firms each get their own catalog and pricing in Uncap Portal, with net terms, invoices and payments in the portal.

## Ready to talk

Bring two documents: the seam diagram and cut list from a recent commercial job, and the remnant report from one warehouse. Between them they hold the width rules, the lot problem and the one-off inventory this build has to get right.

Book a strategy session with Uncap, or start with a Blueprint if what you need first is the cut, lot and remnant logic written down and costed.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Shopify handle broadloom cuts, remnants and dye lot rules, or do we need a heavier platform?

Yes. No commerce platform ships roll cutting, remnant handling or dye lot enforcement, so those rules are built from your data on any platform, Shopify included. The dye lot rule needs lot-level stock from the ERP, so it is built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect, which runs inside Shopify rather than as separate middleware. Pricing runs through Uncap Quotes with negotiated account prices applied automatically. The remaining risk is an integration that does not map B2B companies and catalogs, which is why Connect syncs customer-specific pricing, credit terms and tax rules.

### Why does a carpet order have to come from one dye lot?

Because carpet is dyed in batches, and manufacturers advise against mixing dye lots in one area. The commercial installation standard, CRI 104, plans "quantity per dye lot" and marks "where dye lot changes occur." Tile cartons carry the lot on the label for the same reason. For a distributor, that makes the lot, not the style, the real unit of available stock.

### What is the difference between broadloom and carpet tile when you sell them online?

Broadloom is sold as cuts from a roll at a fixed width, so the order is a list of lengths priced by the square yard. Seams, pile direction, trim and a cut charge all shape it. Carpet tile is precut during manufacturing and ships in cartons, so the order rounds to whole cartons. Both carry a dye lot. A storefront for both needs two rounding rules and one lot rule.

### How are carpet remnants and roll ends sold online?

As single-unit listings, each carrying its own width, length, dye lot and price. A remnant exists once, so it cannot share a stock count with the roll it came from. On an Uncap build, each remnant is created from the ERP record during implementation, and real-time inventory sync through Uncap Connect keeps the storefront current once it sells.

### How does a commercial carpet order work when a designer specifies and a contractor buys?

The designer's specification and the contractor's purchase sit on one project record, built during implementation, inside the multi-user company accounts of Uncap Portal. The designer sees the specified style, color, lot reservation and certifications. The contractor sees their own price and terms. Bids run as quotes with approval routing, validity windows and a full revision history, and the approved version converts to a Shopify order in one click.

### Which ERPs does this connect to?

Uncap publishes twelve ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage and SAP. Integrations are delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app or a managed iPaaS integration. For your ERP, your lot tracking and the depth of sync you need, the Uncap team confirms fit directly.

### What is the difference between this page and the building materials page?

The building materials page covers any dimensional product: measure, calculate, order, the waste factor, contractor pricing and submittals. This page covers what is specific to carpet: the roll width shapes the cut, cuts carry a charge, remnants are one-off stock, every job ships from one dye lot, and tile and broadloom round differently on the same order.

### How does a carpet and carpet tile build start?

With a Blueprint, a scoping engagement delivered before any build begins. It maps your widths, cut charges, lot tracking, remnant process, account pricing and ERP, and you keep the architecture, prototype, data plan, risk register and fixed-cost estimate.
