# Turn a Soil Test Into a Fertilizer Blend Priced by the Nutrient

> Uncap builds fertilizer and soil amendment B2B ecommerce on Shopify for ag retailers, blenders and turf and garden distributors selling to growers, applicators, golf courses and dealers. Here an order often starts as a soil test recommendation in pounds of nitrogen, phosphate and potash per acre, which your agronomist turns into a blend. Extension guidance compares fertilizer prices per pound of nutrient, not per ton. The same product can ship by the ton, tote or bag. Uncap's published products do not include a soil-test-to-blend calculator, per-nutrient pricing or a booked-ton ledger; on Shopify, that engine is built during implementation from your data.

## The challenge

**Where a generic storefront breaks for fertilizer and soil amendments**

A grower often hands you a soil test recommendation in pounds of nutrient per acre, not a SKU.

| | Factor | Generic storefront setup | What fertilizer sellers need |

| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| Soil test orders | The website sells a 50 pound bag while the blend lives in an agronomist's spreadsheet. | A blend calculator, built during implementation from your raw materials, turns pounds of N, P2O5 and K2O per acre into a blend ticket. |
| Nutrient pricing | A ton price alone hides the per-pound-of-nutrient comparison. | Price per pound of N, P2O5 and K2O shown beside the ton price, built during implementation. |
| Ton, tote and bag | One way to buy, though the same potash can leave by the ton, in a tote or as bags on a pallet. | Ton, tote and bag forms, each with its own price and minimum, configured during implementation against the units your ERP already keeps. |
| Label data | Grade and guaranteed analysis retyped by a merchandiser as product page copy. | Grade and guaranteed analysis on each product page come from the registered label data, built during implementation. |
| Tons by grade | The order record does not carry grade and net tons, so someone rebuilds them from scale tickets. | Every order line carries grade, form and net tons by state, for a tons-by-grade report, built during implementation. |

**The order arrives as pounds of nutrient per acre.** A grower often hands you a soil test recommendation, not a SKU. The University of Arkansas works one example of "[100 lb N, 80 lb P2O5 and 120 lb K2O](https://www.uaex.uada.edu/publications/pdf/FSA2223.pdf)" and gives the method for granular products: "divide the recommended weight of nutrients by the whole number percent of the nutrient in the product and multiply by 100." In its example, 174 pounds of DAP supplies the phosphate and also brings 31 pounds of nitrogen, so "The remaining 69 lb N will be needed from another fertilizer source." That is a blend worked backward from a target. Often it lives in an agronomist's spreadsheet, while the website sells a 50 pound bag.

**Compare per pound of nutrient, not per ton.** The University of Arkansas puts it plainly: "[While fertilizer prices are usually in dollars per ton, the price can be converted to a per-pound of nutrient](https://www.uaex.uada.edu/publications/pdf/FSA2224.pdf) using the nutrient concentration of the fertilizer." In its worked example, urea at $500 a ton and UAN 32 at $350 a ton come out at $0.54 and $0.55 per pound of nitrogen. A ton price alone hides that comparison.

**One product, three ways to buy it.** The same potash can leave on a tender truck by the ton, go out in a tote, or ship as bags on a pallet. Each form can carry its own price, minimum, delivery and paperwork. A row crop account may want tons delivered to a field. A golf course superintendent may want twenty bags of a greens grade on Tuesday.

**A custom blend carries its own guaranteed analysis.** AAPFCO, the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials, publishes the model Uniform State Fertilizer Bill. Its [Product Label Guide](https://www.aapfco.org/pdf/product_label_guide.pdf) states that a fertilizer mixed to a customer's specifications "(custom blend) shall be labeled to show the net weight, the guaranteed analysis, and the name and address of the distributor or registrant/licensee." For bulk, the guide states the information "must accompany the delivery as a written or printed form and shall be supplied to the purchaser at the time of delivery." Under the model bill, each custom blend is labeled and each bulk load carries its own written statement. The guide adds that "the laws of each state are the final standard for labeling, licensing, and registration requirements."

**Your product page may count as labeling.** The same guide defines labeling to include "electronic communication used in promoting the sale of such fertilizer." So the grade and guaranteed analysis on a product page belong to the same record as the label, not to merchandising copy.

**In Iowa, licensees report tons by grade.** [Iowa Code chapter 200](https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/code/200.pdf) has the secretary fix an inspection fee each year "at not more than twenty cents per ton" and requires licensees to file "a semiannual statement setting forth the number of net tons of commercial fertilizer or beneficial substance distributed in this state by grade during the preceding six-month period." Soil amendments sit in the same chapter, among the beneficial substances it lists. A blend plant can turn out many grades in a season. If the order record does not carry grade and net tons, someone rebuilds them from scale tickets.

## The Uncap solution

**The ERP holds pricing, units and balances, the storefront reads them**

Uncap Connect keeps Shopify and your ERP in real-time, two-way sync, and the blend, per-nutrient pricing and booking logic is built during implementation from your data.

Hub: One Shopify store (Pricing, units, prepaid balances and terms stay in the ERP and reach the storefront intact)

### From the ERP

- **Customer-specific pricing**, Synced with terms and tax the way B2B works
- **Units**, The units your ERP already keeps, for ton, tote and bag forms
- **Booked tons and prepaid balances**, Kept in the ERP and synced to Shopify, built during implementation
- **Inventory, orders and customers**, Kept in real-time, two-way sync between Shopify and the ERP

### On the storefront

- **Blend ticket**, Grade, pounds of each material per acre, total tons and the blending charge
- **Price per nutrient**, Price per pound of N, P2O5 and K2O beside the ton price
- **Ton, tote and bag**, Each sellable form with its own price and minimum
- **Label statements**, Custom blend and bulk delivery statements generated from the order and attached to it
- **Call-off loads**, Each load draws down the booked tons and the prepaid balance

### Connectors

- **Uncap Connect**, Embedded inside Shopify with no separate middleware, and the ERP stays the system of record
- **Uncap Quotes**, Configure, price, quote inside the Shopify admin, with validity windows and a full revision history
- **Uncap Portal**, Each buyer sees their assortment and pricing, with NET terms, invoices and payments

**Soil test in, blend out, built on your materials.** The blend calculator is built during implementation from your raw material list and the grade of each material in your plant. The buyer or agronomist enters pounds of N, P2O5 and K2O per acre and the acres. It follows the extension method: start with the multi-nutrient material that supplies a nutrient the others do not, credit what it brings, fill the rest. Out comes a blend ticket with the grade, pounds of each material per acre, total tons and the blending charge, under mixing rules you set during scoping.

**Priced per pound of nutrient, quoted through Uncap Quotes.** [Uncap Quotes](https://www.uncap.com/products/quotes) runs the configure, price, quote workflow inside the Shopify admin, with negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks applied automatically, and pricing and terms pulled from the systems you already trust. Showing price per pound of N, P2O5 and K2O beside the ton price is built during implementation. Because fertilizer prices move, each quote carries a validity window and a full revision history. Exceptions go to the right approver, and the approved quote turns straight into a Shopify order.

**Bulk, tote and bag on one account.** Ton, tote and bag forms, each with its own price and minimum, are configured during implementation against the units your ERP already keeps. In [Uncap Portal](https://www.uncap.com/products/portal), each buyer sees their assortment and pricing. The row crop account sees bulk blends. The turf distributor sees bagged grades, with reorder lists and order history a click away. Portal also lets a Shopify store sell services and rentals alongside standard ecommerce products, through one checkout, so custom blending, delivery and spreader rental ride on the same order.

**The label statement travels with the order.** Grade and guaranteed analysis on each product page come from the registered label data. A custom blend statement, with net weight, guaranteed analysis and your name and address, is generated from the blend ticket. Each bulk load gets a written statement with the label information; Iowa's chapter 200 also requires a bulk shipment to be "accompanied by a written or printed statement giving the purchaser's name and address." Every order line also carries grade, form and net tons by state, for a tons-by-grade report. All of this is built during implementation. These are records your team checks against your state's rules and files; the platform does not make anyone compliant.

**Prepay and call-off, drawn down by the load.** The agriculture hub covers pre-season programs in general; this is the fertilizer mechanic underneath. Say a grower books 40 tons of a 10-20-20 blend in December at a locked price and prepays. In April the ground dries and they call off 12 tons for the north farm. That load draws down the booked tons and the prepaid balance, leaving 28 tons at the booked price. The booking ledger and call-off flow are built during implementation, with balances kept in the ERP. Portal shows NET terms, invoices and payments, and budgets, approvals and limits per user decide who can call off a load.

**On the question of whether Shopify can carry this.** Uncap's published products do not include a soil-test-to-blend calculator, per-nutrient pricing or a booked-ton ledger; on Shopify, that engine is built during implementation from your data. The useful question is where pricing, units, prepaid balances and terms live, and how directly the storefront reads them. [Uncap Connect](https://www.uncap.com/products/connect) is embedded inside Shopify, with no separate middleware to babysit. It keeps Shopify and your ERP in real-time, two-way sync of inventory, orders, customers and pricing, handling customer-specific pricing, terms and tax the way B2B works. Carrying booked tons, units and prepaid balances through that sync is built during implementation. The ERP stays the system of record.

**Proof, labeled at its true distance.** Uncap has not published a fertilizer case study. The closest is adjacent: [Farmers Depot](https://www.uncap.com/work/farmers-depot), which Uncap lists under agriculture, runs Shopify Plus B2B with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations as the system of record, serving 14,528 customers across 13,046 companies. Its sync runs through APPSeCONNECT, a third-party middleware route, not Uncap Connect. What transfers is account structure at scale, not a blend engine.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Shopify run soil test blends, prepay booking and call-off deliveries, or does a fertilizer retailer need an ERP-first platform?

Yes, Shopify can run it. On Shopify, the blend engine and booking ledger are built during implementation from your data; Uncap's published products do not include them as standard. What matters is that pricing, units, prepaid balances and terms stay in the ERP and reach the storefront intact. Uncap Connect is embedded inside Shopify and keeps it in real-time, two-way sync with the ERP, including customer-specific pricing, terms and tax; carrying booked tons and prepaid balances through that sync is built during implementation. Blend quotes run through Uncap Quotes inside the Shopify admin.

### How do you turn a soil test recommendation into a fertilizer blend?

For a granular material, you divide each nutrient target by that nutrient's percentage in the material and multiply by 100, starting with any multi-nutrient material that supplies a nutrient the others do not. For a fluid, University of Arkansas Extension divides the target by the pounds of nutrient per gallon instead. It works this through for 100 pounds of N, 80 of P2O5 and 120 of K2O per acre: 174 pounds of DAP covers the phosphate and adds 31 pounds of nitrogen, credited before the rest is filled. A storefront blend calculator, built during implementation, repeats that arithmetic from your own materials, then totals the tons.

### Why price fertilizer per pound of nutrient instead of per ton?

Because comparing on the nutrient delivered shows which product is the economical source. University of Arkansas Extension divides the ton price by the pounds of nutrient in a ton: a ton of urea at 46 percent N holds 920 pounds of N. In its example, urea at $500 a ton and UAN 32 at $350 a ton cost $0.54 and $0.55 per pound of N. Showing both prices, built during implementation, puts that comparison on the product page.

### What has to be on a custom blend fertilizer label?

AAPFCO's Product Label Guide states that a custom blend "shall be labeled to show the net weight, the guaranteed analysis, and the name and address of the distributor or registrant/licensee." Iowa's law states such a blend "shall not be required to be registered, but shall be labeled" and that "the resulting analysis would meet the guarantee" is the distributor's responsibility. A storefront can generate that statement from the blend ticket and attach it to the order. Your state's law is the final word.

### Does a fertilizer product page count as labeling?

It can. AAPFCO's guide defines labeling to include "electronic communication used in promoting the sale of such fertilizer," and Iowa's chapter 200 defines it the same way. So grade, guaranteed analysis and claims on the page should come from the registered label data, not be retyped by a merchandiser, which keeps the page and the label from drifting apart.

### How do prepay booking and call-off deliveries work online?

The grower books tons at a set price and prepays, then calls off loads through the season, and each delivery draws down what is left. The booking ledger and call-off flow are built during implementation, with booked tons and prepaid balances kept in the ERP and synced to Shopify. In Uncap Portal the buyer sees NET terms, invoices and payments, and budgets, approvals and limits per user control who can call off a load.

### Which ERPs does this connect to?

Uncap publishes twelve ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage and SAP, including pages for Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations and Epicor Eagle. They are delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app or a managed iPaaS integration. Agriculture-specific systems such as Agvance and Agris are not among the published integrations. For your system and its booking data, the Uncap team confirms fit during scoping.

### What is the difference between this page and the agriculture and farming page?

The agriculture page covers how farm input businesses sell online: seasonality, negotiated grower pricing, credit settled months later, applicator gating and pre-season programs. This page covers what is particular to fertilizer and soil amendments: the blend worked back from a soil test, price per pound of nutrient, ton, tote and bag, the label statement with each load, and booked tons drawn down by call-off. If you sell fertilizer alongside other inputs, you need both.
