# Sell Tinted Paint by Base and Formula, Checked Against the Ship-To

> Uncap builds paint and coatings B2B ecommerce on Shopify for manufacturers, distributors and dealer networks selling architectural and industrial coatings to painting contractors, property managers and dealers. The gallon a contractor orders is not a SKU. It is a base, a sheen and a container size from your warehouse, plus a colorant formula dispensed at the counter. Where your ERP tracks base stock by batch, batch-level availability, so the storefront only promises a quantity a single batch can fill and the order records which batch it ships from, is built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect. A rule table keyed to the ship-to address is built during implementation.

## The challenge

**Where a generic storefront breaks for paint and coatings**

The gallon a contractor orders is not a SKU, and whether it may ship depends on where it lands.

| | Factor | Generic storefront setup | What paint and coatings need |

| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| Base and formula | Colors become new SKUs, though the gallon is a base from your warehouse plus a colorant formula dispensed at the counter. | Each product is a base in a sheen and a size, and a color step built during implementation writes the formula onto the order line. |
| Saved formulas | When the formula history lives only in one store's dispenser, or on a lid in the van, the reorder starts with a phone call. | Formulas stored under the company and each named job, with the date and store of the last mix, built during implementation. |
| Matching gallons | One order line for ten gallons leaves open whether they come from one base batch, and whether the order says so. | Where your ERP tracks base stock by batch, only a quantity a single batch can fill is promised, built during implementation, or the order carries a boxing instruction. |
| Ship-to address | Whether a gallon may ship depends on where it lands, and the state field alone is not the key. | A rule table keyed to the ship-to address, built during implementation, hides or blocks restricted products from your compliance team's list. |
| Two-part systems | Some protective coatings are sold as a Part A and a Part B. | Kit pairing, built during implementation, so a Part A never ships without its Part B. |

**The SKU is the base. The color is a formula.** EPA's national architectural coatings rule defines a [tint base](https://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-40/chapter-I/subchapter-C/part-59/subpart-D) as "a coating to which colorant is added in a paint store or at the site of application to produce a desired color." Your warehouse stocks the base. Sherwin-Williams lists one industrial urethane for contractors in Extra White, Deep Base and Ultradeep Base, each in 1 gallon and 5 gallon sizes. The door red the contractor asks for is not on that list. It is a formula: which colorants, and how much of each, dispensed into a base. Some data sheets cap the colorant a base will take. One Zinsser data sheet says "Maximum amount of tint should not exceed 2 ounces of universal colorant per gallon." So the formula and the base it goes into are chosen together.

**The formula belongs to an account and a job.** Say a painting contractor turns units at an apartment community every month, against the property manager's four standard colors. The formula that matters is the one mixed last time, including any adjustment after a field match. When that history lives only in one store's dispenser, or on a lid in the van, the reorder starts with a phone call. Some dealers differ again: they buy untinted base and tint on their own machines.

**Ten gallons of one color have to look like one color.** EPA's rule requires a date on the container of each architectural coating it covers: "The date the coating was manufactured, or a date code representing the date shall be indicated on the label, lid, or bottom of the container." Still, a Rust-Oleum data sheet for a Zinsser coating says "Multiple containers of tinted paint should be boxed (intermixed) to ensure color uniformity." So one order line becomes a question. Can these ten gallons come from one base batch, and if not, does the order say so?

**Whether a gallon may ship depends on where it lands.** EPA's rule sets national limits. It says it must not be read to stop "any State or political subdivision thereof" from "Adopting and enforcing any emissions standard or limitation applicable to a manufacturer or importer of architectural coatings." The [California Air Resources Board](https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/our-work/programs/coatings/architectural-coatings) says its Suggested Control Measure "serves as a model rule that can be adopted by districts throughout California." It reports that "22 of the 35 air districts have architectural coating rules," and that "adjacent districts may have different rules." In the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, the [Ozone Transport Commission](https://otcair.org/upload/Documents/Model%20Rules/OTC_Preamble_AIMModelRule_2001.pdf) wrote "a model rule that the States could use as a template in the process of adopting their own regulations." So the key for a product decision is the ship-to address, not the state field alone.

**At the counter, the colorant is regulated too.** CARB calls South Coast AQMD [Rule 1113](https://www.aqmd.gov/docs/default-source/rule-book/reg-xi/r1113.pdf) "more stringent than the 2019 SCM." The rule applies to "any person who supplies, sells, markets, offers for sale, or manufactures any architectural coating that is intended to be field applied within the District." It measures a coating's VOC "excluding any colorant added to tint bases." Then it regulates the colorant on its own: "No person within the District shall, at the point of sale of any architectural coating subject to paragraph (c)(1), add to such coating any colorant that contains VOC in excess of the corresponding applicable VOC limit specified in the Table of Standards 2." The tinted gallon is assembled at your counter. Which colorant system filled it belongs on the order record.

**Architectural and industrial coatings travel different paths.** EPA defines an architectural coating as one "recommended for field application to stationary structures and their appurtenances," excluding coatings recommended "solely for shop applications." Industrial maintenance coatings sit inside that definition as "a high performance architectural coating," and Rule 1113 gives them separate colorant limits. Some protective coatings are sold as a Part A and a Part B. OSHA's hazard communication standard requires a safety data sheet "for each hazardous chemical," and has distributors provide it "with their initial shipment and with the first shipment after a safety data sheet is updated."

## The Uncap solution

**Base from the ERP, formula on the order line**

Uncap Connect keeps inventory, orders, customers and pricing in real-time, two-way sync with the ERP, and the color step, formula library, batch logic and ship-to rules are built during implementation.

Hub: One Shopify store (Sells the base in a sheen and a size, with the formula on the order line)

### From the ERP

- **Base catalog**, A base, a sheen and a container size from your warehouse
- **Stock by batch**, Where your ERP tracks base stock by batch
- **Account pricing and terms**, Customer-specific pricing, credit terms and tax rules synced by Uncap Connect
- **Inventory and orders**, Kept in real-time, two-way sync, with the ERP as the system of record

### On the storefront

- **Color step**, Resolves a named color or saved formula to the right base, built during implementation
- **Formula library**, Stored under the company and each named job, built during implementation
- **Single-batch quantity**, Only a quantity a single batch can fill is promised, built during implementation
- **Ship-to product rules**, Restricted products hidden or blocked for that address, built during implementation
- **Tinting as a priced line**, Tinting or a field match sold next to the gallons through Uncap Portal

### Connectors

- **Uncap Connect**, Embedded inside Shopify rather than running as separate middleware, and the ERP stays the system of record
- **Uncap Quotes**, Repaint bids and industrial maintenance specs with negotiated prices, approvals and one-click conversion to Shopify orders
- **Uncap Portal**, Multi-user accounts with roles and permissions, where each buyer sees their own assortment and pricing

**Base from the ERP, formula on the order line.** Each product is a base in a sheen and a size. [Uncap Connect](https://www.uncap.com/products/connect) keeps inventory, orders, customers and pricing in real-time, two-way sync with the ERP. In this build a color is not a new SKU. A color step is built during implementation. It resolves a named color or saved formula to the right base, writes the formula onto the order line and checks the base's colorant capacity. Tinting is billable work. [Uncap Portal](https://www.uncap.com/products/portal) lets a Shopify store "sell services and rentals alongside standard ecommerce products," so tinting or a field match is a priced line next to the gallons.

**A formula library per account and per job.** In Uncap Portal, contractors and property managers get real multi-user accounts with roles and permissions. Each buyer sees their own assortment and pricing, with reorder lists a click away. Storing formulas under the company and each named job, with the date and store of the last mix, is built during implementation. The crew lead reorders "Building C corridors, eggshell" without reading a formula over the phone.

**Gallons from one base batch.** Where your ERP tracks base stock by batch, batch-level availability, so the storefront only promises a quantity a single batch can fill and the order records which batch it ships from, is built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect. When no single batch can fill the line, the order carries a boxing instruction or goes to a quote, by a rule you set in scoping.

**Products shown by ship-to, from rules your compliance team owns.** The storefront does not decide what may be sold anywhere. Your compliance team keeps the list of which products may ship to which states and air districts. A rule table keyed to the ship-to address is built during implementation. It hides or blocks restricted products for that address and records on the order which rule version applied. Job sites in two districts mean two assortments under one account. Each product's safety data sheet sits on its product page, and the order records which version shipped, also built during implementation.

**Bids and protective systems through Uncap Quotes.** A portfolio repaint bid or an industrial maintenance spec runs through [Uncap Quotes](https://www.uncap.com/products/quotes), which handles configure, price, quote inside the Shopify admin. Negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks apply automatically. Exceptions go to the right approver, quotes carry validity windows and a full revision history, and approved quotes turn straight into Shopify orders. Kit pairing, so a Part A never ships without its Part B, is built during implementation.

**On whether Shopify can carry paint logic.** Uncap's published products do not include a tint formula library, batch matching for tinted gallons or a VOC rule table for paint. On Shopify, those rules are built during implementation from your data, so the questions are where they run and whether account data reaches them intact. Shopify's own help center warns that some App Store integrations aren't fully compatible with B2B companies and catalogs, so company, pricing and customer data might not map correctly through them. Uncap Connect is embedded inside Shopify rather than running as separate middleware. It syncs "customer-specific pricing, credit terms, and tax rules," and the ERP stays the system of record.

## Why Uncap

**The line between product and build, in writing.** Account pricing, reorder lists, services as line items, quote approvals and order conversion ship in Uncap Portal and Uncap Quotes. The formula library, batch allocation, ship-to rules, SDS records and kit pairing are built during implementation. The scope shows which is which before the build starts.

**Built on the records you already keep.** Your dispensers often hold the formulas, your ERP may hold base batches, and your compliance team keeps its own do-not-ship list. The build reads those records instead of asking the counter to keep a second copy.

**Credentials you can check.** Uncap is a Shopify Platinum Partner, on Shopify since 2013, with 380+ unified storefronts launched on Shopify.

**Scoped before it is built.** The [Uncap Blueprint](https://www.uncap.com/blueprint) is a fixed-price, four-week plan, credited 1:1 toward implementation. It covers solution architecture, data taxonomy, an ERP integration audit, UX and flow prototyping and total cost of ownership, and ends with a risk register and a fixed-cost implementation estimate. For a paint business, that architecture work can cover your bases, formulas, batches and ship-to rules. You walk with everything you need to brief any agency or your in-house team.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Shopify handle tinted paint, saved formulas and VOC rules, or do we need a heavier platform?

Shopify can carry the commerce side. On Shopify, the formula library, batch matching and ship-to rule table are built during implementation against the base catalog synced from your ERP. Which products may ship where is your compliance team's decision, taken from the rules EPA, the states and the air districts publish, and the build applies that list. The other worry is an ERP integration that does not fully support Shopify B2B companies and catalogs, which Shopify's help center itself flags. Uncap Connect is embedded inside Shopify and syncs customer-specific pricing, credit terms and tax rules, so account data reaches those rules from the ERP.

### What is a tint base?

A tint base is the untinted paint your warehouse stocks, made to receive colorant in a paint store or on site. EPA's rule defines it as "a coating to which colorant is added in a paint store or at the site of application to produce a desired color." Many products come in several bases. Sherwin-Williams lists one industrial urethane in Extra White, Deep Base and Ultradeep Base, and Benjamin Moore data sheets name a Pastel Base. A color formula is dispensed into one of those bases.

### Why do VOC limits differ by state and air district?

Because EPA's national rule leaves room for state and local rules. EPA's rule says it must not be construed to preclude any state or political subdivision from adopting and enforcing its own emissions standard for manufacturers and importers of architectural coatings. In California, CARB writes a model rule each air district may adopt, and notes that adjacent districts may have different rules. In the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, the Ozone Transport Commission wrote a model rule for states to use as a template. The storefront applies the list your compliance team maintains for each ship-to address.

### Does the colorant count toward a tinted gallon's VOC?

Under EPA's national rule and South Coast AQMD Rule 1113, not toward the tint base's limit, but Rule 1113 regulates the colorant separately. EPA's rule says "The VOC content of a tint base shall be determined without colorant that is added after the tint base is manufactured or imported." Rule 1113 likewise measures a coating's VOC excluding colorant added to tint bases. It then separately prohibits adding colorant at the point of sale that exceeds its own colorant limits. So the colorant used belongs on the order record. The base matters too: Benjamin Moore's data sheets note that reported values are for the pastel base.

### How do contractors reorder the same color for the same job?

From a formula library stored under their company account and each named job. Uncap Portal keeps reorder lists and order history a click away. The formula library, with the date and store of the last mix, is built during implementation. A crew lead reorders the Building C corridor color by name, and the counter dispenses the same formula into the same base.

### Should multiple gallons of one color be boxed?

Some manufacturers advise it. One Rust-Oleum data sheet says multiple containers of tinted paint should be boxed, or intermixed, to ensure color uniformity. A batch-aware storefront, built during implementation, promises a quantity only where one base batch can fill it and records the batch on the order. Otherwise the order carries a boxing instruction or goes to a quote.

### Which ERPs does this connect to?

Uncap publishes twelve ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage and SAP. The Epicor Eagle page names paint stores among the businesses Eagle runs. Integrations are delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. Where your formulas and base batches live is confirmed during scoping.

### What is the difference between this page and the building materials page?

The building materials page covers how dimensional products are sold: measure, calculate, round to sellable units, quote the job and show ERP lead time. This page covers a product assembled at the counter from a base and a formula, matched by batch, and sold only where the ship-to rules allow.
