summary: "Uncap builds thermostat and HVAC controls B2B ecommerce on Shopify for manufacturers and distributors selling thermostats, zone panels, dampers and sensors to HVAC contractors, controls integrators and facility buyers. Often the product family does not answer the buyer's question. The model number does. Each thermostat, panel and sensor record carries what the manufacturer's installation instructions say: the system types it supports, heat and cool stages for each, changeover support, whether a C wire is required, optional or needed for one feature, voltage class, and sensor inputs. # Sell Thermostats and Controls That Match the Installed System

> Uncap builds thermostat and HVAC controls B2B ecommerce on Shopify for manufacturers and distributors selling thermostats, zone panels, dampers and sensors to HVAC contractors, controls integrators and facility buyers. Uncap's published products do not include an HVAC compatibility engine; on Shopify, this layer is built during implementation from your installation instructions and product data.

## The challenge

**Where a generic storefront breaks for thermostats and controls**

Often the product family does not answer the buyer's question. The model number does.

| | Factor | Generic storefront setup | What thermostat and controls sellers need |

| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| Model, not family | A contractor replacing the thermostat on a two-stage heat pump who picks the family from a product grid can end up with a model that has one compressor stage. | Each record carries the system types, heat and cool stages, changeover support and sensor inputs from the manufacturer's installation instructions, built during implementation. |
| C wire and voltage | Power and voltage can rule a thermostat out before features do, and two models in one line can return different answers on the same wiring. | Whether a C wire is required, optional or needed for one feature, and the voltage class, carried on each model's record, built during implementation. |
| Zoning jobs | One zone panel order can be five kinds of product: a panel, thermostats, dampers, a transformer and sensors. | Panel, a thermostat for each zone, dampers, transformer and sensors on one quote, with damper load and transformer checks built during implementation. |
| Pro-only lines | Some lines are sold through the trade, and the storefront has to keep them out of the public catalog. | Contractor-only lines set up as Shopify B2B-only products, which only logged-in B2B customers can access, configured during implementation. |
| Rebate-listed models | One utility's rebate is written against model numbers, and its qualified products list is dated. | A rebate flag for each model, per utility program and list date, built during implementation and kept current by your team. |

**The family name gets you close. The model number decides.** Resideo's [wiring diagrams for the Honeywell Home T6 Pro](https://digitalassets.resideo.com/damroot/Original/10004/33-00323.pdf) cover three models under one name: TH6320U2008, TH6220U2000 and TH6210U2001. The 3 heat, 2 cool heat pump diagram lists one compatible model, the TH6320U2008, and the 2 heat, 1 cool dual fuel diagram lists the TH6220U2000 and TH6320U2008. Resideo's T6 Pro submittal sheet rates the TH6220U2000 and TH6210U2001 for "Up to 2H/1C Heat Pump systems" and the TH6320U2008 for "Up to 3H/2C Heat Pump systems." A contractor replacing the thermostat on a two-stage heat pump who picks "T6 Pro" from a product grid can end up with a model that has one compressor stage.

**A heat pump changes which terminals matter.** In the same diagrams, each heat pump wires its reversing valve to the O/B terminal, with a note that some heat pumps use B rather than O for the reversing valve. Each heat pump diagram also warns against connecting any wire to W, which can cause heat to run continuously. The submittal lists the wired indoor and outdoor sensors as "Not compatible with TH6210U model." So each SKU's record has to carry system type, stages, changeover and sensor inputs, not just a photo and a price.

**Power and voltage can rule a thermostat out before features do.** Copeland's [Sensi Wire Picker](https://webapps.copeland.com/resources/wire-picker.aspx) states that "Sensi thermostat is rated for 20-30 VAC," that it "is not compatible with line voltage systems," and that Sensi thermostats "are not compatible with millivolt system." The same tool can return different answers for two models in one line: the Sensi smart thermostat "is compatible with no modifications," while the system "needs a common wire for Sensi Touch and Sensi Touch 2." Resideo's T6 Pro wiring diagrams mark the common wire optional, and its user manual says that if the thermostat was not wired to run on AC power, "then batteries are required." Communicating systems with proprietary terminals are a third case the wire picker rules out for Sensi.

**One zone panel order can be five kinds of product.** Resideo's [HZ432 TrueZONE submittal](https://customer.resideo.com/resources/Techlit/TechLitDocuments/68-0000s/68-3071.pdf) says the panel controls conventional or heat pump equipment "up to 3 stages of heat and 2 stages of cool," runs 2, 3 or 4 zones, and "is expandable to 32 zones" with an add-a-zone panel. If the thermostats are to control staging, "multi-stage thermostats are required." Resideo does "not recommend using thermostats that operate on phantom voltage or power-stealing mode" with it. The submittal lists a maximum damper load of 28.8 VA per zone at 100°F, with a secondary damper control relay for additional dampers, and says the "Maximum number of dampers per panel is limited by transformer size." So one zoning job is a panel, a thermostat and dampers for each zone, a transformer sized to the dampers, and sensors such as the discharge air temperature sensor in the HZ432K kit.

**Some lines are sold through the trade.** Honeywell Home says "The T10 Pro is sold through our professional HVAC installers." Google's copy guide for its Pro thermostat introduces "the trade-exclusive Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) Pro" and states that its HVAC System Health Monitor "is only available to registered Nest Pros." If you carry lines like these, the storefront should show them to approved contractor accounts and keep them out of the public catalog.

**One utility's rebate is written against model numbers, and its list is dated.** [Clark Public Utilities' smart thermostat rebate form](https://www.clarkpublicutilities.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Smart-Thermostat-Rebate-Form-August-2026-Fillable.pdf), from a Washington utility, offers a "Rebate of $140 per qualifying smart thermostat" and says "Only approved qualified products are eligible for a rebate." It excludes "Any Lite version of the ecobee thermostat," requires installation on an electric furnace or ducted heat pump, asks for the thermostat's model and serial number, and lets the customer sign the payment over to the contractor. Its qualified products list carries an update date, 8/3/2026. Which of your models qualify, in which territory, under which list, is a product fact a contractor may need at quote time.

## The Uncap solution

**From the installed system to the models that can run it**

Uncap's published products do not include an HVAC compatibility engine; on Shopify, this layer is built during implementation from your installation instructions and product data.

### 1. Describe, The contractor describes the installed system

Or enters the terminal letters from the old thermostat.
- Terminal-letter lookup built during implementation

### 2. Match, Only the models that can run it

Each thermostat, panel and sensor record carries system types, stages, changeover, C wire, voltage class and sensor inputs.
- Built during implementation from your installation instructions and product data
- Attributes already held in your ERP or PIM synced, configured during implementation
- Contractor-only lines that only logged-in B2B customers can access, configured during implementation
- Rebate flags by utility program and list date, built during implementation

### 3. Quote, A zoning job quoted as one order

Uncap Quotes runs configure, price, quote inside the Shopify admin, with negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks applied automatically.
- Damper load and transformer checks built during implementation
- Validity windows and a full revision history
- An approved quote turns straight into a Shopify order

**Compatibility stored as data, checked against the job.** Each thermostat, panel and sensor record carries what the manufacturer's installation instructions say: the system types it supports, heat and cool stages for each, changeover support, whether a C wire is required, optional or needed for one feature, voltage class, and sensor inputs. A contractor describes the installed system, or enters the terminal letters from the old thermostat, and sees only the models that can run it. Accessories are checked the same way. Because the T6 Pro's wired indoor and outdoor sensors are not compatible with the TH6210U, a sensor in the cart is checked against the thermostat it will wire to, built during implementation. Uncap's published products do not include an HVAC compatibility engine; on Shopify, this layer is built during implementation from your installation instructions and product data. Syncing attributes already held in your ERP or PIM is configured during implementation. Attributes that live only in PDFs become product data as part of the scope.

**Zoning jobs quoted as one order.** A zone panel quote can carry the panel, a thermostat for each zone, dampers by size, the transformer and the sensors, with a check that damper load per zone and transformer size stay inside the panel maker's published limits, or that a secondary damper control relay is on the quote, built during implementation. The quote runs through [Uncap Quotes](https://www.uncap.com/products/quotes), which runs configure, price, quote inside the Shopify admin. Negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks apply automatically. Quotes carry validity windows and a full revision history, exceptions go to the right approver, and an approved quote turns straight into a Shopify order.

**Pro-only lines behind the contractor account.** Shopify's B2B documentation states that "only logged-in B2B customers can access B2B-specific pricing, B2B-only products, and B2B-exclusive store content." So contractor-only lines can be set up as B2B-only products, configured during implementation. Restricting a whole store to signed-in buyers is a separate setting, and there Shopify notes: "If you need a full login-wall experience, then you might need a third-party app or custom Liquid development." [Uncap Portal](https://www.uncap.com/products/portal) gives contractors real multi-user accounts with roles and permissions, and each buyer sees their assortment and pricing. Approving new contractor accounts against your criteria is configured during implementation.

**Rebate eligibility on the product record.** A rebate flag for each model, per utility program and list date, is built during implementation and kept current by your team, so the contractor sees which models qualify before quoting.

**The platform question, answered on integration.** One argument against Shopify for this catalog comes from Shopify's own help center: "Some integrations in the Shopify App Store aren't fully compatible with Shopify B2B, specifically companies and catalogs." That is a warning about integrations, so the question is whether yours writes to companies and catalogs. Integration runs through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. On the Connect route, [Uncap Connect](https://www.uncap.com/products/connect) runs inside Shopify with no separate middleware to maintain, keeps pricing, inventory, customers and orders in real-time, two-way sync, and syncs "customer-specific pricing, credit terms, and tax rules." The ERP stays the system of record. Where the compatibility and gating rules live, in the ERP, a PIM or Shopify, is decided in scoping.

**Proof, at its true size.** Uncap built a Shopify store for [ENASTAT](https://www.uncap.com/work/enastat), ENA Solution's "smart commercial thermostat." ENA Solution needed a store to "sway HVAC professionals and business owners/operators to order online." The published results list "Canada and US commerce-enabled," "Live chat integration for engagement with inquisitive and high-volume purchasers" and "A content-rich website with an SEO-optimized blog." Co-founder Ramin Tajallipour: "Uncap knew exactly what their expertise was, and they exceeded our expectations." It is a storefront build for a commercial thermostat sold to HVAC professionals, not proof of a compatibility engine or an ERP integration.

## Why Uncap

**The line between product and build, in writing.** Account pricing, quote approvals, validity windows, one-click order conversion, multi-user contractor accounts and ERP sync ship in Uncap Quotes, Uncap Portal and Uncap Connect. Model-level compatibility, terminal lookup, zoning checks and rebate flags are built during implementation from your data, and contractor-only visibility is configured on Shopify B2B. The scope says which is which.

**Credentials you can check.** Uncap is a Shopify Platinum Partner, on Shopify since 2013, with 380+ unified storefronts launched on Shopify.

**Scoped before it is built.** The [Uncap Blueprint](https://www.uncap.com/blueprint) is a fixed-price, four-week Shopify migration plan, credited 1:1 toward implementation. It covers solution architecture, a data migration taxonomy, an ERP integration audit, UX and flow prototyping, total cost of ownership and a risk register, and ends with a fixed-cost implementation estimate. For a controls manufacturer or distributor, that architecture work can cover the compatibility attributes, pro-line visibility rules, zoning kits and the ERP connection. You walk with everything you need to brief any agency or your in-house team.

## Ready to talk

Bring two documents. The first is the installation instructions for your best-selling thermostat family, the pages that say which model runs which system. The second is your price list with the contractor-only lines marked. Together they show how much of the catalog hangs on a compatibility answer, and how much the public should never see.

Book a strategy session with Uncap, or start with a Blueprint if what you need first is the compatibility data model, the visibility rules and the ERP connection written down and costed.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Shopify a sound choice for a controls distributor on Epicor Eclipse with contractor-only lines?

It can be, provided the integration writes to Shopify's B2B companies and catalogs. Shopify's own help center notes that some App Store integrations "aren't fully compatible with Shopify B2B, specifically companies and catalogs." Its note that a full login-wall experience might need a third-party app or custom Liquid development concerns restricting the whole store; contractor-only lines can be B2B-only products, which Shopify limits to logged-in B2B customers. Integration runs through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. On the Connect route there is no separate middleware: Connect keeps pricing, inventory, customers and orders in real-time, two-way sync, syncs customer-specific pricing, credit terms and tax rules, and Eclipse stays the system of record. Model-level compatibility is built during implementation.

### How do you know if a thermostat will work with a heat pump?

Check the model's installation instructions, not the product family. Resideo's T6 Pro wiring diagrams, for example, put the reversing valve on the O/B terminal, warn against connecting any wire to W in heat pump applications, and list only the TH6320U2008 for a 2 heat, 2 cool or 3 heat, 2 cool heat pump. Resideo's submittal rates the TH6220U2000 and TH6210U2001 for up to 2 heat, 1 cool heat pump systems. A storefront can carry those limits as product data, so a contractor with a two-stage heat pump sees only the models that support both stages.

### Does every smart thermostat need a C wire?

No, it depends on the model and the feature. Copeland's Sensi Wire Picker can show the Sensi smart thermostat working with no modifications on a system where Sensi Touch and Sensi Touch 2 need a common wire. Resideo's T6 Pro, a programmable model, shows the common wire as optional in its wiring diagrams, and its user manual says batteries are required if the thermostat was not wired to run on AC power.

### What is the difference between a line voltage and a low voltage thermostat?

In Copeland's guidance, the system voltage. Copeland rates its Sensi thermostats for 20-30 VAC and states that Sensi "is not compatible with line voltage systems." Its field guidance is that a line voltage thermostat "will typically have wires larger than 18 gauge and may not have terminal labels," and that you or a contractor should measure with a multimeter when unsure. On the storefront, voltage class belongs on each thermostat record as a filter the buyer cannot miss.

### How are zone panels, dampers and thermostats ordered together?

As one job, because the panel sets the limits for the rest. Resideo's HZ432 submittal, for example, requires multi-stage thermostats when the thermostats control staging, lists a maximum damper load per zone, and ties the number of dampers to transformer size. On Shopify, the kit is quoted through Uncap Quotes, with the damper and transformer checks built during implementation.

### Can contractor-only thermostat lines be hidden from the public on Shopify?

Shopify's B2B documentation says only logged-in B2B customers can access B2B-only products and B2B-specific pricing, so contractor-only lines can be set up as B2B-only products, configured during implementation. A dedicated B2B store can also be restricted so that only logged-in B2B customers can view it. Restricting a whole store is a separate step, and for that Shopify notes a full login-wall experience might need a third-party app or custom Liquid development. Contractor accounts sit in Uncap Portal, with roles and permissions.

### Do utility thermostat rebates depend on the model?

They can. Clark Public Utilities in Washington, for one, offers $140 per qualifying smart thermostat, states that "Only approved qualified products are eligible for a rebate," excludes Lite versions of one brand's thermostat for lacking built-in occupancy sensing, and dates its qualified products list. Check each program's own list. A storefront can flag qualifying models for each program and list date, built during implementation.

### Which ERPs does this connect to?

Uncap publishes twelve ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage and SAP. Integration pages linked from the plumbing, HVAC and mechanical page include Epicor Eclipse, Infor SX.e and Epicor Prophet 21. Integrations are delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. Whether your compatibility attributes live in the ERP, a PIM or spreadsheets is confirmed during scoping.

### What is the difference between this page and the plumbing, HVAC and mechanical page?

The plumbing, HVAC and mechanical page covers the supply house: lookup from the unit's nameplate, supersession, fittings, will call and truck stock. This page covers what controls add: the model-level compatibility check, zone panel kits, contractor-only lines and rebate-listed models. Equipment and its repair parts sit on the HVAC equipment and parts page.
