Talk to our experts- UL listing
- UL listing is safety certification of a product by UL Solutions, shown by the UL Listed Mark on items such as furnaces and heaters, fuses, electrical panel boards and fire extinguishers. UL says its safety Mark means a product has been certified to meet scientific safety, quality or security standards, and that it keeps checking products after testing.
Also called: UL Listed, UL Listed Mark
How it works
UL listing means a product carries UL Solutions' Listed Mark, one of the many variations of UL Solutions' safety certification Marks. UL Solutions describes itself as a global independent safety science company. It says it continues to check products months and years after testing to make sure they still meet the requirements.
The word "listed" also has a meaning in US workplace rules. In OSHA's electrical standards (29 CFR 1910.399), equipment is listed if it is of a kind mentioned in a list that:
- is published by a nationally recognized laboratory that makes periodic inspection of the production of such equipment, and
- states that the equipment meets nationally recognized standards or has been tested and found safe for use in a specified manner.
Listings can be checked in UL Product iQ, UL Solutions' database for finding UL Listed and UL Certified products, components and materials. It supports searches by file number, product type, category control number (CCN) and model number.
UL Listed vs UL Recognized vs UL Classified
UL Solutions describes several marks, and they cover different things:
- UL Listed Mark: appears on products such as furnaces and heaters, fuses, electrical panel boards and fire extinguishers.
- UL Recognized Component Mark: used on components that are part of a larger UL Certified product or system.
- UL Classified Mark: commonly appears on products evaluated for a specific hazard or for performance under specific conditions.
UL also lists the Enhanced UL Certification Mark and the ULC Mark among its safety certification marks.
When UL listing matters
For workplaces, OSHA's electrical rules (29 CFR 1910.303) accept the conductors and equipment required or permitted by Subpart S only if approved. Equipment counts as approved if it is accepted, certified, listed, labeled or otherwise determined to be safe by a nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL) recognized by OSHA, with other routes for equipment no NRTL covers and for custom-made equipment. The rule names no single laboratory. As of October 28, 2026, UL LLC is on OSHA's current list of NRTLs. This is general information, not legal or regulatory advice.
Example
An electrical distributor carries 600 SKUs, and supplier spec sheets show a UL file number for 540 of them: 540 / 600 = 90 percent. Before marking those 540 as UL Listed online, the team looks up each file number and model in UL Product iQ.
On Shopify
Shopify Search & Discovery filters are based on product options, metafields or metaobjects. A true or false product metafield, such as UL Listed, can back a storefront filter. Choosing values from different filters is an and condition, so a buyer can combine a UL Listed filter with a voltage filter. Store the attribute in a metafield first.
How Uncap helps
Uncap's guide to electrical distributor ordering portals explains that IDEA-compliant product records carry standardized attributes, including compliance documentation such as UL listing and RoHS status. A second standard, ETIM, lets technical products be classified and uniformly described by product groups, classes, synonyms, features, values and units.

Is a UL listing required in the USA?
