Shopify B2B for Distribution Ecommerce

A catalog that runs six or seven figures deep, twelve price levels, four warehouses, and buyers who order the same forty items every other week. A standard storefront chokes on all of it. We build distributor ecommerce on Shopify that turns catalog depth into the advantage it was supposed to be.

Shopify B2B for distribution combines Shopify Plus's native B2B foundation with what a distributor actually needs on top of it: catalog architecture that stays fast at hundreds of thousands or millions of stock keeping units (SKUs), product information management (PIM), tier and contract pricing per account, bulk and quick ordering, and real-time ERP integration. One B2B distribution platform, not five tools taped together. This page covers the whole picture.

01 The problem

The problem: distributor ecommerce held together with duct tape

Most distributors did not choose their ecommerce stack. It accumulated.

A storefront that was never built for the catalog it carries. Search that cannot find a part number. Item data pulled from forty suppliers in forty formats, cleaned up just enough to publish and never touched again. Buyers give up after two searches and call the branch instead, which means the catalog's depth, the thing that wins the business, is invisible online.

Behind the storefront, the process is manual. Orders arrive by phone, email, and fax, then get re-keyed into the enterprise resource planning system (ERP) by hand. Price levels live in the ERP, in a spreadsheet, and in a sales rep's head, and the website shows a fourth number that matches none of them. Availability is a nightly snapshot of four warehouses, which means it is wrong by 9am.

And in a business where margin is measured in single digits, all of that manual work is margin walking out the door. Every re-keyed order, every pricing error, every wrong-warehouse promise costs money the operation cannot spare. Nobody is working on growth, because everyone is working the queue.

This is also where AI actually earns its keep, and it is not a chatbot on the homepage. AI takes the robot work: retyping emails into orders, normalizing supplier item data, reconciling systems that should have been in sync all along. Your team does the work that grows the business.

Key takeaway

Depth and availability are the product. If the storefront cannot show both, accurately and instantly, the catalog is a liability instead of an asset.

02 Why Shopify

Why Shopify for distributors

Distributors moving off legacy platforms usually ask the same first question: is Shopify serious enough for a catalog like ours? Short answer, yes. Here is the longer one.

  • Infrastructure you never think about. Shopify handles hosting, uptime, performance, and peak load as part of the platform. No servers to patch, no version upgrades that eat a quarter, no capacity planning meeting before a busy season.
  • An ecosystem instead of a dead end. Thousands of apps, integrations, and partners. When you need a capability, it usually exists. When it doesn't, the platform is built to be extended. That is exactly where Uncap products live.
  • Scalability by default. The same platform runs single-founder shops and billion-dollar brands. Catalog depth, order volume, account count: you grow, it keeps up. No replatforming cliff waiting three years out.
  • Security that is someone else's full-time job. PCI compliance, fraud tooling, and platform-level security handled by Shopify, not by your IT person on top of everything else.
  • Simplicity your team will actually use. The admin is clean enough that ops, purchasing, and sales can all work in it without a training program. Shopify's built-in AI assistant, Sidekick, helps your team manage the store in plain language: analyzing sales, adjusting settings, and building segments without hunting through menus.

The pattern here matters. Every hour your old platform demanded for maintenance is an hour Shopify gives back. That is where growth work comes from.

Uncap has built Shopify for distributors and other B2B operators as a Shopify Platinum Partner and Shopify Expert since 2013. The platform holds. What separates the outcomes is what gets built on it.

03 Out of the box

What Shopify B2B gives you out of the box

Shopify Plus ships with native B2B primitives. Not bolted on, built in. For a distributor, the pricing machinery is the headline:

  • Price lists, tiers, and contract pricing. Customer-specific price levels, volume breaks, and negotiated contract pricing per account. Every buyer sees their price, and only their price.
  • Quantity rules and volume pricing. Case packs, minimums, increments, and price breaks that update as quantities change. The buyer sees the break before they hit it, which is how order values grow on their own.
  • Curated catalogs per account. Each customer sees the products they buy, in their terms. A 500,000-SKU catalog becomes a focused storefront for every account.
  • Company profiles and customer permissions. Multiple locations, multiple buyers, one account, with control over who can browse, order, and approve. The purchasing structure your customers already run.
  • B2B payment terms and checkout. Net terms, draft orders, purchase order numbers, and vaulted payment methods, handled natively at checkout instead of worked around.

This is the floor, not the ceiling. What separates a functional B2B store from a distribution revenue operation is what gets built on top. That is the rest of this page.

04 Catalog and PIM

The catalog is the business: SKUs at scale and PIM

For a distributor, the catalog is not a page on the website. It is the website. Hundreds of thousands of SKUs, sometimes millions, sourced from dozens or hundreds of suppliers, each with their own item numbers, attribute formats, and data quality. Getting that catalog online, accurate, and findable is the single hardest problem in distribution ecommerce, and the one we take most seriously.

  • Architecture built for depth. Catalog structure, data models, and storefront performance designed for seven-figure SKU counts from day one. The catalog stays fast at full depth, not just at demo depth.
  • Product information management (PIM), implemented right. At this scale, item data needs a single source of truth. We implement and integrate PIM with Shopify as part of the build: supplier data normalized, attributes standardized, spec sheets and images attached, cross-references mapped. Clean data in one place, published everywhere.
  • Search that speaks distributor. Buyers search by part number, manufacturer number, cross-reference, spec, or plain description. Faceted filtering narrows a million SKUs to the right five in seconds. If search cannot find it, you do not stock it, as far as the buyer knows.
  • Attributes that keep paying. Structured item data does triple duty: it powers filtering for buyers, search visibility for new customers, and machine readability for the AI agents coming next. The PIM work is done once and earns three times.
Key takeaway

Catalog depth only wins when buyers can navigate it. Architecture, PIM, and search are what turn a million SKUs from a liability into the moat.

05 Ordering speed

Ordering at distributor speed: bulk, quick order, and reorder

Your buyers are professionals restocking a business, not shoppers browsing. They know what they want, they order it in volume, and they order it again in two weeks. The storefront should be built for exactly that buyer:

  • Quick order pad. Type or paste part numbers and quantities, add fifty lines to the cart in one motion. The fastest path from list to order.
  • Bulk ordering by file. Upload the order as a file, review, submit. The purchase order your buyer already builds becomes the order in your system, without an email in between.
  • Order guides and saved lists. Standing lists of what each account buys, organized their way. The monthly stock-up becomes a two-minute task.
  • One-click reorder. Last month's order is one click away from being this month's order, with live pricing and availability checked on the way to the cart.
  • Volume pricing in plain sight. Price breaks visible as quantities change, so buyers round up to the break on their own. Order value grows without a discount and without a phone call.

Every one of these removes a reason to call the branch. Buyers move online when online is genuinely faster than the phone, and not before. That is the bar we build to.

06 Unified commerce

Unified Commerce: B2B and B2C on one platform

Most distributors do not sell one way. There are house accounts on terms, walk-in and counter business, contractors who buy like consumers with a discount, and sometimes a retail or marketplace channel on top.

The old answer was a separate system per channel, which meant separate catalogs, separate inventory counts, and a reconciliation job that never ends. The Shopify answer is one platform: B2B and B2C on the same backend, one catalog, one inventory truth, with each audience getting its own experience, pricing, and terms.

Accounts keep their contract pricing and terms. Cash buyers get a modern storefront. The counter stops being an island. You get one system to run instead of three.

We call this Unified Commerce, and it has its own dedicated page if this is the problem you are solving first.

07 Agentic commerce

Agentic Commerce: the next buyer might be an agent

One more channel is forming, and distributors with clean catalogs will be first in line for it.

AI buying agents are starting to research, source, and purchase on behalf of buyers. They cannot parse a PDF line card or fill out a request form. They can read a well-structured Shopify catalog: part numbers, specs, cross-references, pricing, availability, all in machine-readable order.

For a distributor, this lands harder than for most. Sourcing is search, and agents are becoming the searchers. The PIM and attribute work from Section 04 is the same work that makes your catalog the one an agent can actually buy from. You do it once and it serves both.

This is early, and we treat it that way: no hype, just readiness. More on where this is going on the Agentic Commerce page.

08 Growth

Optimized for growth: conversion, order value, and margin

A storefront that launches and then sits still is a depreciating asset. We build for the numbers that compound: conversion rate, average order value (AOV), lines per order, and margin per order.

  • Discovery and findability. Buyers who find the right SKU buy it. Search tuned for how professionals actually look: part numbers, specs, applications, brand lines.
  • Alternates and substitutes. When the exact item is out, the storefront offers the equivalent instead of a dead end. The sale survives the stockout.
  • Cross-sells that finish the job. The fittings that go with the pipe. The consumables that go with the equipment. Lines per order climb because the suggestion genuinely helps.
  • Reorder prompts. Buyers restocking on a cycle get nudged before they run out, on the storefront and by email. Retention you can measure.
  • Margin through pricing accuracy. Contract prices honored, breaks applied correctly, no rep discounting from memory. Tight pricing is quiet margin.

Launch gets you to the starting line. Managed Growth is the ongoing engagement that keeps moving these numbers month after month: revenue, optimization, retention, and operations, shipped weekly.

09 Account portal

The account portal: give your best buyers their own door

Your top accounts should not shop the way an anonymous visitor does. They have contract pricing, standing orders, purchasing teams with roles and limits, and a relationship with your business that goes well past the cart.

Uncap Portal gives them a private experience tied to your Shopify backend:

  • Their catalog, their pricing, their terms. Each account sees its own products, its contract prices, and its payment terms. Nothing generic, nothing public.
  • Everything past the product. Services, rentals, warranty claims, rebates, and account credits, all handled in the same portal as the order. What used to be a phone call to your team becomes self-serve.
  • Order guides and quick reorder. Full order history, saved lists, and one-click reorder. The weekly restock takes minutes, not a phone call.
  • Their team, their rules. Multi-user accounts with role and permission control that mirror how the buyer's purchasing team actually works.

For distributors, this is how house accounts and the open storefront live side by side without conflict: each through its own door, one operation behind all of them. Your biggest accounts get service that scales without scaling the team that provides it.

10 ERP integration

ERP integration: the loop finally closed

An online order that stops at the cart is half an order. Someone still has to get it into the ERP, and everything re-keyed is everything that can drift: pricing, inventory, customer terms, fulfillment status. At distribution order volumes, drift is not an annoyance. It is a payroll line.

Uncap Connect closes that loop. It is a native, embedded, two-way sync between Shopify and your ERP, built for B2B from the ground up. Orders flow from the storefront into the ERP in real time. Inventory, pricing, customer terms, and fulfillment updates flow back the other way. No middleware platform for your team to babysit. No overnight batch pretending to be real time.

The distribution specifics are the point: multi-warehouse inventory synced at the location level, so buyers order against what is actually on the shelf. Contract and tier pricing fed from the ERP, so the storefront and the invoice always agree. Credit terms and tax rules honored the way B2B actually works.

Some operations are better served by a managed middleware approach instead, and we build and run those too. The Integrations page walks through both paths and when each one fits. Or go straight to Uncap Connect.

11 The products

Built for what you distribute

Distribution is not one industry. It is dozens, and some of them come with buying patterns that need purpose-built capability. Four Uncap products cover the patterns we see most, listed alphabetically:

  • Uncap Builder: kits and bundles. For distributors who sell kits, assemblies, or build-your-own bundles. Buyers assemble multi-item bundles priced as one, with rules-based compatibility so the wrong combination never reaches the cart.
  • Uncap Diagrams: shop by diagram. For equipment and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts distributors. Exploded diagrams become the storefront: buyers pinpoint the part on the schematic, pins convert to a bill of materials (BOM), and the selection checks out as one order.
  • Uncap Garage: Year-Make-Model fitment. For automotive and powersports parts distributors. Buyers pick their vehicle and see only what fits, powered by Aftermarket Catalog Exchange Standard (ACES) and Product Information Exchange Standard (PIES) data. Right part, first time, fewer returns eating margin.
  • Uncap Quotes: the full CPQ workflow. For negotiated and large-volume orders. The configure-price-quote (CPQ) workflow runs natively in Shopify: build, send, revise, negotiate, approve, and convert the approved quote to an order in one click. The big orders stop living in inboxes.

You will not need all four. Most distributors need one or two, matched to what actually moves through the warehouse. That match is a conversation, and it is a short one. Talk to Our Experts.

12 Internal case

The case to make internally

At some point you have to defend this to a partner, a CFO, or yourself wearing the finance hat. Here is that case, plainly. In a margin-thin business, it is mostly a math case.

  • Fewer tools. A legacy platform license, a search vendor, a portal vendor, middleware, and the maintenance retainer that keeps them speaking. This consolidates onto Shopify plus the specific Uncap products your operation actually needs.
  • Cost per order, down. Every order that arrives clean through the storefront instead of by phone is an order nobody re-keys. At distribution volumes, self-serve ordering is a cost line, not a convenience.
  • Error cost, down. Synced pricing and location-level inventory mean fewer wrong prices honored and fewer promises made against stock that is not there. In single-digit margins, accuracy is profit.
  • One partner, fixed scope. Shopify Build is priced as a fixed-scope implementation. The budget you approve is the budget you spend. No vendor handoffs, no gaps where two contracts meet.
  • Subscriptions without the seat tax. Uncap products are priced to the workflow, not per user. Uncap Connect in particular: low cost, reliable, embedded, with no per-seat pricing to punish you for growing the team.

The line for the meeting: this is not another tool added to the pile. It is the pile, replaced.

13 Proof

Proof from the warehouse

ULE Group, a wholesale electrical and industrial distributor with a catalog of over one million SKUs, needed exactly this build: a large catalog made findable, business pricing and terms, and an ERP that stays in sync. Uncap delivered a Shopify B2B platform with PIM-managed item data, search with over 100 filters, product alternatives when an item is out of stock, and real-time inventory and pricing synced from Epicor.

“Shopify allowed us to move quickly while laying a strong foundation for growth, scalability, and future enhancements. Its built-in performance, security, and flexibility gave us the confidence to deliver a great B2B experience without delaying time to market.”

14 Where to start

Where to start

First, the fear worth naming: this is not an 18-month consulting rollout. Commerce is fixed scope with an agreed timeline. Products install on top of the Shopify store you will already have. You do not pause the business to do this.

Three ways in, depending on where you stand:

  • Planning the move? Uncap Blueprint maps the architecture first: catalog and PIM strategy, ERP integration roadmap, replatforming risk, data migration taxonomy, and a total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis that holds up under scrutiny. A real plan before a build contract.
  • Ready to build? Shopify Build is a fixed-scope implementation: migration, catalog and data work, design, development, integrations, and launch. Scope agreed up front. No hourly surprises.
  • Already live on Shopify? Managed Growth improves the operation every month: conversion, order value, retention, and the operational work that compounds.

Ready to get started?

Straight to solutions. No pitch deck. No slick spin. No B.S.

15 Common questions

Answers, before you ask.

Can Shopify handle a catalog with millions of SKUs?

Yes, with the right architecture. Shopify Build builds the catalog structure, data models, search, and sync for depth from day one, so a catalog of hundreds of thousands or millions of SKUs stays fast, accurate, and findable.

Do we need a PIM to sell a large catalog online?

At serious catalog scale, yes: supplier data arrives in too many formats to manage by hand. Uncap implements and integrates product information management with Shopify as part of the build, so item data has one source of truth and publishes clean everywhere.

Will tier and contract pricing show correctly for each account?

Yes. Shopify B2B price lists handle tiers, volume breaks, and contract pricing per account, and Uncap Connect keeps those prices synced from the ERP, so the storefront and the invoice always agree.

Can buyers place bulk orders quickly?

Yes. We build quick order pads for part-number entry, file upload for bulk orders, and order guides with saved lists, so a fifty-line order takes minutes. Volume price breaks show as quantities change.

How does reordering work for repeat buyers?

Uncap Portal gives each account order history, saved order guides, and one-click reorder with live pricing and availability. Last month's order becomes this month's order in seconds.

How does multi-warehouse inventory stay accurate online?

Uncap Connect syncs location-level inventory from the ERP in real time, so buyers order against what is actually on the shelf, not a nightly snapshot.

Will online orders reach our ERP without re-keying?

Yes. Uncap Connect syncs orders from Shopify into the ERP in real time and pushes fulfillment status back to the storefront. Nothing gets re-keyed, and nothing drifts.

Can we serve house accounts and walk-in buyers from one platform?

Yes. Shopify runs B2B and B2C on one backend: accounts keep contract pricing and terms through their portal, cash buyers get the open storefront, and one catalog and inventory truth sits behind both.

Will our catalog work with AI shopping agents?

If it is structured well on Shopify, yes. AI buying agents need machine-readable part numbers, specs, pricing, and availability, which is exactly what the PIM and attribute work in an Uncap build produces. One catalog serves human buyers and AI agents alike.

Where should a distributor start?

Planning a move, start with Uncap Blueprint. Ready to build, start with Shopify Build. Already live, start with Managed Growth. If you are not sure which you are, that is what Talk to Our Experts is for.
