Talk to our experts- EDI 867 (Product Transfer and Resale Report)
- An EDI 867 is the X12 Product Transfer and Resale Report: the transaction set used to report product transferred from one location to another, or sales of product from one or more locations to an end customer, optionally with demand beyond actual sales (lost orders). X12 says the report may be issued by either buyer or seller.
Also called: 867 Product Transfer and Resale Report
How it works
An EDI 867 is the X12 Product Transfer and Resale Report, the electronic report a trading partner sends to say where product went: moved to another location, or sold on to an end customer.
X12's purpose statement gives the 867 three uses:
- Transfers: report information about product that has been transferred from one location to another.
- Resale: report sales of product from one or more locations to an end customer.
- Resale plus lost orders: report those sales together with demand beyond actual sales, which X12 calls lost orders.
Either side of the trade can send it. X12 says the report may be issued by either buyer or seller.
X12 lists the 867 among the transaction sets of its Supply Chain subcommittee (X12M).
EDI 867 vs EDI 852
Both sets carry sales information, so they are easy to mix up. X12 gives them different jobs:
- 852 Product Activity Data: advises a trading partner of inventory, sales, and other product activity information. X12 says product activity data enables a trading partner to plan and ship, or propose inventory replenishment quantities, for distribution centers, warehouses or retail outlets.
- 867 Product Transfer and Resale Report: reports product transferred between locations and sales to an end customer, and can add lost orders.
X12 also defines an 844 Product Transfer Account Adjustment, which can be used to transmit specific data in the form of a debit, credit, or request for credit relating to pre-authorized product transfer actions.
Example
A distributor buys 500 units of one item from a manufacturer. At month end it sends the manufacturer an 867 for the month:
- Transferred: 100 units moved from its main warehouse to a branch.
- Sold to end customers: 320 units across both locations.
- Lost orders: 40 units that customers asked for and the distributor could not supply.
Demand for the month is 320 sold plus 40 lost, so 320 + 40 = 360 units. Of the 500 units bought, 500 minus 320 = 180 have not been resold. The 100 transferred units moved between the distributor's own locations, so they appear on the report as a transfer, not as resale.
On Shopify
If the business sending the 867 sells on Shopify, an integration can read the Shopify sales and transfers the report covers through the GraphQL Admin API:
- Sales: the orders query returns a list of orders placed in the store, including data such as order status, customer, and line item details. Shopify says to use it to build reports or analyze sales performance.
- Business buyers: on a B2B order, the purchasing entity is the business entity that placed the order, including company details and purchasing relationships.
- Transfers: an InventoryTransfer tracks the movement of inventory items between locations, with origin and destination information, line items with quantities, and shipment details.
- Order history: as of October 28, 2026, Shopify's Order object documentation says only the last 60 days' worth of orders from a store are accessible from the Order object by default. To access older records, an app needs to request access to all orders.
An integration that builds 867s from Shopify reads those orders and transfers for the reporting period and maps them to the trading partner's 867 format.
How Uncap helps
Uncap's guide to EDI on Shopify for distributors puts the design rule in one sentence: "EDI terminates where inventory allocation and invoicing live, and for an ERP-run distributor that is never the storefront."
