Talk to our experts- EDI 943 (Warehouse Stock Transfer Shipment Advice)
- An EDI 943 is the X12 Warehouse Stock Transfer Shipment Advice: the transaction set a depositor, an agent of the depositor or another business party uses to advise the recipient that a transfer shipment has been made. X12 says it gives the receiving location detail information about the product being shipped to that location.
Also called: 943 Warehouse Stock Transfer Shipment Advice
How it works
An EDI 943 is the X12 Warehouse Stock Transfer Shipment Advice, the notice that tells a receiving location a transfer shipment of product has been made and is coming its way.
X12's purpose statement for the 943 names three parts:
- Sender: a depositor, an agent of the depositor, or another business party.
- Receiver: the recipient of the transfer shipment, which X12 calls the receiving location.
- Content: detail information concerning the product being shipped to that location.
The 943 has a partner set for the other end of the trip. X12's 944 Warehouse Stock Transfer Receipt Advice is used by a receiving location to advise the depositor, its agent or another business party that a transfer shipment has been received.
Where the EDI 943 sits in a stock transfer
The depositor or its agent advises the receiving location that a transfer shipment has been made, with detail on the product.
The product the 943 describes travels to the receiving location.
The receiving location advises the depositor that the transfer shipment has been received, with detail on the product received.
The 943 among warehouse transaction sets
Four of X12's warehouse transaction sets are easy to confuse. Two cover stock going out on a shipping order, and two cover a transfer shipment coming in:
- 940 Warehouse Shipping Order: the depositor or other business party advises a warehouse to make a shipment, confirm a shipment, or modify or cancel a previously sent shipping order.
- 945 Warehouse Shipping Advice: the warehouse advises the depositor or other business party that shipment was made. It is used to reconcile order quantities with shipment quantities.
- 943 Warehouse Stock Transfer Shipment Advice: a transfer shipment has been made to a receiving location.
- 944 Warehouse Stock Transfer Receipt Advice: the receiving location confirms the transfer shipment has been received.
EDI 943 vs EDI 856
Both describe a shipment, but X12 gives them different scopes. The 856 Ship Notice/Manifest lists the contents of a shipment of goods, with order information, product description, physical characteristics, packaging, marking and carrier information, and its receiver can be any organization with an interest in the shipment. The 943 is narrower: it advises a receiving location of a transfer shipment of product.
Example
A brand moves stock from its own plant to a third-party warehouse: 40 cases of one product, 35 of a second and 25 of a third. Its 943 gives the warehouse detail on each product being shipped, 40 + 35 + 25 = 100 cases in all.
The warehouse now knows what to expect before the trailer arrives. When it later sends a 944, the brand compares the cases the 944 reports as received with the 100 cases on its 943.
On Shopify
On Shopify, stock moving between locations is tracked with inventory transfers. Shopify says you can create inventory transfers to move and track inventory between your store locations, or to and from external locations such as suppliers, and that when you process a transfer, shipments are automatically created and managed for you.
- Statuses: you can move transfers to in transit, mark them as ready to ship, or mark them as transferred.
- Shipment details: each shipment can carry a tracking number, a shipping carrier and an expected arrival date.
- In the API: an InventoryTransfer tracks the movement of inventory items between locations. A transfer includes origin and destination information, line items with quantities, and shipment details. Reading it requires the read_inventory_transfers access scope.
- Apps: you can view and manage inventory transfers created by third-party apps from the Transfers page, and all transfers created by third-party apps are in the Ready to ship status.
An integration that receives a 943 for stock bound to a Shopify location can record it as a transfer, so the inbound shipment, its tracking and its expected arrival show in the admin.
