Professional Hair Color Ecommerce for Brands and Beauty Supply Distributors

Uncap builds professional hair color ecommerce on Shopify for color brands and beauty supply distributors selling to licensed stylists and salons. Wella lists its Koleston Perfect line at 140+ shades, and its US professional store mixes it 1:1 with Welloxon Perfect Creme Developer at a strength from 1.9% (6 volume) to 12% (40 volume). FDA says it cannot take action against a coal-tar hair dye over a poisonous or deleterious ingredient as long as the label includes a special cautionary statement and the product comes with skin test directions.

The challenge

Who may buy, and what goes in the order

The license gate is only the front door. The beauty and cosmetics page covers how a trade account gets approved. Cosmo Prof's FAQ says it sells to "Professionals and students in the beauty industry," who shop "with their license IDs." It also says: "Some manufacturers of professional salon products have distributor territory guidelines and our site abides by that. You will only see products you can purchase depending on the zip code of your shipping address." So the color lines a salon may buy depend on where it ships, not only on who it is.

A shade is a number, and a line is a grid of them. Wella's US professional store explains the numbering it uses across Koleston Perfect, Color Touch, Illumina Color and Shinefinity. Every color number is divided by a forward stroke: the digits before it denote the depth, and the digits after it the tonal direction, major tone first and minor tone second. For toning blondes it points to depths 7 to 10, with 7 the darkest blonde and 10 the lightest. Wella's own Koleston Perfect page lists the line at 140+ shades in one place and 170+ in its FAQ.

The developer belongs in the same order. The same store mixes Koleston Perfect 1:1 with Welloxon Perfect Creme Developer: 1.9% (6 volume) for pastel toning, 3% (10 volume) for same depth or color deposit, 6% (20 volume) for one level of lift and gray coverage, 9% (30 volume) for two levels of lift, or 12% (40 volume) for three. Its glossing and low-light services mix the same shades 1:2 with the 1.9% developer. A case of shades without the right developer is half an order.

The label and the listing

The label is part of the product. FDA says that it "cannot take action against a coal-tar hair dye on the basis that it is or contains a poisonous or deleterious ingredient that may make it harmful to consumers, as long as the label includes a special cautionary statement and the product comes with adequate directions for consumers to do a skin test before they dye their hair." That statement warns: "This product must not be used for dyeing the eyelashes or eyebrows; to do so may cause blindness."

MoCRA lists products, and the line between pro and retail matters. Under MoCRA, "A responsible person must list each marketed cosmetic product with FDA, including product ingredients, and provide any updates annually." FDA's guidance says hair coloring preparations "need to be listed, unless an exemption applies," and that one listing may cover "formulations that differ only with respect to colors." Its Cosmetics Labeling Guide says the ingredient declaration rule does not apply "to products used at professional establishments" unless they "are customarily also sold at retail."

The Uncap solution

The order: shades, developer, territory and label

Shades entered by number. A shade grid per line, ordered by depth and tone with a quantity per shade, is built during implementation from your product data. Shopify allows "up to 2,048 variants for a product" and "up to three options," so a 170-shade line can sit on one product with shade as an option, or on one product per shade. That choice is made during scoping, because it decides how search and reorder lists behave.

The developer offered with the color. Developer strengths per line, and a cart reminder showing the developer quantity your mixing ratio calls for beside the color, are built during implementation from your technical guides. The colorist decides what goes in the cart.

Territory and tier rules on the account. In Shopify B2B, "B2B catalogs determine the products and pricing your B2B customers can access." Mapping your distributor territories to catalogs, so a salon sees only the lines it may buy at its ship-to address, is configured during implementation. On the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans, Shopify allows "up to 3 active catalogs across all your B2B markets," while Plus "offers an unlimited number of catalogs and direct assignment to companies and locations." A distributor that needs more catalogs than that, one per territory and tier for example, needs Plus.

Label data on the product page. The caution statement, skin test directions, ingredient list and a professional-use-only flag are shown from your product data, configured during implementation. The same flag, also configured during implementation, hides professional-only shades from consumer accounts.

The account: salons, quotes and reports

Salon accounts and color education. In Uncap Portal, each salon gets real multi-user accounts with roles and permissions and sees its own assortment and pricing. Reorder lists and order history are a click away, and NET terms, invoices and payments sit in the portal. Budgets, approvals and limits per user let a salon owner set what each stylist can order. Portal also lets a Shopify store sell services alongside standard ecommerce products through one checkout, so a color class can sit beside the color.

Opening orders on a quote. Uncap Quotes runs configure, price, quote inside the Shopify admin. Negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks apply automatically, exceptions go to the right approver, and quotes carry validity windows and a full revision history. The approved quote becomes a Shopify order in one click.

Reaction reports tied to the order. MoCRA requires the responsible person to report serious adverse events to FDA "within 15 business days." A reaction report form on the account, tied to the order it came from, is configured during implementation.

The line between product and build, in writing. Salon accounts ship in Uncap Portal, quoting and approvals in Uncap Quotes, and ERP sync in Uncap Connect. The shade grid, developer reminders, territory catalogs, label fields and reaction reports are built or configured during implementation from your data. The scope says which is which.

Proof, labeled at its true distance. Uncap has not published a professional hair color case study. The closest beauty build is Codex Beauty, a biotech personal care brand, built on Shopify Plus with subscriptions through Recharge and international selling into Canada, Europe, Australia and Singapore. It is consumer personal care, not a salon channel. The closest shared mechanic is Kodo, which sells to both families and institutions: Uncap delivered a Shopify site that marries consumer and B2B capabilities, with catalogs and flexible payment terms, and integrated HubSpot CRM, Unleashed ERP and Shopify Plus.

Credentials. Uncap is a Shopify Platinum Partner.

Scoped before it is built. If you are moving to Shopify from another platform, the Uncap Blueprint is a $7,500 fixed-price, four-week migration plan, credited 1:1 toward implementation. You walk with everything you need to brief any agency or your in-house team.

This page sits under beauty and cosmetics, which owns license approval, salon and spa tiers, minimum order rules and the consumer store beside wholesale. This page goes one level down into hair color: shades by number, developers by ratio, territory catalogs and hair dye label data. It assumes the license approval workflow from the hub is already in place, and builds on the accounts it creates. Lash and brow tints, adhesives and academies are covered on wholesale lash and brow supplies. Bring two documents: your shade chart for one color line, and the mixing guide that says which developer goes with it. Add your distributor territory map if you have one. Together they show how many shades, ratios and territory rules the store has to carry.

07 Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How can I buy professional hair color?

Through a professional distributor or a brand's own professional store, and each seller sets its own license rules. Cosmo Prof says it sells to professionals and students in the beauty industry, who shop with their license IDs, and asks for "a photo of your professional license or business license" at sign up. Wella says licensed professionals can shop Koleston Perfect directly through the Wella Professional Store. Who may buy is the seller's policy, and the store enforces it.

Can a beauty supply distributor show different color lines in different territories?

Yes, when territories map to catalogs. Shopify B2B catalogs determine the products and pricing a B2B customer can access, and the territory mapping is configured during implementation. Below Plus, Shopify allows up to 3 active catalogs across all B2B markets. A distributor that needs one catalog per territory and tier needs Plus, which offers an unlimited number of catalogs.

Should a hair color line be one product or one product per shade on Shopify?

Either can work. Shopify allows up to 2,048 variants per product and up to three options, so a line of 170+ shades fits on one product with shade as an option. One product per shade gives each shade its own page and search result. The choice is made during scoping, based on how your colorists search and reorder.

What does a coal-tar hair dye label need under FDA's rules?

A special caution statement and adequate directions for a skin test. FDA says it cannot act against a coal-tar hair dye over a poisonous or deleterious ingredient as long as both are present. It may still act if the product lacks the caution statement or adequate skin test directions, or if an ingredient other than the coal-tar hair dye itself is harmful. The statement warns the product "must not be used for dyeing the eyelashes or eyebrows; to do so may cause blindness." On the storefront, the statement and directions are shown from your product data, configured during implementation.

Do professional-only hair color products need an ingredient list?

Not always. FDA's Cosmetics Labeling Guide says the ingredient declaration rule does not apply to products used at professional establishments, unless they are customarily also sold at retail, even if labeled "For professional use only." Separately, MoCRA product listings include product ingredients, and FDA says hair coloring preparations need to be listed unless an exemption applies. Your regulatory adviser decides the labels; the store carries the data.

How does the store help a salon order the right developer?

By offering it with the color. Developer strengths per line, and a cart reminder for the quantity the mixing ratio calls for, are built during implementation from your technical guides. Wella's US professional store, for example, mixes Koleston Perfect 1:1 with Welloxon Perfect Creme Developer for color and 1:2 with the 1.9% developer for glossing. The colorist still decides what goes in the cart.

Can a hair color brand sell professional and retail lines from one Shopify store?

Yes, separated by account and catalog rather than by platform. Professional-only shades stay hidden from consumer accounts through a professional-use-only flag configured during implementation, while retail products stay open to both. The label facts differ too: FDA's Cosmetics Labeling Guide ties the ingredient declaration rule to products customarily sold at retail. Kodo, which sells to both families and institutions, runs consumer and B2B selling on one Shopify site built by Uncap.

Which ERPs does this connect to?

Uncap publishes thirteen ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage, SAP and Syspro. Integrations run through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. For a specific ERP and the depth of sync you need, the Uncap team confirms fit directly.

What is the difference between this page and the beauty and cosmetics page?

The beauty and cosmetics page covers the professional beauty channel as a whole: license approval, salon and spa tiers, minimum order rules and a consumer store beside wholesale. This page covers hair color specifically: shades ordered by depth and tone, developers sold by strength and ratio, catalogs that change with the distributor's territory, and the FDA label rules for coal-tar hair dyes.
