Wholesale Paper Supplier Ecommerce, Sold by the Ream, the Carton and the Pallet

Uncap builds Shopify stores for paper mills, converters and wholesale paper suppliers selling copy and printer paper, text and cover stock and specialty papers to businesses, print shops, schools and resellers. The operational truth of this trade: the same sheet is sold by the ream, the carton and the pallet. Buyers compare basis weight, GSM and brightness before they order.

The same buyer expects a contract price, last month's order ready to repeat, and recycled content and certification claims they can show their own customers. Getting those right is a data problem before it is a design problem.

The challenge

Where a generic storefront breaks for wholesale paper suppliers

The operational truth of this trade: the same sheet is sold by the ream, the carton and the pallet.

Factor
Generic storefront setup
What paper mills and distributors need
Basis weight
A copy paper's 20 lb and a text paper's 60 lb are weighed on different sheets, so the two numbers do not compare.
Grade, size, basis weight with its basic size, GSM, brightness, finish, color, recycled content percentage and forest certification label become separate product attributes, built during implementation from your item master.
Spec in the title
A product title that reads "20 lb 92 bright letter" holds three filterable facts in one line of text, and a search bar cannot filter on any of them.
A buyer can narrow to letter size, 75 GSM, at least 92 bright, 30 percent postconsumer, and see only those sheets.
Ream, carton, pallet
A storefront that sells only one of those units sends the other buyers back to the phone and the email inbox.
Whether the pallet is a price break or its own pallet SKU is set during implementation from how your warehouse ships it.
Contract pricing
The same buyer expects a contract price, last month's order ready to repeat, and recycled content and certification claims they can show their own customers.
In Uncap Portal, each buyer sees their assortment and pricing, and reorder lists and order history are a click away.
Recycled content
The FTC's Green Guides say that for items partially made of recycled material, the marketer should clearly and prominently qualify the claim.
Recycled content is shown as a percentage on the product record, configured during implementation.
FSC and SFI labels
Forest labels belong to certificate holders.
The FSC or SFI label appears only where your supplier's certification data says it applies.

A pound is not a pound

Basis weight depends on the sheet it is measured on. The U.S. Government Publishing Office's Government Paper Specification Standards, which GPO issues for federal departments and agencies, list the "BASIC SIZES FOR REAMS OF 500 SHEETS": bond and writing papers at 17 by 22 inches, book, text and offset at 25 by 38 inches, cover at 20 by 26 inches and index at 25.5 by 30.5 inches. A copy paper's 20 lb and a text paper's 60 lb are weighed on different sheets, so the two numbers do not compare. GPO's plain copier grade, JCP O-65, gives its "Basis weight: 17 by 22 inches, 500 sheets (pounds) 20."

Show GSM next to pounds. One mill's sell sheet for a 20 lb copy paper prints "75GSM" next to the basis weight. Because pound weights change meaning with the basic size, a catalog that only stores "20 lb" leaves the buyer to work out how a copy sheet compares with a text or cover stock.

Brightness has a scale too. The same sell sheet says "U.S. brightness based on TAPPI scale," and GPO's standards measure brightness by TAPPI method T-452. For JCP O-65, GPO says "The white paper shall target not less than 88% or as specified." A product title that reads "20 lb 92 bright letter" holds three filterable facts in one line of text, and a search bar cannot filter on any of them.

One sheet, four cartons

The carton decides the pallet. As one example, that mill's sell sheet lists one 20 lb letter paper in 10, 8, 5 and 3 ream cartons, at 40, 48, 80 and 112 cartons per pallet, with 500 sheets in each ream. That works out to 400, 384, 400 and 336 reams per pallet. On the same sheet, legal size, 8.5 by 14 inches, ships in 10 ream cartons at 30 cartons per pallet, or 300 reams. Ledger, 11 by 17 inches, comes in 5 ream cartons on that sheet. Even within one mill's line, "a pallet of copy paper" is not one number.

Every pack size is its own SKU. One account orders by the pallet, another by the carton, another by the ream. A storefront that sells only one of those units sends the other buyers back to the phone and the email inbox.

Recycled and certified claims have rules

Agency buyers ask for recovered fiber. EPA's Comprehensive Procurement Guideline program, authorized under Section 6002 of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, says that once a product is designated, "procuring agencies are required to purchase it with the highest recovered material content level practicable." EPA's recommendation for reprographic paper, which includes high-speed copier paper and bond paper, is 30 percent postconsumer fiber, and EPA notes that "Postconsumer fiber does not include newsstand returns or printer's overruns." GPO's JCP O-65 copier grade calls for "Not less than 30% post-consumer fiber."

The percentage belongs on the product. The FTC's Green Guides say that for items partially made of recycled material, "the marketer should clearly and prominently qualify the claim to avoid deception about the amount or percentage, by weight, of recycled content."

Forest labels belong to certificate holders. FSC has three labels: FSC 100%, FSC Recycled and FSC Mix. FSC says chain of custody certification is "designed for companies that produce and distribute forest-based products," including those that "Sell FSC-certified products with FSC claims on sales documents." SFI says "Only organizations with a valid SFI certificate issued by an accredited certification body may apply the on-product labels." A distributor's storefront shows the label the mill or the certificate holder is entitled to, not one it guesses.

The Uncap solution

Find the paper by its spec

Spec attributes, not product titles. Grade, size, basis weight with its basic size, GSM, brightness, finish, color, recycled content percentage and forest certification label become separate product attributes, built during implementation from your item master. Shopify says "Custom filters are based on the product options, metafields, or metaobjects used in your store," with "a maximum of 25 filters for your store." A buyer can narrow to letter size, 75 GSM, at least 92 bright, 30 percent postconsumer, and see only those sheets.

A data model that fits Shopify's limits. Shopify says "You can create up to 2,048 variants for a product" and "Each product can have up to three options." A paper line with size, basis weight, color and pack size has four dimensions, so which become options and which become separate products is decided during implementation, before a single SKU is loaded.

Claims shown as the certificate holder states them. Recycled content is shown as a percentage on the product record, and the FSC or SFI label appears only where your supplier's certification data says it applies, configured during implementation. Uncap does not certify paper or audit fiber content. The storefront shows what your mills and your certificates say.

Sell the ream, the carton and the pallet

Carton increments enforced at checkout. Shopify B2B quantity rules let you sell in set batches, and Shopify's own example fits a 10 ream carton: "if your products are boxed in multiples of 10, then you can set your increment rule to 10." Quantity rules "are re-validated in checkout." Volume pricing "lets you offer additional price breaks to customers when they purchase larger quantities," with up to 10 price breaks per product. Whether the pallet is a price break or its own pallet SKU is set during implementation from how your warehouse ships it.

Contract pricing by account. "B2B catalogs determine the products and pricing your B2B customers can access." Shopify B2B is available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Shopify Plus plans. On Basic, Grow and Advanced "you can assign up to 3 active catalogs across all your B2B markets," and "The Shopify Plus plan offers an unlimited number of catalogs and direct assignment to companies and locations." "Payment terms define how long a company has to pay for an order."

Mill-direct and truckload quotes in Uncap Quotes. Uncap Quotes applies negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks automatically, sends exceptions to the right approver and generates clean, shareable quote documents. Quotes carry validity windows and a full revision history, and approved quotes turn straight into Shopify orders. The paper-specific quote fields, such as custom sizes or mill-direct quantities, are built during implementation.

Reorders and the ERP

Standing orders in Uncap Portal. In Uncap Portal, each buyer sees their assortment and pricing, and reorder lists and order history are a click away. Accounts are real multi-user accounts with roles and permissions, with budgets, approvals and limits per user, so a school's office staff can order inside a limit someone else sets. NET terms, invoices and payments sit in the portal.

The ERP stays the system of record. Uncap Connect is the real-time data layer between Shopify and your ERP: inventory, orders, customers and pricing move the moment they change, not in an overnight batch. It starts at $8,000 for onboarding and then a flat $390 per month. Field-level rules decide which system wins, every time, and failed sync events are isolated, surfaced in a live console and replayable, so nothing is silently dropped. Connect has native support for Shopify B2B companies, locations, catalogs, price lists and payment terms. Integration can also run as a managed iPaaS integration. For distributors on Epicor Prophet 21, Infor SX.e or NetSuite, those pages cover the ERP side.

Proof, labeled at its true distance. Uncap has not published a paper distribution case study. The closest published build is SignWarehouse, a U.S.-based company that specializes in selling equipment, materials and tools for sign making, custom graphics and garment printing, where Uncap delivered a complete overhaul with Shopify B2B enablement and custom apps. It is not a paper distributor; the Shopify B2B enablement is the transferable part.

Spec attributes, the pack size data model, the pallet setup and the certification display are built during implementation from your data. The scope says which is which.

Credentials you can check. Uncap is a Shopify Platinum Partner.

Scoped before it is built. The Uncap Blueprint is a $7,500 fixed-price, 4-week Shopify migration plan. It covers solution architecture, a data migration taxonomy, an ERP integration audit, UX and flow prototyping and a replatforming risk register, and the fee is credited 1:1 toward implementation. For a paper distributor, that architecture work can cover the spec attribute model, the ream, carton and pallet structure and the ERP integration. You walk with everything you need to brief any agency or your in-house team.

This page sits under office and business products ecommerce, which covers the wider office supply catalog. This page goes down to the sheet itself: basis weight and its basic size, GSM, brightness, the carton and the pallet. For paper converted into shipping cartons, see corrugated and shipping boxes and packaging and shipping supplies. Distributors that also carry towels and tissue will find standing orders and route days on janitorial and sanitation. 07 Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What does a wholesale paper supplier sell?

A wholesale paper supplier sells printing and writing papers by the ream, carton and pallet to businesses, print shops, schools and resellers. EPA describes printing and writing papers as "one of the largest categories of paper and paper products," with examples including "copier paper, stationery, computer printout, offset paper and note pads." EPA lists text and cover paper as its own grade, next to copier paper.

What does 20 lb paper mean?

It is the basis weight: the weight in pounds of 500 sheets at the grade's basic size. For bond and writing papers, including copy paper, GPO's federal paper standards set that basic size at 17 by 22 inches. Text papers are weighed at 25 by 38 inches and cover at 20 by 26 inches, so pound weights only compare within one grade. One mill's sell sheet lists its 20 lb copy paper as 75 GSM.

How many reams are in a pallet of copy paper?

It depends on the carton. As one example, one mill's sell sheet lists the same 20 lb letter paper in 10 ream cartons at 40 per pallet (400 reams), 8 ream cartons at 48 per pallet (384 reams), 5 ream cartons at 80 per pallet (400 reams) and 3 ream cartons at 112 per pallet (336 reams). Its legal size paper ships 30 cartons of 10 reams per pallet, or 300 reams. Each ream holds 500 sheets.

What brightness should copy paper have?

In GPO's federal paper standards, the plain copier grade JCP O-65 says "The white paper shall target not less than 88% or as specified." GPO measures brightness by TAPPI method T-452, and one mill's sell sheet lists its copy paper at 92 brightness, noting "U.S. brightness based on TAPPI scale." On a paper distributor's storefront, brightness works best as a filter, not as words in the product title.

How much recycled content do government paper specifications call for?

Under EPA's Comprehensive Procurement Guideline program, EPA recommends that procuring agencies set minimum content standards, and for reprographic paper, including high-speed copier paper and bond paper, EPA's recommended level is 30 percent postconsumer fiber. GPO's federal JCP O-65 copier grade calls for "Not less than 30% post-consumer fiber." The FTC's Green Guides say a partly recycled product's claim should be qualified by the percentage, by weight, of recycled content.

Can a paper distributor show FSC or SFI labels on its website?

Only within each certifier's rules. FSC says chain of custody certification is designed for companies that "Label finished goods as FSC certified" or "Sell FSC-certified products with FSC claims on sales documents," and that most retailers that do not manufacture finished goods do not need it, saying a promotional license is a better fit for them. SFI says only organizations with a valid SFI certificate, authorized by its Office of Label Use and Licensing, may apply its on-product labels. The storefront should show what your certification data supports.

Can Shopify sell paper only by the carton?

Yes. Shopify B2B quantity rules include increment rules, and Shopify's own example is "if your products are boxed in multiples of 10, then you can set your increment rule to 10," which fits a 10 ream carton sold by the ream. Minimum quantity rules "let you define the fewest number of an item that can be purchased at one time." Volume pricing adds up to 10 price breaks per product for larger orders.

Which ERPs does this connect to?

Uncap publishes thirteen ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage, SAP and Syspro. Integration pages for distribution ERPs include Epicor Prophet 21 and Infor SX.e. Integrations run through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. For a specific ERP and the depth of sync you need, the Uncap team confirms fit directly.

What is the difference between this page and the office and business products page?

The office and business products page covers the wider office supply catalog that dealers and distributors sell. This page covers paper itself: basis weight measured on its basic size, GSM and brightness as filters, the ream, carton and pallet as separate units, contract catalogs, and recycled content and forest certification claims shown the way EPA, the FTC, FSC and SFI describe them.
