Sell Wholesale Backpacks by the Case, the Season and the Logo

Uncap builds Shopify stores for bag and backpack brands and wholesalers selling wholesale backpacks to schools, nonprofits, resellers and promotional buyers. Those buyers want the case, the price per unit and often a logo, and search demand peaks in summer. A backpack designed or intended primarily for children 12 and younger is a children's product under federal law.

The challenge

Where a generic storefront breaks for backpack sellers

If your backpacks are packed and shipped in case packs, the buyer thinks in bags and the warehouse thinks in cases.

Factor
Generic storefront setup
What backpack brands and wholesalers need
Case packs
A store that sells single units, or shows only a case price, makes either the buyer or the warehouse do the math.
A bag packed 24 to a case gets an increment of 24, and quantity rules are re-validated in checkout, so a cart cannot slip through with 30.
Unit price breaks
When price breaks live in a PDF or a rep's head, every large order starts as an email.
Volume pricing offers up to 10 price breaks per product, and each break lands on a full case.
The summer peak
A store that needs a rep for every order hits its ceiling exactly when demand peaks.
Uncap Portal gives buyers reorder lists and order history a click away, and Uncap Connect moves inventory the moment it changes.
Tax-exempt buyers
Each school or charity's tax status gets checked by hand on every order.
Each company location can have its own tax ID and tax exemptions, with certificate collection built during implementation.
Logo orders
An order with artwork, a decoration method and a run quantity does not fit in a cart line.
Uncap Quotes handles logo orders, with the decoration fields built during implementation as the quote's configuration rules.
Children's backpacks
A backpack designed or intended primarily for children 12 and younger is a children's product, which brings third-party testing, a Children's Product Certificate and tracking labels.
A children's product flag and each SKU's certificate link sit on the product record, built during implementation from your compliance files.

The case, the unit price and the summer

When the bag ships by the case. If your backpacks are packed and shipped in case packs, the buyer thinks in bags and the warehouse thinks in cases. A store that sells single units, or shows only a case price, makes either the buyer or the warehouse do the math.

The price has to move with the quantity. A school ordering 40 bags and a nonprofit ordering 2,000 of the same bag are not paying the same unit price, and both expect to see that before they call. When price breaks live in a PDF or a rep's head, every large order starts as an email.

Demand arrives in one season. Google Ads data we pulled in October 2026 puts US searches for "wholesale backpacks" at 390 to 720 a month from October 2025 through May 2026. Then it climbs to 1,600 in June, 4,400 in July and 2,400 in August, and falls back to 480 in September. Searches for "bulk backpacks" reach 12,100 in July. Close to two thirds of the year's searches for the term land in those three months, and a store that needs a rep for every order hits its ceiling exactly when demand peaks.

Four kinds of buyer, four sets of rules

Schools and nonprofits can buy tax exempt. A district, a school or a charity running a donation drive may hold a tax exemption, and the exemption belongs to that buyer, not to the bag. Each one needs its tax status set up once, not checked by hand on every order.

Resellers buy to resell. A retail store buys an assortment for its own shelves and may pay on terms. Shopify's own definition is plain: "Payment terms define how long a company has to pay for an order." A reseller on terms and a school paying by card should not see the same checkout.

Promotional buyers want their logo. A company buying 500 bags for an event wants its logo printed or embroidered, a proof before production and a firm quote. That order has artwork, a decoration method and a run quantity, and none of that fits in a cart line.

When a backpack is a children's product

The bag can be a children's product. CPSC says "The law defines a \"children's product\" as a consumer product designed or intended primarily for children 12 years of age or younger." Backpacks are named. CPSC lists "a backpack" among items that "would likely be considered children's products, if the product met the four criteria above," and adds that for a backpack "the sizing of the product and the themes and decorations depicted on the products would likely play a part in determining whether the product is a children's product."

A children's product brings testing and a certificate. In CPSC's words, "Children's products are required to undergo third-party testing and to have a written Children's Product Certificate (CPC) demonstrating compliance." That certificate is "based on test results from a third-party, CPSC-accepted laboratory," and it is issued by the domestic manufacturer or importer. Children's products also carry tracking labels, "permanently affixed to the product and its packaging, to the extent practicable," that identify the manufacturer, importer or private labeler, the location and date of production, and batch or run details.

Lead limits reach the zipper pull. Under CPSC's total lead content rule, children's products "that contain more than 100 ppm lead in an accessible component" are a banned hazardous substance. CPSC's guide for promotional products names this trade directly: the limits cover "metal or plastic pieces, such as zipper pulls on items like backpacks or sweatshirts." CPSC's lead in paint rule, 16 C.F.R. part 1303, also bans children's products that use paint or a similar surface coating containing 0.009% or more lead by weight.

A logo can change the answer. The same guide says a decoration "designed or intended primarily to appeal to a child 12 years of age or younger" can "transform" a product into a children's product. It adds that "If you are screen printing children’s items, the screen print inks must be third party tested." For promotional orders, CPSC says the distributor, the supplier, or both "may be responsible, depending upon the business, legal, and practical arrangements of decorating, producing, and selling the finished children’s product."

Fiber labels are a different question. The FTC's guide to the Textile and Wool Acts lists "Knapsacks and backpacks" among the products for which "Labeling is not required." For handbags and luggage made of leather or imitation leather, the FTC points to its separate leather guides at 16 C.F.R. Part 24.

The Uncap solution

Cases, price breaks and buyer accounts

The case enforced at checkout. Shopify B2B runs on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Shopify Plus plans, and its catalogs carry quantity rules. Shopify's example fits a backpack case: "if your products are boxed in multiples of 10, then you can set your increment rule to 10 so customers must purchase 10, 20, 30, products at a time." A bag packed 24 to a case gets an increment of 24, and a minimum rule sets the fewest a buyer can order. Quantity rules "are re-validated in checkout," so a cart cannot slip through with 30.

Unit prices that fall with quantity. Volume pricing "lets you offer additional price breaks to customers when they purchase larger quantities of a product in a single order," with up to 10 price breaks per product, applied to each variant. Price break quantities must be a multiple of the increment, so every break lands on a full case. On the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans you can assign up to 3 active catalogs across all your B2B markets, which is enough for a school price list, a reseller price list and a nonprofit price list. On Shopify Plus, B2B market catalogs are unlimited.

Tax status set once, on the account. In Shopify B2B, each company location "can have its own tax ID, tax exemptions, shipping address, billing address," and a location can be set to collect tax unless exemptions apply. So a school district's three campuses can each carry their own status. Collecting the exemption certificate when an account applies, and storing it with the account, is built during implementation.

Terms for the buyers who earn them. Shopify payment terms include net periods such as net 30 or net 60. Deposits are available only on the Shopify Plus plan. If you prefer to review orders before they're finalized, Shopify lets B2B orders be submitted as drafts.

Self-serve reorders in Uncap Portal. Uncap Portal gives each buyer real multi-user accounts with roles and permissions, so a school's office manager and its principal can order from one account. Budgets, approvals and limits per user keep spending inside a grant or a PTA budget. Each buyer sees their assortment and pricing, reorder lists and order history are a click away, and NET terms, invoices and payments sit in the portal.

Logo orders and compliance records

Logo orders through Uncap Quotes. Uncap Quotes applies negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks automatically, sends exceptions to the right approver and generates clean, shareable quote documents. Quotes carry validity windows and a full revision history, and approved quotes turn straight into Shopify orders. The decoration fields (method, artwork, imprint colors and run quantity) are built during implementation as the quote's configuration rules. For the decoration supply side of the trade, see blank apparel and decorating supplies.

The certificate on the product record. Flagging which SKUs are children's products, linking each one's Children's Product Certificate and showing it to the buyers who ask, is built during implementation from your compliance files. A logo quote can carry the same flag, so a children's design is routed to a person before it is approved. Uncap does not test, certify or give legal advice on products. The store shows what your testing lab and your importer of record have already done.

Keep the warehouse and the storefront in sync

The ERP stays the system of record. Uncap Connect is the real-time data layer between Shopify and your ERP: inventory, orders, customers and pricing move the moment they change, not in an overnight batch. It starts at $8,000 for onboarding and then a flat $390 per month. Field-level rules decide which system wins, every time, and failed sync events are isolated, surfaced in the console and replayable, so nothing is silently dropped. Connect has native support for Shopify B2B companies, locations, catalogs, price lists and payment terms. Integration can also run as a managed iPaaS integration. In July, that is the difference between selling the case you have and the case you sold yesterday.

Why Uncap

The line between product and build, in writing. Quoting and approvals ship in Uncap Quotes, trade accounts and reorders in Uncap Portal, and ERP sync in Uncap Connect. Case pack rules, price breaks and tax settings are Shopify B2B configuration. Decoration fields, certificate collection and children's product records are built during implementation from your data. The scope says which is which.

Credentials you can check. Uncap is a Shopify Platinum Partner.

Scoped before it is built. The Uncap Blueprint is a $7,500 fixed-price, 4-week Shopify migration plan. It covers solution architecture, a data migration taxonomy, an ERP integration audit, UX and flow prototyping and a replatforming risk register, and the fee is credited 1:1 toward implementation. For a backpack brand or wholesaler, that architecture work can cover the case and price model, the buyer account types, the logo quote fields and the ERP integration. You walk with everything you need to brief any agency or your in-house team.

07 Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find a wholesale backpack supplier?

Wholesale backpacks and bags come from bag brands, manufacturers and wholesalers, which can sell by the case to schools, nonprofits, resellers and promotional buyers. For a brand or wholesaler, the real question is whether its own store lets those buyers order the case, see the price break and pay the way they need to.

How are wholesale backpacks priced?

Each seller sets its own prices. On a Shopify B2B store you can price by the bag, sell by the case and keep the unit price falling as quantity rises. Volume pricing "lets you offer additional price breaks to customers when they purchase larger quantities of a product in a single order," with up to 10 price breaks per product. Break quantities must be a multiple of the increment rule, so each break lands on a full case. Logo orders at a specific run quantity go through Uncap Quotes instead.

Is a backpack a children's product?

It can be. CPSC defines a children's product as one "designed or intended primarily for children 12 years of age or younger," and says the sizing of a backpack and the themes and decorations on it "would likely play a part in determining whether the product is a children's product." Only a backpack designed or intended primarily for children 12 and younger is a children's product. A plain bag sized and marketed for adults is a general use product; the same bag with a cartoon print sold to elementary schools may not be.

What does a children's backpack need before it is sold?

CPSC says children's products "are required to undergo third-party testing and to have a written Children's Product Certificate (CPC) demonstrating compliance," based on results from a CPSC-accepted lab. The domestic manufacturer or importer issues the certificate. The product and its packaging carry tracking labels, to the extent practicable, with the maker, place and date of production and batch details. A children's product with more than 100 ppm lead in an accessible component, such as a metal or plastic zipper pull, is banned.

Does adding a logo change the rules?

It can. CPSC's guide for promotional products says a decoration "designed or intended primarily to appeal to a child 12 years of age or younger" can turn a general use product into a children's product, and that screen print inks on children's items "must be third party tested." Depending on how decorating and selling are arranged, the distributor, the supplier or both may be responsible. A logo quote that flags children's designs for review is built during implementation.

Do backpacks need a fiber content label?

Not under the FTC's textile rules. The FTC's guide to the Textile and Wool Acts lists "Knapsacks and backpacks" among products for which "Labeling is not required." For handbags and luggage made of leather or imitation leather, the FTC points to its Guides for Select Leather and Imitation Leather Products, 16 C.F.R. Part 24. Children's product rules from CPSC are a separate question.

Can schools and nonprofits buy tax exempt on Shopify?

Yes. In Shopify B2B, each company location can have its own tax ID and tax exemptions, and a location can be set to collect tax unless exemptions apply. A school district with several campuses can carry each one's status. Shopify's help center covers selecting the exemption in the admin; collecting the buyer's exemption certificate and keeping it with the account is built during implementation.

Which ERPs does this connect to?

Uncap publishes thirteen ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage, SAP and Syspro. If you run NetSuite, Business Central or Cin7, start with those integration pages. Integrations run through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. For a specific ERP and the depth of sync you need, the Uncap team confirms fit directly.

What is the difference between this page and the fashion and branded apparel page?

The fashion and branded apparel page covers seasonal wholesale to retail buyers: linesheets, delivery windows, size runs, prepacks and preorders with cancel dates. This page covers bags and backpacks sold by the case to schools, nonprofits, resellers and promotional buyers: case packs, unit price breaks, the back-to-school peak, logo quotes, tax-exempt accounts and the CPSC rules for children's backpacks.
