Wholesale Rugs for the Trade, Ordered by Size, Shape and Construction

Uncap builds wholesale rugs B2B ecommerce on Shopify for area rug manufacturers, importers and wholesalers selling to furniture and home retailers, interior designers and hospitality buyers. Trade buyers sign in, see their own pricing, order a design in the size and shape the room needs, ask for a sample and ship to their floor or to their customer. The truth of this trade: one design is many products. Its size decides which federal flammability standard applies, and its fiber and backing decide how fiber content is disclosed.

The challenge

Where a generic storefront breaks for wholesale rugs

One design is many products, and its size, fiber and backing decide what each one has to disclose.

Factor
The problem
What the build does
Sizes and shapes
Add shapes and colorways, and one design becomes a grid.
Each design is one Shopify product with size, shape and color as its three options.
Flammability by size
A 2' x 3' meets the 16 CFR 1631 definition and an 8' x 10' the 16 CFR 1630 definition.
The applicable CPSC standard, test result and label status carried on each size variant, configured during implementation.
Fiber and construction
For a rug with an exempted backing, the fiber disclosure must relate only to the face, pile, or outer surface.
Pile fiber, backing, construction and country of origin as separate fields, configured during implementation.
Trade pricing
Trade pricing stays behind the login.
Each buyer sees their assortment and pricing through Uncap Portal, with B2B catalogs on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus.
Samples and pads
Samples, drop ship and freight each run on their own rule.
Sample caps on Shopify quantity rules, and pads matched by size and priced by their own rule, configured during implementation.
Drop ship and freight

Sizes and flammability standards

One design, many sellable products. Well Woven's size guide for retailers lists 64 size options across all collections in its catalog, runners and broadloom rolls among them. Add shapes and colorways, and one design becomes a grid.

Size decides which flammability standard applies. CPSC's standard for small carpets and rugs, FF 2-70 at 16 CFR 1631, defines a small carpet as one that "has no dimension greater than 1.83 m. (6 ft.)" and an area not greater than 24 square feet. The standard for carpets and rugs, FF 1-70 at 16 CFR 1630, defines a carpet as one with "one dimension greater than 1.83 m. (6 ft.)" and a surface area greater than 24 square feet. So a 2' x 3' meets the first definition and an 8' x 10' the second.

A small rug that fails carries a permanent warning. Under 16 CFR 1631.34, a small rug that does not meet the acceptance criterion must carry a permanent label stating: "FLAMMABLE (FAILS U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE STANDARD FF 2-70): SHOULD NOT BE USED NEAR SOURCES OF IGNITION." The section says the statement shall also appear conspicuously in advertisements offering those rugs "through direct mail, telephone solicitation, or under any other circumstances where the consumer, in the ordinary course of dealing, will not have an opportunity to inspect the label before receiving the merchandise." Samples and swatches used to sell them must be labeled with the same information. Under both standards, a rug that has had a fire-retardant treatment, or is made of treated fibers, must be labeled with the letter "T".

Fiber disclosure, trade terms and shipping

Construction words count as fiber claims. The FTC's textile rules list "(8) Floor coverings" among the products subject to the Act and its rules, unless excluded. For a rug with an exempted backing, the fiber disclosure must "indicate that it relates only to the face, pile, or outer surface of the floor covering and not to the backing, filling, or padding." In Internet ads, a term "descriptive of a method of manufacture, construction, or weave" that by custom also signals a fiber is "deemed to be an implication of fiber content."

Trade pricing stays behind the login. Well Woven says "wwoven.com is trade-only." GRP Rugs states: "Wholesale accounts require business verification." Lahome says resale on third-party marketplaces "is not permitted without written authorization."

Samples, drop ship and freight each run on their own rule. Lahome's approved members get one free 2' x 3' sample. Well Woven's FAQ offers drop shipping "for qualified wholesale accounts," in plain packaging, through "parcel and LTL carriers," and says "cut-to-order and custom-finished pieces carry their own lead time."

The Uncap solution

Catalog, compliance data and trade pricing

A design is the product. Size, shape and color are its options. Each design is one Shopify product with size, shape and color as its three options. Attributes that change by size, such as the applicable CPSC standard, the test result and any "T" or cautionary label, sit on each size variant, configured during implementation. Uncap does not decide a product's compliance. Your compliance team does, and the catalog carries the answer.

Fiber, construction and origin as fields. Pile fiber, backing, construction and country of origin are separate fields on the product record, configured during implementation, so pile and backing never share one line.

A trade-only catalog. Shopify B2B runs on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. Below Plus, you can assign up to 3 active catalogs across all your B2B markets. In Uncap Portal, each buyer sees their assortment and pricing, with NET terms, invoices and payments in the portal. Trade applications, business verification and marketplace authorization flags are configured during implementation.

Samples and pads by their own rules. Shopify B2B quantity rules set a minimum, maximum and increment, so a sample item can carry a maximum. A pad matched to the rug's size and priced by its own rule is configured during implementation.

Quotes, shipping, ERP and proof

Projects quoted, not carted. For a hotel floor or a designer's custom size, Uncap Quotes runs the configure, price, quote workflow inside the Shopify admin. Exceptions go to the right approver, and quotes carry validity windows and a full revision history. Custom size, edge finishing and lead time rules are built during implementation. The approved quote becomes a Shopify order in one click.

Drop ship and freight by the line. Ship-to-customer orders with a plain packaging flag, parcel or LTL by each variant's weight and dimensions, and a lead time per line are built during implementation.

The ERP stays the system of record. Uncap Connect keeps pricing, inventory, customer data and orders in real-time, two-way sync, embedded inside Shopify with no separate middleware on the Connect route. Integrations run through an owned Uncap Connect app or a managed iPaaS integration.

Proof, at its true distance. Uncap has not published a rug case study. The closest build is Vermont Woods Studios, a handmade furniture maker Uncap moved to Shopify Plus. Its founder: "We had thousands of products, pages, categories, blogs, etc." It shares a large home furnishings catalog, not the rug mechanics.

Key features

Design, size, shape and color. One product per design, with size, shape and color as its three options, inside Shopify's 2,048 variant limit.

Flammability data per size. The applicable CPSC standard, test result and label status carried on each size variant, configured during implementation.

Fiber and origin fields. Pile fiber, backing, construction and country of origin as separate fields, configured during implementation.

Trade-only pricing. Each buyer sees their assortment and pricing through Uncap Portal, with B2B catalogs on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus.

Trade approval. Application, business verification and marketplace authorization flags, configured during implementation.

Samples and pads. Sample caps on Shopify quantity rules, and pads matched by size and priced by their own rule, configured during implementation.

Project and custom-size quotes. Configure, price, quote inside the Shopify admin through Uncap Quotes, with custom size and finishing rules built during implementation.

Drop ship, LTL and lead time by line. Ship-to-customer orders, plain packaging, freight mode by size and per-line lead times, built during implementation.

Multi-user trade accounts. Real multi-user accounts with roles and permissions, so a store owner and a buyer on the floor both order, through Uncap Portal.

ERP sync, Connect or managed iPaaS. Pricing, inventory, customers and orders kept current between Shopify and the ERP, with customer-specific pricing, credit terms and tax rules synced through Uncap Connect.

Why Uncap

The line between product and build, in writing. Account pricing, multi-user accounts, NET terms, quoting, approvals and ERP sync ship in Uncap Portal, Uncap Quotes and Uncap Connect. The variant model, flammability and fiber fields, trade approval, sample and pad rules, drop ship and freight logic are built or configured during implementation from your data. The scope says which is which.

Your data, modeled once. Most of a rug build is data you already keep: a size grid, test records, fiber and origin details, and trade terms. Uncap models that data in Shopify during implementation, so the trade product page, the quote and the order all read the same record.

Credentials you can check. Uncap is a Shopify Platinum Partner.

Scoped before it is built. The Uncap Blueprint is a $7,500 fixed-price, 4-week Shopify migration plan covering architecture, data taxonomy, an SEO roadmap, an ERP audit and a risk register. The cost is credited 1:1 toward implementation. For a rug supplier, that data taxonomy work can cover your size grid, fiber fields and flammability records. You walk with everything you need to brief any agency or your in-house team.

This page sits under home goods ecommerce, which covers finished goods sold in case packs and assortments, EDI from retail accounts, retailer catalogs and drop ship. This page goes one level down, into rugs sold by size, construction and fiber. Broadloom sold by the cut and carpet tile by the carton are covered on broadloom carpet and carpet tile. Made-to-order furniture with project quoting sits on furniture and contract furnishing. Made-to-measure blinds and shades sit on window treatments, and outdoor furniture written at market on wholesale outdoor furniture. For opening orders and reorder rules, see wholesale order minimums, case packs and MOQs on Shopify. For freight terms, see the glossary entry on LTL freight. For the ERP side, see the Business Central integration, the Sage 100 integration, or all ERP integrations.

07 Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify handle area rug sizes, shapes and colors on one product?

Yes, within Shopify's limits. Each product can have up to three options and up to 2,048 variants, so size, shape and color fit on one product per design. A fourth attribute that varies, such as backing, can be carried as a product field or as a separate product. On this build, the variant model and size-level data are configured during implementation from your catalog.

Which flammability standard applies to an area rug?

It depends on the rug's size. Under CPSC's rules, a small carpet or rug has no dimension greater than 6 feet and an area not greater than 24 square feet, and falls under 16 CFR 1631. A rug with one dimension greater than 6 feet and a surface area greater than 24 square feet falls under 16 CFR 1630. Both standards say a one of a kind rug, such as an antique, an Oriental or a hide, may be excluded from testing under conditions set by the CPSC. One design can span both standards, so the standard is tracked per size variant.

What has to appear when a small rug fails the flammability test?

Under 16 CFR 1631.34, a small rug that does not meet the acceptance criterion must carry a permanent label reading "FLAMMABLE (FAILS U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE STANDARD FF 2-70): SHOULD NOT BE USED NEAR SOURCES OF IGNITION." The section says the statement shall also appear conspicuously in advertisements offering those rugs "through direct mail, telephone solicitation, or under any other circumstances where the consumer, in the ordinary course of dealing, will not have an opportunity to inspect the label before receiving the merchandise." Whether a given listing is such an advertisement is for your compliance team to decide. On this build, the label status is a field on the size variant, configured during implementation.

How should fiber content be shown for a rug with a backing?

For floor coverings with exempted backings, the FTC's rule says the disclosure must "indicate that it relates only to the face, pile, or outer surface of the floor covering and not to the backing, filling, or padding." One of its examples reads "100% Cotton Pile." The rules define the backing as the part "to which the pile, face, or outer surface is woven, tufted, hooked, knitted, or otherwise attached." Well Woven describes one of its lines as "Thick high-low pile, jute back," naming the pile and the backing separately. On this build, pile fiber and backing are separate fields, configured during implementation, so the listing states the face fiber on its own.

How do you keep wholesale rug prices hidden from consumers?

Put trade pricing in B2B catalogs that only approved accounts see. Shopify B2B runs on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, with up to 3 active catalogs across all B2B markets below Plus. On Shopify Plus, catalogs can also be assigned directly to specific companies and company locations; direct catalog assignment isn't available on Basic, Grow or Advanced. In Uncap Portal, each buyer sees their assortment and pricing. Trade applications and business verification are configured during implementation.

Can retailers order samples and have rugs drop shipped to their customers?

Yes, with the rules built for your program. Shopify B2B quantity rules set a minimum, maximum and increment per item, which can cap samples. Ship-to-customer orders, a plain packaging flag and per-account drop ship eligibility are built during implementation, as are parcel or LTL selection by rug size and a lead time per line.

What do the FTC textile rules say about country of origin in rug advertising?

Under 16 CFR 303.34, when a textile fiber product is advertised in a mail order catalog or mail order promotional material, its description must contain "a clear and conspicuous statement that the product was either made in U.S.A., imported, or both." The rules define that material as materials "disseminated to ultimate consumers in print or by electronic means, other than by broadcast," that solicit them to buy "without examining the actual product purchased." Whether a given listing meets that definition is for your compliance team to decide. On this build, country of origin is a field on the product record, configured during implementation.

Which ERPs does this connect to?

Uncap publishes thirteen ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage, SAP and Syspro. The home goods page names Dynamics 365 Business Central, Sage 100, Dynamics NAV and Sage Intacct as the ones that come up most for home goods and housewares brands. Integrations run through an owned Uncap Connect app or a managed iPaaS integration, and the Uncap team confirms fit for your ERP.

What is the difference between this page and the home goods page?

The home goods page covers finished goods sold in case packs and assortments, where the hard parts are EDI, retailer compliance and drop ship. This page covers area rugs, where one design is many sizes and shapes, size decides the flammability standard, and fiber and construction shape the listing. A rug supplier that also sells to big box accounts by EDI will find that side on the home goods page.
