Sell the Replacement Water Heater From the Old Unit's Rating Plate

Uncap builds water heater and boiler B2B ecommerce on Shopify for manufacturers and plumbing and HVAC distributors selling tank, tankless and heat pump water heaters, commercial water heaters and residential and light commercial boilers to plumbers, HVAC contractors and service companies. This trade sells the whole unit, and a replacement order starts from the one that failed. The contractor has the old rating plate, a customer with no hot water, and a vent, a gas line and a closet the new unit has to fit. The catalog carries federal test ratings, standards tied to the date of manufacture and, in Southern California, an emission rule that turns on the building.

The challenge

Where a generic storefront breaks for water heaters and boilers

This trade sells the whole unit, and a replacement order starts from the one that failed.

Factor
Generic storefront setup
What water heater and boiler sellers need
Replacement match
A model number search returns the dead unit's page, if anything, not the current units that replace it.
The old unit's model number, or its fuel, venting, capacity and input, returns the current units that fit the same space, built during implementation.
Test ratings
A filter that knows only gallons and fuel cannot tell apart two same-size tanks tested under different draw patterns.
First-hour rating or Maximum GPM, uniform energy factor, draw pattern, rated storage volume, input, venting type and dimensions as attributes, configured during implementation.
Manufacture date
A catalog without manufacture dates cannot tell a buyer which efficiency table a unit was built to.
Where your ERP records manufacture dates for units on hand, the date shows on the product and the order, built during implementation.
South Coast AQMD
In Southern California, the building changes the answer, and some units must display a label for existing buildings only.
For a ship-to inside the district, a step that records new or existing building and shows the label status, built during implementation as a record, not a compliance decision.
Emergency rental
After the compliance date, an emergency replacement of a covered unit in a house can be a rental with a reporting clock.
The temporary unit and the install go through the same checkout as the permanent unit in Uncap Portal, with the rental date record built during implementation.
Boilers and commercial jobs
Boilers and commercial heaters get quoted before they get ordered, and a boiler quote can carry the boiler, venting, near-boiler piping, controls and a circulator.
Quoted in Uncap Quotes inside the Shopify admin, with rules that add venting, controls and piping built during implementation.

The order starts from the unit that failed. A service plumber is in a utility closet at seven in the morning with a leaking 50 gallon gas tank and a photo of its rating plate. They need the unit that goes back in the same space: same fuel, same venting, close on capacity and input, and a height and diameter that clear the same closet and vent connection. A model number search returns the dead unit's page, if anything, not the current units that replace it.

Gallons are not the rating. DOE's uniform test method for water heaters defines first-hour rating as "an estimate of the maximum volume of 'hot' water that a non-flow activated water heater can supply within an hour that begins with the water heater fully heated," and uniform energy factor as "the measure of water heater overall efficiency." Flow-activated heaters get a Maximum GPM rating instead. The test then assigns a draw pattern: a first-hour rating under 18 gallons is Very-Small-Usage, 18 to under 51 is Low, 51 to under 75 is Medium, and 75 and up is High. Because the bin follows first-hour rating, not tank size, two tanks of the same gallon size can be tested under different draw patterns. A filter that knows only gallons and fuel cannot tell them apart.

The efficiency floor moves in 2029, and it is tied to the manufacture date. 10 CFR 430.32(d) sets one minimum uniform energy factor table for "water heaters manufactured before May 6, 2029" and another for "water heaters manufactured on or after May 6, 2029." In the second, electric storage water heaters from 20 to 55 gallons, excluding small electric storage water heaters, carry a flat 2.30 in all four draw patterns. When it finalized the standards in April 2024, DOE said they "would require the most common-sized electric water heaters to achieve efficiency gains with heat pump technology." A catalog without manufacture dates cannot tell a buyer which table a unit was built to.

In Southern California, the building changes the answer. South Coast AQMD Rule 1146.2, amended June 7, 2024, applies to "manufacturers, distributors, retailers, Resellers, Installers, owners, and operators" of natural gas units up to 2,000,000 Btu per hour. It does not apply to "Units subject to a NOx emission limit in Rule 1121," the district's rule for natural gas-fired water heaters "with heat input rates less than 75,000 Btu per hour." So Rule 1146.2 reaches gas boilers up to 2,000,000 Btu per hour and gas water heaters, tank or tankless, rated from 75,000 to 2,000,000 Btu per hour. It sets zero-emission limits on a phased schedule, with compliance dates from January 1, 2026 for new buildings in Phase I to January 1, 2033 for existing buildings in Phase III. Under its labeling schedule, a unit supplied or offered for sale for use in the district before the applicable compliance dates that meets the Table 1 limits but not Table 2 "shall prominently display the statement 'If Installed in South Coast AQMD: For Installation and Use in Existing Buildings Only.'" The rule bases a unit's age on its original date of manufacture, determined from the manufacturer's invoice, the identification or rating plate, or another approved method.

Emergency replacement has its own clause. Rule 1146.2 includes an "Alternative Compliance Option for Emergency Replacements," for sudden failure after the compliance date where an electrical upgrade is needed to run a compliant unit. For residential structures, "a manufacturer, distributor, retailer, or Installer may elect to offer a Unit for rent that complies with Table 1 emission limits for up to six months," reporting the rental date "no later than 72 hours after the date the temporary Unit was rented." For a covered unit in a house, such as a gas tankless heater rated at 75,000 Btu per hour or more, once its compliance date has passed, that is a rental with a reporting clock, sold on the worst day of the customer's week.

Boilers and commercial heaters get quoted before they get ordered. Under 10 CFR 430.32(e), with an exception for boilers built to run without electricity, residential boilers manufactured on and after January 15, 2021 carry a minimum annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE) by class, such as 84 percent for a gas-fired hot water boiler and 82 for gas-fired steam, and gas-fired classes carry the design requirement "Constant-burning pilot not permitted." A boiler replacement quote can carry the boiler, venting, near-boiler piping, controls and a circulator. A commercial water heater job can be two units and a rack of parts. Circulators have their own page, pumps and controls, where pumps are selected by duty point.

The Uncap solution

A replacement match that starts from the rating plate

The contractor enters the old unit's model number, or picks fuel, venting, capacity and input, and sees the current units that fit the same space, ranked from like-for-like to upgrade.

The manufacture date on the unit record. Where your ERP records serial numbers or manufacture dates for units on hand, showing that date on the product and the order is built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect. Whether your ERP holds those records is confirmed during scoping.

The district rule checked at the ship-to. For a ship-to inside the South Coast AQMD, a step that asks whether the job is a new or existing building, shows the unit's label status and records the answer on the order is built during implementation from a ZIP code list you maintain. It is a record, not a compliance decision; the rule's obligations stay with the parties it names.

The rental, the install and the unit in one checkout. Uncap Portal lets a Shopify store "sell services and rentals alongside standard ecommerce products, through one checkout." A temporary unit and the install can go through the same checkout as the permanent unit. Recording the rental date for the report the rule asks for is built during implementation. Contractors and service companies get real multi-user accounts with roles and permissions, each buyer sees their assortment and pricing, and NET terms, invoices and payments sit in the portal. Budgets, approvals and limits per user decide what a technician can buy on the account.

Boiler and commercial jobs quoted inside Shopify. Uncap Quotes runs configure, price, quote inside the Shopify admin. Negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks apply automatically, and exceptions go to the right approver. Quotes carry validity windows and a full revision history, and an approved quote becomes a Shopify order in one click. Rules that add venting, controls and piping to a boiler quote are built during implementation on top of that workflow.

On whether a more customizable platform handles the replacement finder better. Uncap's published products do not include a rating-plate replacement match; on Shopify it is built during implementation from your spec data. So the deciding work is the attribute model and how directly the storefront reads your ERP. Integration runs through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. On the Connect route, pricing, inventory, customers and orders stay in real-time, two-way sync with no separate middleware to maintain, and the ERP stays the system of record.

Why Uncap

The line between product and build, in writing. Account pricing, approvals, quote validity windows, one-click order conversion, and services and rentals alongside products ship in Uncap Quotes and Uncap Portal. The replacement match, rating filters, manufacture dates, the district step and the rental record are built during implementation from your spec data and your ERP, not retyped by your team. The scope says which is which.

Credentials you can check. Uncap is a Shopify Platinum Partner, on Shopify since 2013, with 380+ unified storefronts launched on Shopify.

Scoped before it is built. The Uncap Blueprint is a fixed-price, four-week Shopify migration plan, credited 1:1 toward implementation. It covers solution architecture, a data migration taxonomy, an ERP integration audit, UX and flow prototyping, total cost of ownership and a risk register, and ends with a fixed-cost implementation estimate. For a water heater distributor, that architecture work can cover the replacement attribute model, rating data, manufacture dates and the ERP integration. You walk with everything you need to brief any agency or your in-house team.

This page sits under plumbing, HVAC and mechanical supply ecommerce, which covers lookup for parts, diagrams, supersession, fittings and truck stock. This page goes one level down, into the whole water heater or boiler. For condensing units, furnaces, air handlers and matched systems, see HVAC equipment and parts. For thermostats and zoning sold against the installed system, see thermostats and controls. For boiler and commercial quotes stuck in email, see the field notes on fixing B2B quoting on Shopify. For the ERP side, see the Epicor Eclipse integration, the Infor SX.e integration, or the full list of ERP integrations.

07 Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Does a water heater distributor on Epicor Eclipse need a more customizable platform than Shopify for a replacement finder?

Not necessarily. Uncap's published products do not include a rating-plate replacement match; on Shopify it is built during implementation from your spec data and cross references. The weight falls on a clean attribute model and on how directly the storefront reads Eclipse. Integration runs through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. On the Connect route, pricing, inventory, customers and orders stay in real-time, two-way sync with no separate middleware, and Eclipse stays the system of record.

What is a water heater's first-hour rating, and how is it different from tank size?

First-hour rating is DOE's estimate of the most hot water a water heater that is not flow-activated can supply in an hour, starting fully heated; tank size is rated storage volume. DOE uses first-hour rating to place a unit in one of four draw patterns, with breakpoints at 18, 51 and 75 gallons, so two same-size tanks can be tested under different patterns.

What is uniform energy factor, and why does the draw pattern matter?

Uniform energy factor is DOE's "measure of water heater overall efficiency." In the table for units made before May 6, 2029, the minimum depends on product class, rated storage volume, draw pattern and, for some classes, input rating. For a gas-fired storage water heater of 20 to 55 gallons, the Medium draw minimum is 0.6483 minus 0.0017 times the rated storage volume, which is 0.5803 at a rated storage volume of 40 gallons.

What changes for water heaters on May 6, 2029?

10 CFR 430.32(d)(2) sets new minimum uniform energy factors for "water heaters manufactured on or after May 6, 2029." For electric storage water heaters from 20 to 55 gallons, excluding small electric storage water heaters, the minimum is 2.30. DOE said the standards "would require the most common-sized electric water heaters to achieve efficiency gains with heat pump technology." On Shopify, showing each unit's manufacture date and rating is built during implementation from your data.

What happened to the 2024 federal standard for gas tankless water heaters?

DOE withdrew it. DOE published amended standards for gas-fired instantaneous water heaters on December 26, 2024, and on May 20, 2025 it withdrew that final rule under the Congressional Review Act. In the current table for water heaters manufactured before May 6, 2029, an instantaneous gas-fired water heater under 2 gallons and over 50,000 Btu per hour carries a minimum uniform energy factor of 0.80 at Very Small draw and 0.81 at Low, Medium and High.

Does South Coast AQMD Rule 1146.2 apply to distributors?

The rule states that it applies to "manufacturers, distributors, retailers, Resellers, Installers, owners, and operators" of natural gas units up to 2,000,000 Btu per hour. It exempts "Units subject to a NOx emission limit in Rule 1121," which covers natural gas-fired water heaters under 75,000 Btu per hour. Under its labeling schedule, units supplied or offered for sale for use in the district before the applicable compliance dates that meet Table 1 but not Table 2 "shall prominently display" the statement "If Installed in South Coast AQMD: For Installation and Use in Existing Buildings Only." Uncap does not decide compliance. A ship-to step that records new or existing building on the order, and shows the label status, is built during implementation.

How should the site work when a customer has no hot water?

It should get the contractor from the old unit to a new one on a shelf they can reach today. The replacement match is built during implementation, and branch stock and will call are built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect. Where a temporary unit is needed, Uncap Portal sells the rental and the install through the same checkout.

Which ERPs does this connect to?

Uncap publishes twelve ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage and SAP. Integration pages linked from the plumbing, HVAC and mechanical page include Epicor Eclipse, Infor SX.e and Epicor Prophet 21. Integrations are delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app or a managed iPaaS integration. Whether your ERP holds serial numbers and manufacture dates for units on hand is confirmed during scoping.

What is the difference between this page and the plumbing, HVAC and mechanical page?

The hub covers the contractor who knows the model and needs a part: lookup, diagrams, supersession, fittings and truck stock. This page covers replacing the whole water heater or boiler: matching the old rating plate, first-hour rating, UEF and draw pattern, the 2029 standards, South Coast AQMD Rule 1146.2, and boiler and commercial quotes.
