Sell Pumps by Duty Point, With the Control That Runs Them

Uncap builds pump and pump control B2B ecommerce on Shopify for pump manufacturers and pump and plumbing distributors selling to plumbers, well drillers, HVAC contractors and facility buyers. The trade sells against a number the buyer brings, not a part number: the flow and head the job needs. A pump is right when its curve meets that duty point. The control that runs it, whether a pressure switch, tank, control box or drive, is part of the same sale. For pumps in DOE's scope, a speed control the manufacturer sells with the pump and motor also changes which federal rating applies. And when a sump or well pump fails, the question is which branch has the replacement today.

The challenge

Where a generic storefront breaks for pumps and controls

The trade sells against a number the buyer brings, not a part number: the flow and head the job needs.

Factor
Generic storefront setup
What pump sellers need
Duty point
A category page that filters by horsepower and voltage leaves the duty point to your counter.
The buyer enters flow and head and sees the models whose curve reaches it, built during implementation from your manufacturers' curve data.
Off-curve selections
When the duty point misses the curve, the fix can be another model, a trimmed impeller or a drive.
A duty point no stock model meets, or a selection that needs an engineer, goes to a quote instead of the cart, with routing rules configured during implementation.
Pump, control and tank
A storefront that sells the pump, tank and switch as three unrelated items leaves the precharge arithmetic to the job site.
A well pump with its control box, pressure switch and tank as one package, with the precharge note carried from the switch setting, built during implementation.
DOE rating
Sold bare, or sold by the manufacturer with a motor and a speed control, the same pump is rated on a different index.
A scope flag, the rated PEI and the bare pump model number the manufacturer supplies, on product and printable catalog pages, configured during implementation.
Emergency replacement
When a sump or well pump fails, the question is which branch has the replacement today.
The buyer's home branch, then the nearest branches with will call, built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect.

A pump is bought against a duty point, not a part number. The plumber or engineer arrives with a flow and a head. Grundfos's pump selection training defines the target: "Duty Point: This is the desired operating point of the system for the customer." Then the catch: "However, a fixed speed pump will only operate where the pump performance curve intersects the system curve." So the curve, not the horsepower in the product title, tells the buyer where the pump will run. A category page that filters by horsepower and voltage leaves that question to your counter.

When the duty point misses the curve, the fix can be another line on the order. The same module lists the fixes when a pump cannot reach the flow or head: "changing the system, the pump (smaller impeller or different pump), or how the pump operates possibly incorporating a variable frequency drive." Another model, a trimmed impeller or a drive. Each of those is something you sell.

The control is part of what you are selling. The Department of Energy counts it that way in 10 CFR Part 431, Subpart Y. A pump "includes a bare pump and, if included by the manufacturer at the time of sale, mechanical equipment, driver, and controls." A control is "any device that can be used to operate the driver," and DOE's examples include "on/off switches, and float switches." For pumps in the rule's scope, the nameplate carries the constant load index, PEI CL, "for bare pumps and pumps sold with electric motors but not continuous or non-continuous controls." It carries the variable load index, PEI VL, "for pumps sold with motors and continuous or non-continuous controls." Sold bare, or sold by the manufacturer with a motor and a speed control, the same pump is rated on a different index.

The tank and the switch have to agree. Amtrol's Well-X-Trol installation instructions set the diaphragm tank's air charge from the pressure switch. They say to "set the pre-charge pressure 2 psig below the pressure switch pump cut-in setting." Their example is "38 psig precharge for a 40/60 pressure." Pair that tank with a 30/50 switch and the precharge is 28 psig. A storefront that sells the pump, tank and switch as three unrelated items leaves that arithmetic to the job site.

The federal rating has to reach the catalog page. Under 10 CFR 431.465, pumps in the covered equipment classes, manufactured starting on January 27, 2020, that meet DOE's clean water pump definition and are not on its exclusion list "must have a PEI CL or PEI VL rating of not more than 1.00." The scope is specific, down to a "Flow rate of 25 gpm or greater at BEP at full impeller diameter." That makes scope a field a pump catalog needs to carry. For the pumps its general test procedure describes, 10 CFR 431.466 says the nameplate information "must also be prominently displayed: (A) On each page of a catalog that lists the pump; and (B) In other materials used to market the pump."

Replacement does not wait for a quote. A sump pump quits in a storm. A well pump leaves a house with no pressure at the tap. Either one turns a contractor's day into a parts run. The questions are which branch has the unit or its replacement on the shelf now, and whether the control and tank already on site will work with it.

Duty point first, then the catalog. The buyer enters flow and head. The storefront compares that duty point with each manufacturer's curve data and shows the models whose curve reaches it. Uncap's published products do not include pump-curve selection; on Shopify it is built during implementation from your manufacturers' curve data. A duty point no stock model meets, or a selection that needs an engineer, goes to a quote instead of the cart.

The package as one record. A well pump with its control box, pressure switch and tank becomes one package. So does a booster with its drive. Each package has its own price and rating fields. For pumps in DOE's scope, that means the PEI CL the manufacturer rates for a bare pump or a pump sold with a motor, and the PEI VL it rates for a pump sold with a motor and a continuous or non-continuous control. The tank's precharge note is carried from the switch setting. Package records, and the rules that pair a pump with compatible controls, are built during implementation from your manufacturers' data.

Scope and rating fields where they are needed. Each pump SKU carries a flag for whether it falls in DOE's scope. Where it does, the rated PEI and bare pump model number the manufacturer supplies show on the product page and on printable catalog pages. Those fields and their display are configured during implementation. The data, and the call on which pumps are in scope, come from the manufacturer; the storefront displays it and does not make anyone compliant.

On whether a Prophet 21 specialist reads price and stock more directly. The case for a commerce platform built around the ERP is that contract pricing and branch inventory come straight from it. Uncap's published products do not include duty-point selection or pump packages; on Shopify that layer is built during implementation from your data. Integration runs through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. On the Connect route there is no separate middleware. Uncap Connect keeps Shopify and the ERP in real-time, two-way sync of inventory, orders, customers and pricing. It syncs "customer-specific pricing, credit terms, and tax rules," and the ERP stays the system of record.

Replacement stock by branch. Branch-first availability, showing the buyer's home branch and then the nearest branches with will call, is built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect. A replacement offered as a package, with the control and tank on site checked against the new pump, is built from the same package rules.

Accounts that match how the trade buys. In Uncap Portal, plumbing contractors, well drillers, HVAC contractors and facility buyers get real multi-user accounts with roles and permissions. Each buyer sees their assortment and pricing. Pressure switches, float switches and check valves sit on reorder lists. Budgets, approvals and limits per user let a facility manager cap what a technician can order, and NET terms, invoices and payments sit in the portal. For a manufacturer selling through distributors, reps see activity and openings at a glance.

Engineered selections through Uncap Quotes. Uncap Quotes runs the configure, price, quote process inside the Shopify admin, with negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks applied automatically. It sends exceptions to the right approver. Quotes carry validity windows and a full revision history, and approved quotes turn straight into Shopify orders. The duty point, the selected model and the package go on the quote, in fields configured during implementation.

Why Uncap

The line between product and build, in writing. Account pricing, approval routing, validity windows, one-click order conversion, reorder lists and per-user limits ship in Uncap Quotes and Uncap Portal. Duty-point selection, pump packages, DOE rating fields and branch-first availability are built during implementation from your data. The scope says which is which.

Credentials you can check. Uncap is a Shopify Platinum Partner, on Shopify since 2013, with 380+ unified storefronts launched on Shopify.

Scoped before it is built. The Uncap Blueprint is a fixed-price, four-week Shopify migration plan, credited 1:1 toward implementation. It covers solution architecture, a data migration taxonomy, an ERP integration audit, UX and flow prototyping, total cost of ownership and a risk register, and ends with a fixed-cost implementation estimate. For a pump manufacturer or distributor, that architecture work can cover curve data, package rules, DOE rating fields and the ERP integration. You walk with everything you need to brief any agency or your in-house team.

This page sits under plumbing, HVAC and mechanical supply ecommerce, which covers model and serial lookup, supersession and fittings. This page goes one level down, into selecting a pump by duty point and selling it with its control. Boilers and water heaters have their own page on water heater and boiler ecommerce. Irrigation and water systems covers pumps sold for farm and landscape irrigation, where pump sizing goes to a designer, while this page covers pumps for buildings, wells, drainage and hydronic systems. For how irrigation distributors quote pumps beside configured kits, see the field notes on irrigation kits and pump quoting. For the ERP side, see the Epicor Prophet 21 integration, the Epicor Eclipse integration, or the full list of ERP integrations.

Ready to talk

Bring two documents. The first is the curve sheet for your best-selling booster or well pump line, with the duty points your counter quoted against it last month. The second is the list of controls and tanks your counter puts with each of those pumps. Together they show how much selling still happens off the product page.

Book a strategy session with Uncap, or start with a Blueprint if what you need first is the curve data, package rules and DOE fields written down and costed.

07 Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Should a pump distributor on Prophet 21 use a P21-specialist commerce platform instead of Shopify?

Not necessarily. On Shopify, duty-point selection and pump-and-control packages are built during implementation from your manufacturers' curve data. So the question is how directly the storefront reads Prophet 21 pricing and branch stock. Integration runs through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. On the Connect route there is no separate middleware to maintain. Inventory, orders, customers and pricing stay in real-time, two-way sync, customer-specific pricing and credit terms sync too, and Prophet 21 stays the system of record.

What is a pump duty point?

It is the flow and head the system needs from the pump. Grundfos's selection training defines it as "the desired operating point of the system for the customer." A fixed speed pump only runs where its performance curve crosses the system curve, so the model you sell has to meet the duty point.

How do you select a pump from a pump curve?

Start with the head and flow the system needs, then find the models whose curve reaches that point. Grundfos's training reads the curve from the head: "Once you have determined the head, draw a horizontal line from that head to the Pump Performance Curve". If the pump you picked will not run at that point, the module's fixes are changing the system, the pump (a smaller impeller or a different pump), or how the pump operates, possibly with a variable frequency drive. The brake horsepower curve "is used to determine the size of the motor needed for the application."

What pressure should a well tank be precharged to?

Follow the tank maker's instructions. For Amtrol's Well-X-Trol residential tanks, that is 2 psig below the pressure switch cut-in setting. Amtrol's example is "38 psig precharge for a 40/60 pressure," so a 30/50 switch means 28 psig. Other tank makers publish their own manuals. On a well package, the precharge note travels with the switch setting, built during implementation.

Do DOE energy conservation standards apply to the pumps we sell?

DOE's rule decides, pump by pump. 10 CFR 431.465 sets a maximum PEI of 1.00 for pumps in its listed equipment classes, manufactured starting on January 27, 2020, that meet its clean water pump definition and the other criteria it lists. The listed equipment classes cover end suction close-coupled, end suction frame mounted, in-line, radially split multi-stage vertical in-line diffuser casing and submersible turbine pumps. For submersible turbine pumps, the standard applies only to a 6-inch or smaller bowl diameter. Fire pumps and self-priming pumps are among its exclusions. The storefront carries each SKU's scope flag and rating as the manufacturer supplies them, and scope is confirmed with the manufacturer.

Do circulator pumps have a DOE efficiency standard?

DOE's rule sets one with a compliance date in 2028. Under 10 CFR 431.465(i), a clean water circulator "manufactured starting on May 22, 2028," other than a submersible or header pump, must have a circulator energy index rating "of not more than 1.00." A circulator catalog can carry a field for that rating, configured during implementation and filled from manufacturer data.

How should the site handle an emergency pump replacement?

It should show where the replacement is today. Branch-first availability and will call are built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect, with the replacement package checked against the control and tank on site. A different size goes to the counter as a quote through Uncap Quotes.

Which ERPs does this connect to?

Uncap publishes twelve ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage and SAP. The plumbing, HVAC and mechanical page names Epicor Eclipse, Infor SX.e and Epicor Prophet 21 as the ones that come up most. Integrations are delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. Whether your ERP holds curve data and package structures is confirmed during scoping.

What is the difference between this page and the plumbing, HVAC and mechanical page?

The plumbing, HVAC and mechanical page covers finding the part from the unit a contractor is servicing: model and serial lookup, supersession and fittings. This page covers what a pump order adds: the duty point, the control and tank sold with the pump, and the DOE rating on the catalog page.
