What Is a Case Pack?

- A case pack is the number of identical units a supplier packs into one standard shipping case. The case can hold loose units or inner packs of units. When a supplier sells only full cases, orders come in multiples of the case pack: a product packed 12 to a case sells in 12, 24, 36 and so on.
How it works
Case packs sit inside a packaging hierarchy. GS1 US defines the levels this way:
- Each. The lowest level of the item hierarchy intended or labeled for individual resale.
- Inner pack. An intermediate package of multiples of the same trade item, or a predefined assortment of trade items.
- Case. A standard shipping unit that contains eaches, packaged either individually or grouped as inner packs. All of the items in a case must have the same GTIN.
- Pallet. A shipping unit that contains cases, inner packs, or eaches.
Beside the standard case above, GS1 US defines three related packaging levels:
- Mixed case. Contains more than one type of each and must contain more than one GTIN, for example 4 jars of strawberry jam and 4 jars of blueberry jam.
- Case as each. For goods shipped as a case whose contents are never offered for sale on their own. Industries such as foodservice use it to make the case the lowest orderable unit, and the contents are not assigned GTINs.
- Display shipper. A shipping unit that is a self-contained display, holding one type of each or several.
How a case pack is identified
In GS1 US packaging levels, the each and the case carry different identifiers. The each, generally the consumer unit sold at checkout or online, is assigned a GTIN-12 (U.P.C.). When GS1 US assigns a GTIN to a case of one product, it is a GTIN-14, and the case's barcode is an ITF-14, used for shipping and receiving.
- The GTIN-14's first digit is an indicator digit from 1 to 8 (9 is reserved for variable measure trade items), so one product can have up to eight GTIN-14s for shipping units that hold different quantities of it.
- A mixed case is not assigned a GTIN-14, because it holds two or more unique GTINs.
- Once a case's GTIN is in use, its product and quantity cannot change. If either changes, GS1 US says to create a new case and assign a new GTIN, so a new case pack quantity means a new case identifier.
Example
A supplier packs a product 24 to a case (4 inner packs of 6) and sells full cases only.
- A buyer asks for 50 units. 50 is not a multiple of 24, so the nearest valid orders are 48 (2 cases) or 72 (3 cases).
- The buyer orders 48, which ships as 2 full cases.
On Shopify
Shopify B2B handles case packs natively with increment quantity rules in catalogs. Shopify's example: if your products are boxed in multiples of 10, you can set your increment rule to 10 so customers must purchase 10, 20 or 30 at a time. An increment must be a positive whole number of 1 or more, and the default increment is 1. Increment rules apply to product variants, so customers can't combine 5 gray hats and 5 blue hats to meet an increment of 10 hats. Quantity rules are re-validated in checkout. If you add volume pricing, each price break quantity must be a multiple of the increment.
Quantity rules are available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, after Shopify extended its foundational B2B features to Basic, Grow and Advanced in April 2026.
How Uncap helps
Units per case, inner packs, and pallet-layer quantities live in the ERP item master, so our guide to order minimums, case packs and MOQs on Shopify treats storefront rules as mirrors that need a sync. Keeping item-master pack data and catalog rules aligned is part of the same ERP sync discipline Uncap Connect runs for pricing and inventory: the ERP decides, the storefront displays.

Frequently asked questions
What does a case pack mean?
A case pack of 12 means each standard shipping case holds 12 identical units, so full-case orders come in multiples of 12.
What does case pack quantity mean?
Case pack quantity is the unit count inside one case. If the case holds inner packs, multiply the inner packs per case by the units per inner pack.
What's the difference between a case and a pack?
In the GS1 hierarchy, an inner pack is an intermediate package of the same item, and a case is the standard shipping unit that holds eaches or inner packs. A case of 4 inner packs of 6 holds 24 units.
