Sell Truck Accessories by Cab and Bed, Not Just Year, Make and Model

Uncap builds truck and off-road accessories B2B ecommerce on Shopify for manufacturers and distributors selling tonneau covers, truck boxes, bed liners, racks, steps, bumpers, lighting and lift kits to installers, upfitters, dealerships and retailers. This trade has its own fitment problem. Two trucks of the same year, make and model can need different covers, because one has the short bed and one has the long bed. GM's assist step kit mounts at four bracket locations per side on a crew cab and two on a regular cab. And when a truck box ships on a pallet, it may be going to a dealer's customer rather than to the dealer.

The challenge

Where a generic storefront breaks for truck and off-road accessories

This trade has its own fitment problem, and when a truck box ships on a pallet, it may be going to a dealer's customer rather than to the dealer.

Factor
Generic storefront setup
What truck accessories sellers need
Same model, two parts
A selector that stops at the model shows the installer both and leaves the guess to the bay.
Cab style, bed length and bed type from your ACES applications narrow the catalog, built during implementation.
Install hardware
One GM assist step kit uses 8, 12 or 16 M8 bolts, at two, three or four bracket locations per side, depending on the truck.
The install guide and hardware count for the buyer's cab shown with the part, built during implementation.
Fitment notes
A storefront that does not show the note can sell the cover to a truck it does not fit.
Exclusions such as a factory bed storage system shown on the product page and checked at add to cart, built during implementation.
Freight
A cart that holds a palletized box and a set of light pods cannot be priced like a box of floor mats.
Truck boxes, hard covers and bumpers in their own Shopify shipping profile, with freight rating, liftgate and residential charges built during implementation.
Drop ship
The price on the order is the dealer's, and the address is not.
Orders on the dealer's account shipped to the truck owner's address with no dealer cost on the slip, built during implementation on Shopify B2B company locations.
Dealership programs
A dealership program orders the same cover and steps at program pricing, with your rep watching the account.
Negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks applied automatically through Uncap Quotes, with program catalogs and enrollment built during implementation.

Year, make and model gets you to the truck. Cab and bed get you to the part. Westin's application chart for its soft tri-fold tonneau cover lists the 2015 to 2022 Chevrolet Colorado twice. With the 61.7 in. bed, the part is 19-26385. With the 74 in. bed, it is 19-23365. Same years, same make, same model, two part numbers. LEER's fiberglass cover FAQ ties fitment to the bed as well: it "depends on the truck make, model, model year, bed configuration, and bed size." A selector that stops at the model shows the installer both and leaves the guess to the bay.

Cab style can change how the part goes on. GM's installation sheet for an assist step kit, part number 84067185, counts the M8 bolts by cab: 8 for a Regular Cab, 12 for an Extended Cab, 16 for a Crew Cab. Each side mounts at two, three or four bracket locations. The installer staging that job tomorrow needs the cab on the order today.

Bed features can exclude parts, too. The same Westin chart carries fitment notes, including "Excludes Vehicles With Rambox." Its other notes qualify fit "with Cargo Management" and by "New Body Style." A storefront that does not show the note can sell the cover to a truck it does not fit.

ACES can carry bed and body attributes, when the file includes them. The Auto Care Association lists "Current Version: 5.0 Previous Version: 4.2." Its earlier ACES XML schema, version 4.1, lists BedLength, BedType, BodyType and BodyNumDoors among the optional attributes an application can carry, and notes that "Vehicle Attributes reference the primary key in the associated VCdb table." That schema has no element named for cab. So where a file carries cab style at all, it comes through another attribute such as body type or submodel, or through a qualifier or note, and a file that leaves them out sends the bare model to the storefront. Auto Care says ACES 5.0 brought "the renaming and removing of specific xml elements and attributes," so check the names in your own export.

When a truck box ships as freight, it is not priced like a parcel. When a crossover box, a hard folding cover or a steel bumper goes out on a pallet, the rate can depend on where it lands. A dealership with a dock is one kind of delivery. A shop with no dock may need a liftgate. A cart that holds a palletized box and a set of light pods cannot be priced like a box of floor mats.

Drop ship and dealership programs put three parties on one order. A dealer sells a cover to a customer and asks you to ship it to the customer's house. The price on the order is the dealer's. The address is not. When a dealership runs an accessory program, it orders the same cover and steps for a run of incoming crew cabs, at program pricing, with your rep watching the account.

Cab and bed fitment, on top of a fitment product that ships. Uncap Garage is a Year-Make-Model fitment app for Shopify, built for automotive parts and accessories merchants. It gives buyers a vehicle selector they save once and reuse everywhere, Year/Make/Model filtering across catalog, search and collections, and fits or doesn't-fit badges on every product and variant. It imports industry-standard ACES and PIES fitment, or your own, and its coverage console shows what is mapped and what is missing. Narrowing by cab style, bed length and bed type, and showing a fitment note like a storage-system exclusion before the part reaches the cart, is built during implementation from your ACES data.

Hardware and install notes that follow the cab. When the buyer's truck record carries its cab, the product page can show the right install guide and the hardware count for that cab. Linking cab-specific install documents and hardware to each application is built during implementation from your catalog data.

Freight items priced as freight. On Shopify, "A shipping profile is a set of shipping rules for specific products and locations," and you can create up to 99 custom shipping profiles when different products need different rates. Truck boxes, hard covers and bumpers that ship as freight can sit in their own profile, away from parcel items. Freight rating with liftgate and residential charges is built during implementation. Routing a load that needs a person to Uncap Quotes is built during implementation; Quotes runs configure, price, quote inside the Shopify admin and sends exceptions to the right approver. Uncap Portal lets a Shopify store sell services alongside standard ecommerce products through one checkout, so a liftgate or a scheduled delivery can be sold as a service, configured during implementation.

Drop ship on the dealer's account. In Shopify B2B, a company location is the business you sell to, and each location can have its own shipping address, billing address, payment terms and contacts. A dealer group becomes a company, and each store or install bay a location with its own address. Shipping a dealer's order to the truck owner's address, at the dealer's price, with a packing slip that shows no dealer cost, is built during implementation.

Dealership programs as accounts, not spreadsheets. In Uncap Portal, dealerships, upfitters and installers get real multi-user accounts with roles and permissions, and each buyer sees their assortment and pricing. Reorder lists keep the program's covers and steps a click away. Budgets, approvals and limits per user set what each counter person can order. Reps see activity and openings at a glance. In Uncap Quotes, negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks apply automatically. A program catalog with its own enrollment and pricing window is built during implementation. Shopify Plus assigns catalogs directly to companies and locations; the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans allow up to three active catalogs across all B2B markets.

On whether an ERP vendor's own connector makes another platform safer. One case made for another platform is an ERP vendor's published connector to it. The real risk on Shopify is an integration that does not carry B2B accounts, ship-to locations, pricing and stock through correctly. Uncap's integrations are delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. On the Connect route there is no separate middleware. Uncap Connect keeps the two in real-time, two-way sync and syncs customer-specific pricing, credit terms and tax rules. The ERP stays the system of record. Cab and bed filtering sits in the storefront either way, built during implementation from your ACES data.

Proof, labeled at its true distance. Uncap has not published a truck accessories case study. The closest is adjacent: Kooks, a headers and exhaust manufacturer. It runs on Shopify with Infor Visual ERP and a PDM Automotive PIM that powers vehicle-fitment search by year, make, model and engine. It has secure B2B portals with custom pricing, account management and reordering. It shows fitment search and wholesale accounts on one build, not cab and bed fitment or freight.

Why Uncap

The line between product and build, in writing. Year/Make/Model fitment, the saved vehicle, fit badges and ACES and PIES import ship in Uncap Garage. Account pricing, approvals, reorder lists and quote-to-order ship in Uncap Portal and Uncap Quotes. Cab and bed filtering, fitment notes, freight rating, drop ship and program catalogs are built during implementation from your data. The scope says which is which.

Built from the fitment file you already send. If your ACES applications carry bed length and body attributes for the retailers you supply, the cab and bed filtering built during implementation reads from that file rather than a second list kept by hand.

Credentials you can check. Uncap is a Shopify Platinum Partner, on Shopify since 2013, with 380+ unified storefronts launched on Shopify.

Scoped before it is built. The Uncap Blueprint is a fixed-price, four-week Shopify migration plan, credited 1:1 toward implementation. It covers solution architecture, a data migration taxonomy, an ERP integration audit, UX and flow prototyping, total cost of ownership and a risk register, and ends with a fixed-cost implementation estimate. For a truck accessories manufacturer, that architecture work can cover cab and bed fitment, freight rules, drop ship and the ERP integration. You walk with everything you need to brief any agency or your in-house team.

This page sits under auto parts and aftermarket ecommerce, which covers fitment as the product, trade and DIY buyers, core charges, jobber tiers and supersession. This page goes one level down, into the cab, the bed and the pallet. Hitches and towing accessories fitted to the tow vehicle, and trailer parts sold by spec, are on trailer and towing ecommerce. If your lift kits sell alongside wheel and tire packages, see wheel and tire distributor ecommerce. For how fitment files are structured, see the field notes on ACES and PIES fitment data standards. For the ERP side, see the Epicor Kinetic integration, the Infor VISUAL integration, or the full list of ERP integrations.

Ready to talk

Bring two documents. The first is the application chart for your best-selling cover or step, with its bed lengths, cab styles and fitment notes. The second is last quarter's freight invoices for truck boxes and bumpers. Together they show how many part numbers turn on cab and bed, and what freight is costing you per order.

Book a strategy session with Uncap, or start with a Blueprint if what you need first is the cab and bed fitment, freight rules and dealer drop ship written down and costed.

07 Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Should a truck accessories manufacturer on Epicor Kinetic choose a platform with an ERP vendor connector instead of Shopify?

Not necessarily. A vendor connector answers the ERP question, and on Shopify that question has an answer too. Uncap publishes an Epicor Kinetic integration, and integrations are delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration. On the Connect route, pricing, inventory, customers and orders stay in real-time, two-way sync with no separate middleware, and Kinetic stays the system of record. Year/Make/Model fitment ships in Uncap Garage. Cab and bed filtering is built during implementation from your ACES data.

Does ACES fitment data carry bed length and cab style?

It can carry bed length, and in the 4.1 schema cab style has no element of its own. The Auto Care Association's ACES schema, version 4.1, lists BedLength, BedType, BodyType and BodyNumDoors as optional vehicle attributes, each referencing a VCdb table. Because they are optional, a file can leave them out. Auto Care says the VCdb's structure lets companies communicate vehicle data for their products "with as much or as little detail as necessary to properly catalog and sell a product." Auto Care now lists 5.0 as the current version and 4.2 as the previous one, and 5.0 renamed and removed some elements, so check your own ACES export for bed and body attributes before you plan cab and bed filtering.

Why does the same tonneau cover have different part numbers for one truck?

Because the bed length differs, even when the year, make and model match. Westin's chart for its soft tri-fold cover lists the 2015 to 2022 Chevrolet Colorado with a 61.7 in. bed as part 19-26385 and with a 74 in. bed as 19-23365. Fitment notes can also exclude a truck, such as "Excludes Vehicles With Rambox." A storefront has to ask for the bed, not just the model.

Are truck running boards and steps universal?

Check the cab: even one kit can install differently by cab. GM's installation sheet for its assist step kit, part number 84067185, counts M8 bolts by cab: 8 for a Regular Cab, 12 for an Extended Cab, 16 for a Crew Cab. Each side mounts at two, three or four bracket locations. Your application chart decides fit. On Shopify, filtering steps by cab is built during implementation from your ACES data.

How should a B2B site handle truck boxes and other freight items?

Where they ship as freight, price them separately from parcel items. Shopify shipping profiles set rules for specific products, with up to 99 custom profiles, so truck boxes, hard covers and bumpers can carry their own rates. Freight rating, liftgate and residential charges are built during implementation. Routing loads that need a person, such as mixed pallets, through Uncap Quotes is built during implementation; Quotes sends exceptions to the right approver, and an approved quote turns straight into a Shopify order.

Can a dealer's order ship straight to the truck owner?

Yes, as a drop ship built during implementation. In Shopify B2B, each company location can have its own shipping address, billing address and payment terms. The dealer orders on its own account at its own price, and the shipment goes to the customer's address with no dealer cost on the packing slip. That routing and the slip are built during implementation.

Does Uncap Garage filter by cab style and bed length?

Not as a shipped feature. Uncap Garage ships Year/Make/Model filtering, a saved vehicle, fits or doesn't-fit badges on every product and variant, ACES and PIES import and a coverage console. Cab style, bed length and bed type filtering, and fitment notes at add to cart, are built during implementation from your ACES data on top of that.

Which ERPs does this connect to?

Uncap publishes twelve ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage and SAP. Integration pages that fit truck accessories manufacturers include Epicor Kinetic and Infor VISUAL. Uncap's Kinetic page describes Kinetic customers becoming Shopify companies, with ship-to addresses as company locations. Integrations are delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app or a managed iPaaS integration.

What is the difference between this page and the auto parts and trailer pages?

The auto parts and aftermarket page covers fitment as the product, trade and DIY buyers, core charges, jobber tiers and supersession. The trailer and towing page covers hitches fitted to the tow vehicle and trailer parts sold by spec. This page covers bed and cab accessories: fitment that turns on cab style and bed length, truck boxes and bumpers that ship as freight, dealer drop ship and dealership programs.
