Sell Hardwood Flooring by Species and Grade, Shipped From One Lot

Uncap builds hardwood flooring B2B ecommerce on Shopify for flooring mills, importers and the distributors who supply flooring dealers and installing contractors. Hardwood breaks a normal building materials catalog in four places. The product is a stack of choices (species, grade, cut, width, thickness, solid or engineered, finish), so a variant table runs out long before your line card does. Coverage per bundle is an average across random lengths, not a fixed number. Contractors want one lot on one job. And the order carries conditions: acclimation before installation, plus import and formaldehyde paperwork on the products that need it.

The challenge

Where a generic storefront breaks for hardwood flooring

Hardwood is a stack of attributes sold in random length bundles, wanted from one lot per job, with conditions attached to the order.

Factor
Generic storefront setup
What hardwood flooring needs
Attributes
Every combination built as a variant, so the catalog fills with items nobody stocks.
A configurator where only the combinations you mill or stock resolve to a sellable item, built during implementation.
Grade
The grade buried in a description, throwing away the attribute your buyer chooses on.
NWFA/NOFMA grades for unfinished solid and each manufacturer's own grades for factory finished, held as filters.
Bundle coverage
A single bundle's printed coverage treated as exact, when it is true only across a truckload.
Coverage per bundle stated with the note that it averages across a shipment, built during implementation.
One lot per job
One total on hand across all lots, so the store accepts an order only two lots together can fill.
Built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect, so only what one lot can fill is promised.
Acclimation and paperwork
The conditions your mill sets decide the warranty claim, and some products carry import and formaldehyde paperwork.
Acclimation requirements on each product, plus species, country of harvest and TSCA Title VI label status where they apply, configured during implementation.

The item is a stack of attributes, not a SKU. A hardwood line is species, grade, cut, width, thickness, construction and finish, multiplied together. Red oak or white oak, plain sawn or rift and quartered, strip or wide plank, unfinished or factory finished. Construction is its own fork. The NWFA installation guidelines call engineered wood flooring "real wood from top to bottom." Composite engineered flooring "contains real wood on the wearable surface only." Build every combination as a variant and the catalog fills with items nobody stocks.

Grade is identity, and the rules are published. Under the NWFA/NOFMA standard for unfinished solid flooring, oak is graded Clear, Select, No. 1 Common and No. 2 Common, often sold combined as Select & Better. The standard is plain: "Appearance alone determines the grades of hardwood flooring since all grades are equally strong and serviceable in any application." Every bundle of standard grade flooring must be marked with its grade and color or species. A site that buries the grade in a description has thrown away the attribute your buyer chooses on.

Random length makes coverage an average. Hardwood ships in random length bundles, and the standard sets minimums rather than fixed lengths. For oak strip, the average board length minimum runs from 36 inches for Clear down to 24 inches for No. 2 Common, no piece may be shorter than 9 inches, and widths over 5 inches have no board length compliance at all. Square footage per bundle "should meet or exceed the stated square footage," judged on the average of any one shipment of 1,000 square feet or more. So the coverage printed on a bundle is true across a truckload and approximate on any single bundle.

One job, one lot. A contractor laying a floor through three rooms wants every bundle from the same production lot. A dealer reordering for the closet the installer missed wants to know whether that lot is still on the shelf. Your ERP knows which lot each bundle belongs to. The storefront usually shows one total on hand across all of them, so it happily accepts an order that only two lots together can fill.

Acclimation is a condition of the sale. Under the NWFA/NOFMA standard, certified unfinished solid flooring "is manufactured at a 6% to 9% MC" (moisture content). The jobsite is another matter. The NWFA acclimation chapter opens with "Unless otherwise directed by the flooring manufacturer." Jobsite temperature and humidity "must be within the manufacturer's requirements." For engineered flooring, the installer follows the manufacturer's acclimation and installation instructions "to retain all warranty coverage." So the conditions your mill sets decide the warranty claim. They belong on the product and on the order.

Imported and engineered products carry paperwork. Flooring imported under an APHIS-listed tariff code needs a Lacey Act declaration from the importer of record or their customs broker. It names the genus and species of the wood and the country where it was harvested. Engineered lines can bring a second regime. EPA's TSCA Title VI rules regulate hardwood plywood, medium-density fiberboard and particleboard, and treat a wood veneer affixed to a regulated core as a laminated product. Regulated products made or imported after March 22, 2019 must be labeled TSCA Title VI compliant. Whether an engineered line is in scope depends on its core, which is the manufacturer's call.

A configurator over the items you actually make. The buyer picks species, grade, cut, width, thickness, construction and finish. Only the combinations you mill or stock resolve to a sellable item, and the rest route to a quote. The attribute model and combination rules are built during implementation from your line card. Pricing runs through Uncap Quotes, which handles the configure, price, quote workflow inside the Shopify admin, with negotiated account prices, tiers and volume breaks applied automatically. A dealer sees their price per square foot for No. 1 Common white oak, 5 inch, unfinished, the moment they choose it.

Coverage stated the way the standard states it. The building materials layer already turns square feet into sellable units and adds the waste factor. For hardwood, the rounding to bundles and cartons, the stated coverage per bundle, and the note that coverage is an average across a shipment are built during implementation. Shorts bundles, which the standard defines as pieces 9 to 18 inches long bundled together, become their own items with their own coverage.

One lot per order, from the ERP's own lot data. The ERP tracks stock by lot. Lot-level availability, so the storefront only promises a quantity a single lot can fill and the order records which lot it ships from, is built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect. For hardwood that lot is the production run. When no single lot covers the job, the buyer sees that before checkout and can split the order or request a quote.

On whether Shopify can carry lot-controlled hardwood orders. No commerce platform ships single-lot allocation for flooring as a standard feature. On every platform the lot rule is built against the ERP, so the real questions are where that rule runs and whether ERP data reaches it intact. Uncap Connect is embedded inside Shopify rather than running as separate middleware. It keeps Shopify and the ERP in real-time, two-way sync and also syncs "customer-specific pricing, credit terms, and tax rules." The ERP stays the system of record for lots, grades and prices.

Acclimation and compliance travel with the order. Each product carries the manufacturer's temperature, humidity and acclimation requirements, and imported or engineered lines carry species, country of harvest and TSCA Title VI label status. Those attributes, and an acknowledgment accepted at checkout, are configured during implementation. The order confirmation repeats the text the warranty depends on.

Dealers reorder, contractors quote by job. Uncap Portal gives each dealer a real multi-user company account with roles and permissions. Each buyer sees their own assortment and pricing, with reorder lists and order history a click away, and net terms, invoices and payments in the portal. A contractor's job for an unfinished floor (boards, abrasives, stain and finish) goes through Uncap Quotes, with approval routing for exceptions, a validity window and a full revision history. When it is accepted, the approved quote converts to a Shopify order in one click.

Why Uncap

The line between product and build, written down. Quoting, account pricing, company accounts and one-click order conversion ship in Uncap Quotes and Uncap Portal. Configurator rules, lot logic, coverage rounding and the acclimation acknowledgment are built during implementation. You see which is which in the scope.

Built for the account, not the anonymous shopper. The dealer online and your inside sales rep see the same price for the same bundle, because it comes from the ERP for that account.

Credentials you can check. Uncap is a Shopify Platinum Partner, on Shopify since 2013, with 380+ unified storefronts launched on Shopify.

Scoped before it is built. The Uncap Blueprint maps your line card, grading and coverage rules, lot data, account pricing and ERP integration before any build begins. You keep the architecture, the prototype, the data plan, the risk register and the fixed-cost estimate, whoever builds it.

This page sits under building materials ecommerce, which covers the measure, calculate and order flow, square foot pricing, waste factors and rounding to cartons and bundles for everything sold by area. This page goes one level down into what only hardwood adds: grade, random length coverage, the production lot and acclimation. Both sit within building and construction. 07 Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify handle lot-matched hardwood orders with ERP-controlled inventory, or do we need a heavier platform?

Yes, Shopify can run it, because single-lot allocation is built from your ERP's lot data on whichever platform you choose. No commerce platform ships a lot rule for hardwood flooring out of the box. The ERP tracks stock by lot, and lot-level availability is built during implementation on inventory synced through Uncap Connect, so the storefront only promises what one lot can fill. Connect is embedded inside Shopify, syncs both ways in real time, and carries customer-specific pricing, credit terms and tax rules to each dealer's company account.

How do you sell species, grade, width and finish without thousands of variants?

With a configurator over the items you actually mill or stock. The buyer chooses each attribute, only combinations that exist resolve to a sellable item, and everything else routes to a quote. The combination rules are built during implementation from your line card, and Uncap Quotes applies negotiated account prices per square foot automatically.

What are the hardwood flooring grades?

For unfinished solid oak under the NWFA/NOFMA standard, the grades are Clear, Select, No. 1 Common and No. 2 Common, often sold combined as Select & Better or No. 1 Common & Better. The standard says appearance alone determines the grade and that all grades are equally strong and serviceable. Clear is mostly heartwood with a minimum of character marks. No. 2 Common admits sound natural variations for a character look. Factory finished flooring is graded to each manufacturer's own appearance guidelines.

Why is the coverage on a hardwood bundle not exact?

Because hardwood ships in random lengths, and the NWFA/NOFMA standard judges stated coverage as an average across any one shipment of 1,000 square feet or more. Individual bundles vary. The same standard sets average board length minimums by grade, allows no piece shorter than 9 inches, and sets no board length compliance for widths over 5 inches. The storefront states coverage per bundle and says it is an average.

What acclimation information should travel with a hardwood flooring order?

The flooring manufacturer's own requirements, because the NWFA installation guidelines defer to them. Jobsite temperature and humidity must be within the manufacturer's requirements. For engineered flooring, the guidelines say to follow the manufacturer's moisture testing, acclimation, installation and maintenance instructions to retain all warranty coverage. They also note imported and tropical species often take two to three times longer to equilibrate than most domestic species. Showing that text on the product and the order confirmation is configured during implementation.

How is an unfinished hardwood order different from a prefinished one?

An unfinished order includes the finishing job. The boards are sanded, stained and finished on site, so abrasives, stain and finish belong on the same quote. The NWFA guidelines suggest letting unfinished solid flooring stabilize for 5 to 7 days after installation before sanding and finishing, when scheduling allows, which moves the finish delivery date. Uncap Quotes carries the boards and consumables on one quote with a validity window and full revision history.

Which ERPs does this connect to?

Uncap publishes twelve ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage and SAP. For hardwood, the Epicor LumberTrack page covers sawmills and wood products distributors, and the Epicor BisTrack page covers lumber and building materials dealers. Integrations are delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app or a managed iPaaS integration, and the Uncap team confirms fit and sync depth for your system directly.

What is the difference between this page and the building materials page?

The building materials page covers selling anything by area: measuring, waste factors, rounding to cartons and bundles, job quotes and contractor pricing. This page covers what only hardwood adds: grade as identity, coverage that averages across random lengths, one lot per job, and the manufacturer's acclimation and compliance conditions. Most hardwood distributors need both layers.

How does a hardwood flooring build start?

With a Blueprint, a scoping engagement delivered before any build begins. It maps your line card, grading and coverage rules, lot data, account pricing and ERP integration, and you keep the architecture, prototype, data plan, risk register and fixed-cost estimate.
