Quote validity windows
Package quotes carry a validity window and a full revision history in Uncap Quotes.
- Repricing on expiry and line-level validity built during implementation
- A request to hold a price past the window goes to the right approver
Uncap builds lumber and wood products B2B ecommerce on Shopify for wholesalers, distributors and pro dealers selling to lumber dealers, builders and framing contractors. Lumber is priced like a commodity. A house package quoted today against this week's market may be signed three weeks from now at a different market, so the quote needs an expiry date the storefront enforces. The same stud can sell by the piece, the linear foot, the board foot and the thousand board feet. And grade, species and treatment decide what the item is, not how it is described.
Lumber is quoted against a market with an expiry, sold in four units, and identified by grade stamp and treatment category.
A lumber quote is a position on next week's market. Say a builder sends plans for a 2,400 square foot house. Your estimator takes off the framing package, prices it against this week's sheet, and the builder signs in three weeks. The commodity lines in that package may have moved since. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that "Producer prices for lumber rose 89.7 percent for the year ended April 2021," calling it "the largest 12-month advance since the data were first collected in January 1927." That was an extreme year, but it shows what an open-ended lumber quote can cost.
Not every line on a package rides the same market. Say framing, sheathing and treated stock reprice whenever your yard reprices, while the hangers, nails and house wrap on the same quote sit on a supplier list with its own schedule. Then a quote that expires all at once either holds commodity prices too long or throws away a hardware price that was still good.
The same stud can sell in four units. Piece, linear foot, board foot and per thousand board feet (MBF). NIST's uniform method of sale regulation, in its hardwood lumber section, defines the unit plainly: "A board foot is the volume of a board 1 ft long, 1 ft wide, and 1 in thick or its equivalent (144 in3 of wood)." The softwood lumber standard counts it from nominal sizes, so a 2x6 that is 12 feet long is 12 board feet. Your wholesaler may bill you per MBF. Your builder thinks in pieces and lengths. A storefront that prices one way and invoices another starts an argument at delivery.
Random length means the order and the shipment are different numbers. Say a dealer orders a unit of random length 2x10 against a footage. What ships is a tally: so many pieces at each length. The American Softwood Lumber Standard says invoices for dressed lumber "should show the number of pieces of each nominal size and length." A catalog that assumes a fixed quantity per SKU cannot record that honestly, and the credit memo shows up a week later.
The grade stamp is the item, not the description. Under the American Softwood Lumber Standard, PS 20, a grade mark shows the mill, the agency symbol, the species, whether the lumber was dry or green when manufactured, and the grade. "A grade mark is owned by the grading agency." The seasoning mark reads S-GRN, S-DRY or KD. A No. 2 SPF 2x10 and a No. 2 Southern pine 2x10 are not the same item when the engineer's header schedule names one of them. A title string that buries grade and species hides two of the facts NIST's method of sale regulation puts in a softwood lumber declaration of identity: "the grade or grades, species or species group, and whether the lumber is unseasoned (green) or dry."
Treated lumber is sold by where it goes. The American Wood Protection Association (AWPA) describes its use categories as "a shorthand method of describing the various hazards to which wood products may be exposed." UC3B is "Exterior Above Ground, Uncoated or Poor Water Runoff." UC4A is "Ground Contact, General Use." UC4B is "Ground Contact, Heavy Duty." AWPA states that "Ground contact applications require an AWPA Use Category 4A (UC4A) or higher." It also warns that "some treated lumber that is two inches or less in thickness may only be treated for above-ground uses." A contractor who orders "treated 2x6" for a sill on grade can get stock treated for above-ground use unless someone checks the use category on the end tag.
Uncap Connect keeps Shopify and your ERP in real-time, two-way sync, and the unit conversion, line-level expiry and tally record are built during implementation.
Quotes that expire on purpose. Uncap Quotes runs the configure, price, quote workflow inside the Shopify admin, with negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks applied automatically. Quotes carry validity windows and a full revision history. Pricing and terms pull from the systems you already trust, so the quote starts from your ERP's current sheet. When the window closes, a requote is a new revision in that history. Repricing from the ERP on expiry, a view of which lines moved, and validity by line, so commodity lines expire on your market cycle while hardware holds, are built during implementation. A builder asking you to hold the framing price past the window is an exception, and Uncap Quotes sends exceptions to the right approver. Once the builder signs, the approved quote turns into a Shopify order in one click.
The takeoff becomes the quote. Importing your estimator's material list into quote lines mapped to your SKUs, by unit and length, is built during implementation. The package can carry delivery drops as their own lines, because Uncap Portal lets a Shopify store sell services and rentals alongside standard ecommerce products. Delivery, precutting and staging a drop go on the same order as the studs.
Every unit priced from one basis. Your ERP holds the price per MBF, or per piece where that is how the line sells. Board feet per piece, pieces per unit and dressed sizes live on each item as data, so piece and linear foot prices add up to the same invoice. That conversion layer is built during implementation. The field notes on selling lumber online cover these units and why the storefront has to convert between them.
Repricing that reaches the storefront. Uncap Connect keeps Shopify and your ERP in real-time, two-way sync for inventory, orders, customers and pricing. When your purchasing team reprices commodity lines in the ERP, the price a logged-in builder sees changes with it. Connect also syncs customer-specific pricing, credit terms and tax rules, and it is embedded in Shopify with no separate middleware platform to maintain. The ERP stays the system of record.
Grade, species and treatment as attributes. Grade, species or species group, agency and seasoning (KD, S-DRY or S-GRN) become filterable attributes. Treated items carry their AWPA use category, preservative and retention from the end tag. A buyer who says the material touches the ground is filtered to UC4A or higher. The attribute model and that application filter are configured during implementation.
Random length recorded as a tally. Units sell against a footage, and the order records the tally that actually shipped, piece count by length. That tally record is built during implementation on order data synced through Uncap Connect, and the invoice matches what came off the truck.
On whether Shopify can carry market-priced lumber quoting. Uncap's published products do not include board foot and MBF conversion, line-level quote expiry or a random length tally. On Shopify, those rules are built during implementation against your ERP's data, so the real questions are where the rules run and whether the ERP's account data reaches them intact. Shopify's own help center warns that some App Store integrations are not fully compatible with B2B companies and catalogs. That is a warning about how an integration gets built. On the Epicor BisTrack integration, BisTrack customers become Shopify companies, ship-to locations become company locations, and the people buying under an account become buyer logins with their own permissions.
Proof, labeled at its true distance. Uncap has not yet published a lumber case study. The closest is adjacent: ULE Group "offers a vast catalog of specialized construction products." Uncap built its Shopify B2B storefront with "real-time integration with the Epicor ERP" and "a cart-level convert-to-quote feature for high-value purchases."
Validity windows, revision history, approval routing, account pricing and one-click order conversion ship in Uncap Quotes and Uncap Portal, and the lumber rules are built during implementation.

An estimator's material list mapped into quote lines by SKU, unit and length.
One price basis from the ERP, converted per item from stored board feet per piece, so each unit adds up to the same invoice.
Grade, species, grading agency and seasoning held as filters, not buried in the product title.
UC3B, UC4A and UC4B with preservative and retention, plus an application question that filters ground contact work to UC4A or higher.
Units sold against footage, with the shipped tally recorded on the order, so the invoice matches what came off the truck.

The line between product and build, in writing. Validity windows, revision history, approval routing, account pricing and one-click order conversion ship in Uncap Quotes and Uncap Portal. Repricing on expiry, line-level expiry, takeoff import, unit conversion, grade and treatment attributes and tally records are built during implementation. You see which is which in the scope before the build starts.
Both sides of two-step distribution. Mills and wholesalers selling units to dealers often run a different system from the dealer selling packages to builders. Uncap publishes integration pages for each side, and both are honest about what the vendor documents and what has to be discovered on your instance.
Credentials you can check. Uncap is a Shopify Platinum Partner, on Shopify since 2013, with 380+ unified storefronts launched on Shopify.
Scoped before it is built. The Uncap Blueprint is a fixed-price, four-week plan, credited 1:1 toward implementation. It covers solution architecture, data taxonomy, an ERP integration audit, UX and flow prototyping and total cost of ownership, and ends with a risk register and a fixed-cost implementation estimate. For a lumber business, that architecture work can cover your price basis, quote validity rules, takeoff format and grade and treatment data. You walk with everything you need to brief any agency or your in-house team.
This page sits under construction supply ecommerce, which covers branch stock, will call and jobsite delivery, rental, and fasteners by box, carton and pallet. This page goes one level down, into lumber: quoted against a moving market and sold by grade and treatment. Both sit within building and construction. The building materials page covers square and linear foot pricing and the waste factor. Mills selling hardwood flooring should see hardwood flooring, and yards carrying structural steel should see rebar and structural steel. For the ERP side, dealers should see the Epicor BisTrack integration above, mills and wholesalers the Epicor LumberTrack integration, and everyone else the full list of ERP integrations.
Bring two documents. The first is a house package quote that expired before the builder signed, with the requote that replaced it. The second is one week of your commodity price sheet, by MBF or by piece, as your buyer issues it. Between them they show which lines move, how often, and what the expiry rule has to be.
Book a strategy session with Uncap, or start with a Blueprint if what you need first is the quote validity logic, the unit model and the ERP mapping written down and costed.
Shopify can carry it, with the lumber rules built during implementation from your ERP's data. Uncap's published products do not include MBF conversion or line-level quote expiry. On Shopify, Uncap Quotes runs the quote with validity windows, a full revision history and pricing pulled from your ERP. Unit conversion and line-level expiry are built during implementation. The other risk is an integration that does not map B2B companies and catalogs correctly, which Shopify's help center itself flags. Uncap Connect is embedded in Shopify and syncs customer-specific pricing, credit terms and tax rules, so each dealer's contract price reaches the quote from the ERP.
As long as your yard is willing to hold the commodity lines, which is your call and not a trade constant. A quote in Uncap Quotes carries a validity window. When it closes, a requote is a new revision in the quote's history. Repricing from the ERP's current sheet on expiry, showing the builder which lines moved, and giving commodity lines a shorter window than hardware and fasteners on the same quote are built during implementation.
A board foot is a volume of lumber: a board 1 foot long, 1 foot wide and 1 inch thick, or 144 cubic inches. For softwood it is counted from nominal sizes, so a 2x6 that is 12 feet long is 12 board feet. MBF means a thousand board feet. A price per MBF divided by 1,000 gives the price per board foot, and multiplying by board feet per piece gives a piece price.
Under the American Softwood Lumber Standard, PS 20, a grade mark shows five things: the mill, the grading agency's symbol, the species or species combination, whether the lumber was dry or green when manufactured, and the grade. The seasoning mark is S-GRN for surfaced green, S-DRY for surfaced dry, or KD for kiln dried to a maximum moisture content of 19 percent. Each belongs on the storefront as a filter.
They are AWPA use categories, which AWPA calls a shorthand for the hazards a wood product may be exposed to. UC3B is exterior above ground, uncoated or with poor water runoff. UC4A is ground contact, general use. UC4B is ground contact, heavy duty. AWPA states that ground contact applications require UC4A or higher. AWPA says the end tag should show the use category, the preservative and its retention. Those become storefront attributes and an application filter, configured during implementation.
Yes, when the order model records a tally rather than a fixed quantity per SKU. The dealer orders a unit against a footage, and the order records the pieces that shipped at each length. The American Softwood Lumber Standard says invoices for dressed lumber should show the number of pieces of each nominal size and length. The tally record is built during implementation on order data synced from the ERP.
Uncap publishes twelve ERP family integrations: Acumatica, Cin7, Epicor, Fishbowl, Infor, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite, Odoo, Oracle, QuickBooks, Sage and SAP. For lumber, the Epicor BisTrack page covers lumber and building materials dealers selling to contractors, and the Epicor LumberTrack page covers sawmills, wholesalers and brokers selling to dealers. LumberTrack work starts with discovery on your instance. Integrations are delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app embedded in Shopify, or a managed iPaaS integration.
The construction supply page covers how a contractor buys from a branch: stock before the drive, will call and jobsite delivery, rental alongside purchase, and fasteners by box, carton and pallet. This page covers what that flow does not: lumber quoted against a market with an expiry, sold in four units, and identified by grade stamp and treatment category. Many pro dealers need both.
