Run-length estimator
Linear feet, height, style, color, corners, ends, gates and terrain in, and a complete material list out.
- Built during implementation
- Handed to the Uncap Quotes workflow
Uncap builds fencing and railing ecommerce on Shopify for fence distributors, manufacturers and the dealer and installer networks they sell through. A fence order does not arrive as a cart. It arrives as a measured run: so many linear feet, a height, a style, a color, two corners, an end, a walk gate and a double drive gate. The storefront has to turn that run into line posts, terminal posts, sections or rails and pickets, gate hardware and concrete. It has to price the result at the buyer's contract rate and know when a pool or a raised deck changes what the job legally needs.
A fence order arrives as a measured run, and the storefront has to turn that run into posts, sections, gate hardware and concrete.
A fence order starts as a measurement, not a SKU. An installer walks the property line with a wheel and comes back with 212 linear feet, a 4-foot walk gate and a 12-foot double drive gate. Your ERP needs posts by type and size, panels or rolls, rails, caps, hinges, latches and bags of concrete. Somebody at your counter does that conversion today, by hand or in a spreadsheet they built themselves. When they are out, the conversion is out too.
Every material counts the run differently. Vinyl is sold in sections of a fixed width, so the run divides into bays and the leftover becomes a cut section. Chain link is fabric by the roll, top rail by the stick, and terminal posts that each carry their own tension bands, brace bands and a tension bar. Aluminum panels rack to follow a slope or step down it, and the choice changes the post count. Wood is pickets by the piece and rails by length. Farm fence is wire by the roll with braced corners. A calculator written for one material gets every other one wrong.
The gate is where the callbacks come from. A gate is not a wider panel. It needs heavier posts than the line, a hinge set, a latch, a drop rod on a double drive, sometimes a wheel. Leave any of that off the order and the crew stands at a hole in the fence waiting for a second delivery. A job that cannot close because of a latch costs more goodwill than the latch ever earned.
Code decides part of the bill of materials. A pool changes a fence. The CPSC's Safety Barrier Guidelines for Residential Pools put the top of the barrier at least 48 inches above grade, with no opening that passes a 4-inch sphere. Chain link mesh stays at 1¼ inch or smaller unless slatted. Pedestrian gates open outward, self-close and self-latch. Some localities require 60 inches. Railing has its own numbers. Washington's adoption of the residential code, for one, requires a guard where a walking surface sits more than 30 inches above grade, at not less than 36 inches high. An industrial guardrail under OSHA's walking-working surfaces rule runs 42 inches, plus or minus 3, and must hold 200 pounds at the top edge. Same catalog, different order.
Three channels buy from one catalog at three prices. A manufacturer sells to dealers under a program with its own tiers and minimums. A distributor sells to installers on account at contract pricing, often by the job. A homeowner buys a few sections at retail. Each one needs a different price, a different minimum and a different checkout, and none of them should see the others' numbers.
Long lengths and heavy pallets do not ship like parcels. Top rail, pipe, post pallets and concrete move LTL, on your own truck or by will-call. A storefront that quotes parcel freight on a pallet of vinyl sections has made a promise your dispatcher cannot keep.
The run-length estimator and material takeoff are built during implementation and hand off into the Uncap Quotes workflow.
Linear feet, height, style, color, post type, corners, ends, gates and terrain.
The logic is yours. Uncap encodes it and does not invent spacing tables.
Uncap Quotes applies negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks automatically, with pricing and terms pulled from the ERP.
The fence run becomes a quote. The run-length estimator and material takeoff are built during implementation and hand off into the Uncap Quotes configure, price, quote workflow inside the Shopify admin. The buyer enters linear feet, height, style, color, post type, corners, ends, gates and terrain. Rules written from your own installation guide produce the post count by type, sections or rolls, rails, caps, gate hardware and concrete. Waste allowances, cut sections and picket overage sit inside those same rules. The logic is yours. We encode it; we do not invent spacing tables.
The takeoff lands as a quote the installer can act on. Quotes applies negotiated prices, tiers and volume breaks automatically, and pricing and terms pull from the ERP. The installer gets a branded quote with a validity window. When they add a gate or change the height after the homeowner walks the yard, the full revision history keeps the old material list from being ordered by mistake. A price held for one job rides on that quote and its validity window. A discount outside the rules goes to the right approver. Once approved, the quote converts to a Shopify order in one click.
Pool barriers and railing uses are options that change the list. A pool barrier toggle, a railing use and a stair or level section are configured during implementation from your product data. Flip the pool option and the configurator swaps in compliant mesh or pickets and self-closing, self-latching gate hardware. The storefront does not certify compliance. The local building official does that. What it does is stop a pool job from shipping with the wrong latch.
Each channel sees its own price. Uncap Portal gives dealers and installers real multi-user company accounts with roles and permissions, and each buyer sees their own assortment and pricing. Reorder lists and order history sit a click away, and net terms, invoices and payments live in the portal. Budgets, approvals and limits per user keep a crew lead from ordering past the job. Dealer-program minimums are configured during implementation. The retail homeowner sees none of it.
Pricing and stock come from the ERP, not a spreadsheet. Uncap Connect runs real-time, two-way sync of inventory, orders, customers and pricing between Shopify and the ERP. It "syncs customer-specific pricing, credit terms, and tax rules" the way B2B operations work. It sits inside Shopify with no separate middleware platform to maintain, and every record change lands in an audit trail. Integrations are delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app or a managed iPaaS integration.
Staying on the ERP vendor's storefront is not the only safe route. The usual case for it is integration risk, and that risk is real. It lives in the sync, though, not in the storefront. Contract pricing, stock and terms stay in the ERP as the system of record. The takeoff rules live in the storefront, written down before the build, so you know where every calculation sits and who maintains it.
Gate kits and railing hardware get a picture. Uncap Diagrams puts clickable hotspots mapped to live SKUs on an exploded gate or railing section. Assembly trees drill from the gate to the hinge set to the single hinge, so an installer adds the exact part without a part number. You bring in the schematics you already have and map the callouts. Turning a diagram into a full material list, and suggesting the post caps and concrete that go with it, are built during implementation.
Freight follows the load. LTL thresholds, own-truck zones, will-call and long-length surcharges are configured during implementation. The checkout shows a delivery method the dispatcher will actually honor.

The takeoff is honest implementation work. Nobody ships a fence estimator out of the box that knows your post spacing, your gate hardware and your install rules. We say where the product ends and the build begins, and you see the build in a scope rather than in a surprise.
Credentials you can check. Uncap is a Shopify Platinum Partner, on Shopify since 2013, with 380+ unified storefronts launched on Shopify.
Scoped before it is built. Uncap Blueprint is a fixed-price, four-week plan covering architecture, data taxonomy, SEO and ERP mapping. For a fence and railing build it pins down takeoff rules by material, channel pricing and freight logic before development starts. It is yours to keep, with us or without.
Fencing and railing is a child of building materials sold by the square foot and linear foot. That page covers dimensional pricing and waste factors across roofing, siding, insulation, flooring and the building envelope. This page goes one step further: the order is a takeoff from a measured run, with gates, terminal posts and code-driven options that a coverage rate cannot express. If you also sell fasteners, tools and jobsite gear to the same installers, construction supply covers that buyer. Selling wire and farm fence alongside feed and crop inputs? Start with agriculture and farming. For the railing side of outdoor living, our field notes on selling decking and outdoor products as projects walk through the estimator-to-project-list approach. Fence yards selling into contractor accounts often run Epicor BisTrack, and farm and home stores often run Epicor Eagle. The full list is on ERP integrations.
Bring a real installer's measured layout for one job and the post-spacing and gate tables from your installation guide. Between them they hold the whole build: the run, the rules and the price.
Book a strategy session with Uncap, or start with a Blueprint if what you need first is the takeoff logic and channel pricing written down and costed.
Not by default, because the risk lives in the sync layer and the fence takeoff is the part to scope whichever storefront you choose. Ask any partner where the calculation rules live and whether contract pricing comes live from the ERP by account. Uncap Connect runs inside Shopify with no separate middleware platform to maintain, syncing customer-specific pricing, credit terms and tax rules in real time. Shopify's own help documentation warns B2B data "might not map correctly" when an integration skips the B2B APIs, so ask that too. For your ERP, the Uncap team confirms fit directly.
Yes, and it is built during implementation rather than switched on. The run-length estimator and takeoff hand off into the Uncap Quotes configure, price, quote workflow. The buyer enters linear feet, height, style, color, corners, ends, gates and terrain. Rules taken from your installation guide return posts by type, sections or rolls, rails, caps, gate hardware and concrete. Negotiated account prices apply automatically, and an approved quote converts to a Shopify order in one click.
A fence marks or secures a boundary at grade; a railing is usually a guard at the open edge of a raised surface, and codes treat it that way. Washington's residential code, as one example, requires a guard at least 36 inches high where a walking surface is more than 30 inches above grade. OSHA sets industrial guardrails at 42 inches, plus or minus 3. The storefront should ask which use the buyer has before it builds the list.
A pool usually changes the height, the openings and the gate hardware. CPSC guidelines call for a barrier at least 48 inches high and openings that will not pass a 4-inch sphere. Chain link mesh stays at 1¼ inch unless slatted, and pedestrian gates open outward, self-close and self-latch. Local rules can go higher. A pool option in the configurator swaps those components onto the order, while approval stays with the local building official.
Yes. Uncap Portal gives each buyer their own assortment and pricing on multi-user company accounts. A dealer on a manufacturer program, an installer on contract and a homeowner at retail each see their own price after login, with program minimums configured during implementation. Installers also get reorder lists, order history, net terms, invoices and payments in the portal, without calling the counter.
Uncap publishes integration pages for twelve ERP families, including Epicor, Sage, Microsoft Dynamics, NetSuite and Acumatica. Fence and building products yards often run Epicor BisTrack; farm and home retailers often run Epicor Eagle. Each integration is delivered through an owned Uncap Connect app or a managed iPaaS integration. The Uncap team confirms which route fits your ERP and sync depth.
The unit of the order. Building materials covers products sold by coverage, square foot and linear foot with a waste factor applied, like roofing, siding and flooring. Fencing and railing adds a takeoff: a measured run becomes posts by type, gates, hardware and concrete, and code options like pool barriers change the list itself. Most fence yards sell some of both from one store.
